There's not a drummer alive that plays a snare, kick and high hat like Steve Gadd. One of many reasons he's influenced drummers for the past 35 years.

Steve Gadd plays drums not just to keep time (which he always does, mind you), but as an equal melodic instrument to guitar and keys. It’s stunning.

39 people apparently lack any musical taste whatsoever. I don't care what type of music you're into, you just can't deny how good this is! Man, Steve to me is just the epitome of tasteful groove. He gots chops, he knows when to use em, and more importantly - when NOT to. And of course, Stanley Clarke. The man has so much style. A true innovator!

i performed w/ stanley clark a couple years ago. he was on upright bass nd was drummin on the bass n everything, it was crazy! he was sittin next 2 me, i was on alto, he looked at my music then turned back the other way. i was like, dont u need the music? he was like no, nd he played all the songs by ear, that was so cool 2 me. they werent even like typical standards...

I am a drummer, and Steve's one of my favorites. What I mean by "small and repetitious" is that he has his Collection of Legendary Gadd Licks which he uses everywhere. But the strange thing is, he sounds fresh every time.

The song is "Silly Putty" from the "Journey to Love" Album by Stanley Clarke. Steve played on the studio track, with Stanley Clarke (bass), George Duke (keyboards), the little known David Sancious (guitar), and a horn section. I saw Stanley Clarke live in 1975 (Journey to Love tour) and 1976 (School Days tour). After an instrumental interlude, he began both shows with Silly Putty. His high school buddy Gerry Brown was the drummer in 1975 and Darryl Brown was the tour drummer in 1976.

There's something hypnotic about his groove, it's so heavy... It's just very rare that someone's groove, even played simply, can be so identifiable. like straight 8's on a hihat 2+4, kick and snare... oh yeah that's steve. To me, ?uestLove has been able to figure that out. If he were around at the same time they'd be playing sessions opposite each other... I dunno,,, thoughts?
