I absolutely love this scene. Really drives home the point that 90% of the soldiers who fought in WW2 were by no means bad people. They were just doing what they were told and fighting for their countries. Seriously, them exchanging food and medical supplies for their fellow wounded soldiers when they were just trying to kill each other a few minutes earlier almost honestly made me start tearing up...

This is one thing I love about German war films. Nearly every US war film has shown ALL Nazis to be evil, ruthless murderers with no sense of concious or humanity but German war films show that not all Nazi soldiers were evil, they were actual human beings, some of whom were haunted by the acts they had been forced to commit or be murdered by your peers for cowardice.

Plus you gotta give G.G. credit, even though he's still quite green, he's proactive, volunteering to go out with the Lieutenant and Fritz even though he's not got the experience to be undertaking such a task at this stage.

+Stinkmeaner Thanks for regurgitating the narrative that everybody knows. My grandfather fought as a croat in the Wehrmacht, 369th Infantry Regiment, he fought in Stalingrad. Croats are slavs. So were other axis allies, like Bulgaria and Slovakia. Lots of Ukrainians also on the Wehrmacht's side. They even had slavs in the SS. On top of it, many eastern germans are germanized slavs (Sorbs, Ruhrpolen, Kashubians). Millions of Poles enlisted in the "Volksliste" and were granted german citizenship. Angela Merkel's father was polish and a policemen in the third Reich (Jan Kaźmierczak). Doesn't really fit to the anti-slavic narrative. But I wasn't there myself. Now continue your mental gymnastics

1:39 Good attention to details by the director. The Wehrmacht often had to commandeer Russian tanks and PPSH's because top of the line equipment was nearly always diverted to the SS, while being issued a bolt action rifle and maybe one or two MP-40's (Which were not nearly as common as we think) to an assault sqaud. Scavenge was the name of the game throughout the Eastern campaign on both sides.

The unit we see in the film is the Sturmpioniere Bataillon of the Deutsches Africa Korps (DAK), which is stated at the beginning of the film. It is an elite unit full of veterans, which also means that some of the soldiers are older. There are also younger ones, which is related to the fact that the battalion was incorporated into another pioneer unit from the 6th army. Everything makes perfect sense.

why did germans prefer ppshs over mp40s?

More reliable, more rounds per drum and because they were inside enemy territory so they could get more PPSH ammo easily
