I don't even know how I came up with the term "Stank Trickery" but I started calling it stank trickery when I would manipulate bee colony populations by moving hive boxes or swapping positions. I started experimenting with this six or eight years ago as a way to strengthen weaker colonies without swapping frames around or doing anything else for them. It works pretty good most of the time as long as both colonies being swapped have good queens and an adequate food source. I have caused at least one good nuc hive to fail while trying to prop up a very weak one with this method so follow up inspections are critical if you're going to try this. I've also tried a few variations of this. One is where I would swap positions for half a day or a few hours and then move both boxes to a new yard which would stop the cross populating of those boxes. Stank trickery is nothing anyone really needs to know or will every use on a regular basis but I figured you might like to see some of my fun little experiments.
The hive removal we did in this video went about as expected with the exception that these bees were incredibly laid back. That's not so unusual but the last three colonies we removed from this apartment building were just plain mean. We actually had to suit up for one of them. This particular building had two more hives removed by someone else prior to us being contacted. As you can see the siding is in need of some repair and the bees are taking full advantage. One common thing we found with each hive we removed at this location was that there was quite a bit of expanding foam in each of the areas where there was a hive. Someone had tried to cut corners on repairs by just pumping as much expanding foam into holes and hive entrances as possible. In the end they cost themselves. We got paid for four hive removals and I know of two other removals they paid for someone else to do. They could have added vinyl siding to most of the house for what they've spent in foam and hive removals.
I gave the bees from this removal to a young man (11 years old) who is learning under the guidance of his mom who is, I think, a second year beekeeper.
