Piñatas are a way to offer candies/prizes to children and guests during birthday celebrations and posadas. Historically, colorful piñata-like objets were filled with seeds in China to help bring in the New Year. Both the seeds and the ashes of the burnt piñata-like object were spread on the earth for good luck. Marco Polo is said the have brought that tradition to Italy, the word 'pignata' means clay pot. Catholics in Spain adopted the breaking of piñatas during Lent to symbolize the triumph of good over evil. And in Pre-Hispanic Mexico and Central America feather decorated piñata-like objects were filled with offerings in honor of Huitzilopochtli and placed on a pole during the 20 Day Cycle of Panquetzaliztli. The Mayans played a game were blindfolded, they would hit a piñata-like obeject with a stick. Piñatas are colorful and beautiful, and making them offers us an opportunity to destress, be creative and work individually or in teams. Our participants can opt to make a piñata to fill and break or to use as decorations.
