STAN LEE AND THE BEATLES
Former Marvel Comics editor and writer Tim Quinn tells us that on his first meeting with Stan Lee (the creator of the Marvel Super-Hero line), the conversation swiftly turned to all things Liverpool. Stan was a keen Anglophile, why, he’d even married a Brit! Stan revealed that the Beatles’ LP ‘Rubber Soul’ had quite an impact on one of his key characters in the Marvel Universe. “The song ‘The Word’ definitely influenced the direction I took with the Silver Surfer,” said Stan. “Once (Jack) Kirby had handed in the original illustrations it was obvious that the Surfer was more than just a minor character. He was eclipsing Galactus and the Fantastic Four for goodness sake! The Beatles’ song gave me a clue as to the possible route to take with the character in future stories.”
Tim tells us that “Stan was always a joy to work with. Whenever I’d ask him for a piece of work he would always hand it to me with the stipulation: ‘If it’s no good, let me know and I’ll do it over.’ Needless to say, that never happened. He was fascinated by my tales of growing up in Liverpool during the Mersey Beat era. I would swap those tales for ones of his own on the early days of Marvel. Knowing I was working on creating a line of comic books for a Liverpool children’s charity, Stan asked if he could write a poem for a page in one of the books as a message to the young people of Merseyside. Published by the fabulous charity Liverpool Heartbeat, the poem tells how we can all be super-heroes. It is Stan at his best as a writer and I like to think there is definitely an inspiration of the Beatles in the words. Thanks, Stan. And thanks, Beatles!”
