I marched in Star in '90. I have a particular memory burned in my brain from this year. My parents and I traveled to Madison to see finals week, and my memory is from Semi-finals. Star had - I believe - been undefeated all year long and had won quarterfinals. I was down by the front sideline with some other Star Alums as they were announcing results from Semis. I remember after they announced third place, the camera crew positioning themselves in front of Cavies, but there were some staff members nearby who maybe had seen a recap already? I just remember hearing from nearby "You got the wrong corp!!! We got a new leader!" Sure enough, Star was announced as runner-up and they slipped another spot the next night. It was a great show that just peaked too early and they were coasting by finals week.

@@christopherauert6634 the end of the opener in Belshazzers feast (1990) was such a fantastic prelude to the type of run and drum corps energy that not omly catapulted star to thier win in 91 but the whole activity to a new pinnacle in the 90's.

I marched Madison ‘88 and ‘89. In 1990 I remember going to DCI Midwest where the face off of Regiment and Devils (both undefeated) was all the buzz. I couldn’t attend the afternoon prelims (which Devils won). Before the night show, I ran into an old instructor I had from Jr. Scouts. I was trying to get his take on Devils and Regiment and he would have none of it. All he could talk about was Star (he saw you guys in Dekalb the week before). He went on and on and on about how unbelievable you guys were and said no one in Whitewater would beat Star at finals (I think he should have been right about this). I mean he was over the moon about your show. The way he spoke about it with such conviction and excitement. I didn’t know what to think. I did think Star’s staff wrote a show that was beneath their abilities in ‘89, and I witnessed first hand Star doing very well competitively in July and early August (in both ‘88 and ‘89) only to land 7th and 6th at finals. I will tell you my jaw was on the freaking ground when I saw you guys at finals. That old instructor’s excitement paled in comparison to mine. It is STILL one of my absolute favorite shows in DCI History. I watch it often, and I tear up at the end every time watching your staff going berserk on the front sidelines. They must have been so proud of you all. That brass, that drill, that music, that hit at the company front in the finale. Incredible! It was the highlight of the year for me. It was nothing short of incredible! Just wanted to say I am a huge fan, and I became a massive Star homer that night.

I remember seeing this show on finals night in camp Randall stadium in Wisconsin. I was in my early twenties, and as Star came on the field, an elderly couple that was sitting next to me said to me, "This isn't drumcorps", pointing at Star. I thought to myself, "Wow, how sad that they think that way about this drumcorps. Jealousy, maybe? Who knows?" Anyway, I just nodded my head at them and enjoyed the show. But I do really wish drumcorps would get back to the kind of programming we had back then. I'm getting really tired of seeing political messages and "high-minded" concepts in shows. I blame the designers. Just have the kids march and play and entertain while doing so. You see it some nowadays but it's becoming rarer and rarer. I won't ever tell someone "This isn't drumcorps". I will tell them that drumcorps has changed and that I don't care for a lot of the changes that have been made recently, but it is what it is. I'm sure there are a lot of younger people who love the changes. I'm glad just to be able to enjoy it whenever I can.

It would be weird seeing a patriotic show now, for some reason. Bluecoats 2013 was more of an immigrant’s story but didn’t have patriotic music aside from the theme.

You don't think this show is political? It's pretty straightforward Americana, but a show that ends in an American Flag set draped by a Statue of Liberty and fireworks scrim is self-evidentally political.
@KiranSundarkdog97

@@andrewholifield2405 depends on how one views something as "political," and in what context. If this show were performed today, it could probably be seen as political in that it would feel like something straight out of the American nationalistic playbook, or a direct response to growing tensions about America. But the Statue of Liberty and fireworks in the context of the show, performed in 1992? I'm not sure I'd call those political as much as fitting into the Americana vibe of the show (unless one would call that idea political, in which case, the entire show is lol). Just my two cents.

I feel like as we get older, we cling onto traditional notions more and more. As things continue to change, people who aren't easily adaptable to it will be uncomfortable. Star was an artistic juggernaut for its time, particularly in the early 90s, so I'm not surprised that people were put off by Star at the time. And that'll continue to be the case as the activity continues to evolve. There are things I like about today's era, and things I don't like, but at the end of the day, drum corps will be drum corps, and we gotta just hang along and enjoy the ride!

@@cavalier9915 you are definitely entitled to your own opinion as you probably marched Cavaliers. I marched star that year. Cavaliers had a great percussion section no doubt but to say that they were better than Star? In DCI from semi finals to finals is a coin toss when 2 Percussion sections are that close, neck and neck, back and forth 1st and 2nd all season. I'm guessing you were probably unaware that star had the higher field Percussion score in semi finals and tied in drums w Cavs for 1st? I will say that our finals performance was not quite as strong as semi finals and Cavaliers did have a wonderful finals performance but you got to be honest about the hype in going on that judging tape when some errors are being committed during finals. I get it everyone was excited for Cavaliers to finally win one and I'm OK with that, now anyways.

That's what I hate about it. The program choices are so obviously post-Gulf War-reactionary, like the weaponized Army bullshit you see at every sporting event today, designed to get brownie points, and the presentation is so EPCOT that (Chester excepted) the music and staging makes me angry. So extremely well-executed, though. Man, this was a talented corps.
