Welch was in Star Ocean 1 and 2 for PSP as well as a hidden recruitable char. Yeah, they are hard on Star Ocean. Since its one of the last JRPGs that have reasonably high production values, they want it to be more of what they want rather than what it was. It's telling that one of the ones complaining about SO5 that I read basically said "the secret is that Star Ocean was never good." Yeah, it wasn't good for your style of play... Another one was talking about how far ahead SO1 and SO2 were for their time, having the crafting systems and such. While everyone else has now adopted what SO1/2 had, SO5 hasn't innovated further but instead stuck to SO2's formula. I imagine you're thankful for them sticking to SO2's formula. :) Once I'm done with SO1 and SO4, I'll probably grab SO5.

Absolutely. This ties back to my "innovation" discussion too. Gamers don't want innovation. Because every time someone does innovate, they complain that it's too different. Like with the FF7 remake (which isn't even out yet). Or FF12's adoption of the gambits. Or Call of Duty going to space. Every innovation I've seen come to this genre seems to get met with, "Why is this game not Chrono Trigger, or Xenogears, or whatever old RPG I'm still in love with that hasn't aged well." The JRPG fan base is one that seems impossible to please holistically...And that's why I think the genre died. Publishers are in a perpetual catch-22. Make it exactly like the old games and get no new fans. Add anything new and you make the old guard angry. That scenario is fine if you are talking about a genre like FPS or Sandbox games because the fan base is big enough for a publisher to alienate a particular part of it. JRPGs...Way to small a group. And yes. I thank God that they brought this back to the SO2 formula. I'm loving that aspect of it.

Nod. Though one point... Chrono Trigger aged quite well indeed, speaking as someone who didn't play it until just a year or two ago and had no nostalgia for it... I'd put it up against many of the best games from the last few years.

Kazriko Redclaw Yeah, that's fair. My bias is showing a bit. I've owned Chrono trigger on about 3 systems and never been able to finish it. For whatever reason, I just get insanely bored trying to play it.

+Alloy Seven that makes sense though. it's story heavy, and very short, with next to no grinding.

That's true. And the combat is painfully slow. Leveling in that game was a chore...And really unnecessary like you said.
