I don't know why but there's something that just feels right about standalones for a Meshtastic device rather than pairing a phone to a radio.

I know why. Because a phone's battery life SUCKS! 😄

Well, the nice thing is that the phone shows a lot more message history. The map. The settings for the radio device. And that small-screen interface can get awkward on a crowded mesh - which I saw today when Portland OR went up into the triple-digit node counts. Edit: don't get me wrong, I love this project and where it's going, and I'm building stuff to give out to people to play with. A work in progress on many fronts.

@@suzyamerica4679 Sure, it's not perfect (yet) but a standalone device would be awsome. The T-Deck with its huge display has all kind of potential.

@@UnknownUser-pf9rk Agreed 9000%. I've seen vids of what that screen can do. But from my limited understanding (based some comment Crichton made last year on a thread about the Meshenger) the single-board devices are not capable of doing functions such as changing their own settings. When we pair a node with a phone, what we're doing is making a layered device of sorts, essentially with one unit handling the pretty interface (and map, message storage, node table, ability to edit settings, and more) and the other handling the radio and its traffic. Two functionally distinct components. What I think could work for a really cool device would be something like that clamshell micro-py device paired with a LoRa board in the same case and running off the same power supply and connected by simple serial. Py would do a fine job of rendering a large character-display touch screen with a lot of interesting features not yet developed. I have a list of them about a mile long now after seeing what a very crowded mesh can look like.

I would definitely add the names of the devices to the video title or description. I only stumbled across this video by chance. Searching for 'T Deck Meshtastic' did not show this video-a video I had wanted to see sooner.

Could you try comparing them to the Hel-txt? I tested mine to work for 84hrs on the 4000mAh battery and 30Hrs with GPS on. Always wanted to see a comparisson with all three.

Seconding this request. The build cost & time aspects of the Hel-txt model are what make them scalable for me to make and hand out to people to use in the field.

Can these devices setup encrypted channels or are you limited to DM's and general broadcasted messages?

Shame about the interface. I just got a t-deck and was assuming I would have the similar abilities to the phone app. Can I still use the phone app and transmit and send using the t-deck?

oh horay I can send encrypted messages from a stand alone device, but the ui lacks all of the features one would expect, and you can see my exact gps location? that seems like a big fail in security.

I really really wish the t-deck's interface was better. Not necessarily the trackball, but getting to and from channels and DMs etc. It just seems like a mystery. I don't think beginners would be comfortable using it, and the hardware is definitely beginner-aimed.

You are right, there's currently an issue accessing sub-channels due to the lack of a tab key. There is an open bug report for this though as there should be something mapped to act as one.... However, there's also really exciting things coming for the T-Deck in terms of the GUI. Stay tuned! 😉
