Hmmm the problem with Singlish even though we see it as a mix of vocab from different languages, is that we easily basturdize these different languages. eg: Inverted in Malay is Terbalik BUT in singlish alot of people who dont understand Malay, say Tombalek. Plus there is a difference between singlish vocab versus singlish accent. I appreciate singlish vocab (if spoken correctly) exactly because for the same reason discussed but I dont appreciate the singlish accent that can sound monotonous, bored and sluggish in pronunciation, thereby giving others the wrong impression of how you feel (eg: disinterested/rude) or even make it hard for us to be understood. May sound judgy but in the real world, we all get judged within microseconds whether we like it or not.

In the 90s and 100s (2000s) it is very common to have See what see? Stare what stare? You where one? 3 words confrontations. What are you looking at? (5 words) Which gang are you from? (5 words)

Singlish: now what time? what time now? (3 words each) English: what time is it (now)? 4-5 words.

I used to code switch ... Faking an accent I have no business having .. And I gave myself an excuse, to be better understood and also because of the shows I watch (I watch a lot of American) But deep down I know it's because I was insecure about my Singaporean accent (let alone the singlish complete with all the slang words and mix of languages and dialects). Then once on a work trip in San Francisco a person asked me about my American accent , he asked me where I was from and I said Singapore , then he Asked me how come I had an American accent .....I couldn't answer him cuz I knew it was lame , I told him straight, I was shy of my real accent and he said ohhh son , don't be . Took an angmoh to teach me to be proud of my accent . So now I don't code switch ... ANY WHERE , and people actually still understood me , and most people actually find me very interesting and authentic to be around 😉 So please don't code switch it is insincere .

In a formal setting like a sales person speaking to a client , I think standard English is preferable especially when it comes to explaining risks vs rewards in investing . Or a doctor explaining risks and benefits of medication should use standard English to make sure there is no misunderstanding. Between friends… who uses standard English??

Accent and language are entirely different things... Different people from all parts of the world speak English in their own peculiar or even favourite accents, there's nothing inherently wrong or 'being insincere' about that. But the Singlish 'language' is entirely different from English in that it has it's own characteristics and 'grammatical' norms which are readily accepted and understood only among the common people through habitual everyday usage.
