This is what I love about German war movies. They make no attempt to glorify war, or to tell stories of extreme patriotism and bravery. They simply present us with a very hard truth. War is not glorious or heroic, it´s just deadly and traumatizing.

I were reading, that at christmas night, some soldiers were staying in bunkers with the light of candles. They were listening to radio from Berlin, where was said, that they are making live connection with Stalingrad, and choir was singing "Stille nacht, heilige nacht". I can imagine how they felt, knowing that their families are tricked.

This was no trickery. They did this over all fronts. From africa to russia, they let radio operators and such sing, and bring a connection to all german armies across the world. Often people forget that the german government wanted the best for the german people.

Germany wanted stolen land to be returned by poland. When they refused we took it by force and our enemies decided to start a new war. The majority of government and the wealthy in germany were jewish. Bankers, lawyers, politicians, etc. Many blamed them for our loss in ww1 and the crippling of a once great empire and theft of its lands. So many wanted just these people removed from power but hitler decided to instead change the narrative to one of racism and genocide. That racist ideology went beyond reclaimation of lost territories and into delusions of grandure of the theft of all nearby non germanic peoples lands and a crusade against communism and all who followed it. A second great war was likely inevitable but this one was caused by the era of extremism and and a select few evil people who were in the right place at the right time.

Ah yes, Hitler loved his nation! Especially in Autumn of 1944 and onwards when he ordered a scorched earth policy to annihilate German infrastructure and food supplies, as well as forcing hundreds of thousands of wounded, sick, elderly and the youth to fight as Volksgrenadiers and Volkssturm units with minimal equipment. Not to mention fighting to the end, which caused several cities to be bombed into rubble, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians.

Although some Nazi atrocities are depicted in the film, why do you think there aren't larger references to them by the main characters?
@MrJP1300
5 жыл бұрын
Because most of the main characters fought on the afrika front before being shipped to Stalingrad, perhaps the stories had not made it to them.
