crazy how high Omoe tsunami was, and even as 30 meters is pouring in you still can't see any waves or bulge in the water.

the thing you cant see is it powering along the floor of the seabed. that makes tsunamis so dangerous, they rise as they get near shores. then quickly cause destruction.

In watching tsunami videos, there ones without waves and appear as swells with rising water levels that become destructive only when it is higher than the land surface. The greater the elevation difference the greater the speed, and destructiveness.

supposedly a giant rock of about 90 ft was toppled by the wave
What I don't understand is why some people seem to know it's coming, hence being up on a hill, while others sit in their houses as the waves crashes in. Why do some people know and others not?

Many of them were old, they are slow and take their time to move. In this place, because the port is in a very narrow bay, the tsunami strength was increased dramatically, a bathtub effect. Those who obeyed quickly to the warning survived, those who waited perished. The tsunami arrived more or less 20-30 minutes after the earthquake.

right, imagine all the people living in homes with extended families...you may have small children and elderly and you only have 20-30 minutes to get everyone to react and get out to safety

@@salparadise4804 yeah, and this is supported by a research done a few years later. Out of 13500 casualties in the Tsunami, about 7900 were of 65+ years old people, which shows how stubborn they were about leaving and preferred to trust the seawalls or simply ignored the warnings.

Also you might factor in the traditional Japanese mentality concerning death. Many old people would rather go out in a blaze of glory than slowly wither away, suffering and being a burden on their families. On one of the Minamisanriku video recordings you can hear a woman crying out for her grandpa, who is very shortly under 40 feet of rushing sea-water. He undoubtedly said something like "you take the kids and go up on the hill, I'll be alright", but I think he knew exactly what was going to happen - suicide by tsunami.
