Worf, accompanies the Captain to their house, where Picard intends to try and convince them to leave with them. He's sitting quietly on their couch, drinking the tea they served to him, feeling somewhat uncomfortably compelled to make some kind of polite remark to their hosts, and says... "Good tea. (looks around) Nice house." For some reason, I'm not exactly sure why, THAT line has always been one of my favorites, from the show. The consummate man of few words, but in his character's unique case... less was always more. Peace! 🍻✌

@@HalfShelli Which could make sense for Lwaxana since she wasn't technically Starfleet. She was a Betazoid ambassador to the Federation. I think it's not for her lack of trying to learn Federation Standard/English, she probably just felt that she'd be better understood through the Universal Translator. For instance, I know how to speak Filipino, but not well enough to properly converse with first language Filipinos. And to first language Filipinos, I sound like a North American "trying" to speak with a Manila accent. And Filipinos tend to speak English fluently enough that they can speak English fluently and can understand English way better than I can understand Filipino. I also used to put on a partly Filipino accent when speaking English to elders, but that also eventually faded away. These days, I just default to speaking English. And i am better understood by Filipinos this way as opposed to me trying to speak the mother tongue. Kinda sad for my cultural background and heritage that life turned out that way, but I'm much more Canadian than I am Filipino. In that sense, I'm guessing Deanna learned Federation Standard at an early enough age that she could converse in Federation Standard but with her Betazoid accent, but Lwaxana didn't learn it well enough and felt that Betazoid language translated by technology would better express her thoughts and personality. Of course, this is all initial thoughts reading this mini-thread.

I think one of my favorite scenes with Troi was actually on "Voyager" when Lt. Barclay was working on an issue regarding sending signals to the Delta quadrant, and he surprised Deanna while she was off duty sunbathing on the beach, apparently waiting for Riker to join her. Aside from being an excuse for the writers to put Marina Sirtis in a swimsuit, the scene worked really well because it showed a great deal in a relatively brief scene about the characters of Barclay and Troi, as well as the interesting relationship that the two of them had. I found that Troi's character could actually be quite amusing at times, but most often it was done in subtle ways where she was shown reacting to other people rather than being comedic herself.

Lots of people (understandably) had a crush on Commander Troi, but when the show was on, I was a kid, and she reminded me of my mom. The raven hair in waves and rings; the way she applied her makeup; her robust figure; her dark and thoughtful eyes; a smile like a supernova. So I can’t say I found Troi attractive, in a strange way I found her presence to be very soothing, comfortable and warm. Remember I was a kid, but whenever she was in a scene, I felt...safe. Clearly part of both her history and her personality had a maternal aspect and that’s why I loved this character. Great video! I haven’t thought about this show in a _long_ time. About humor, in general, in Star Trek: From the beginning, ST has had tons of humor sprinkled throughout all of it, from the original series through Enterprise (after that, I lost track). I don't know if people require falling-down, slapstick humor to be called "funny," but my goodness, the interactions of the actors in TOS clearly laid-down the foundation for humor in the series. It's often subtle, and I believe, that's the whole point. When you and I are talking in the future, we're not constantly trying to make jokes, we're talking, and using humor wherever necessary to de-fuse a situation.

I agree entirely. Personally, my favorite humorous episode from the franchise, was an episode of "S.T. Enterprise" called... "Carbon Creek". Where T'Pal was relating a story to Archer, and Trip, about her great grandmother (?) being one of three survivors of a survey crew. Whose small ship crashed on Earth, back in the 1950s, in the forest, near the town of Carbon Creek, in western Pennsylvania. She details the events of their time spent there, posing as human beings. Trying to learn, fit in, work, and make a living, in order to get by. Suspecting that they may never be rescued. The third crew member, ultimately choosing to remain on Earth permanently, when they learn that a rescue vessel will be arriving. Staying, to learn all he can about humanity, of which he has become greatly enamored. T'Pal's great grandmother then eventually, and intentionally, "lies" to their Vulcan rescuers, on his behalf. Telling them that he died in the crash, along with their Captain. So that he will not be searched for. That one will always be one of my favorites. I loved the humor that was laced throughout it! It was so well written!

The first season of TNG was painful at times, with Troi basically being the "emotional tricorder" and Geordi being a human version of the instrument ("LaForge, take a look at this, and tell me what you see"), both of their roles being almost strictly to provide info dumps into the plot. I have met her several times at conventions and for some reason it has resulted in what I consider hilarious moments that are nearly unbelievable. The first time was in Burbank CA. And she comes out, starts off her set with "I have the eyes of an eagle, so don't video record it", followed by her saying she has been doing these conventions for 12 years and by now everyone has had to attend one of them, then asks is there anyone here who hasn't seen me yet?" I raise my hand from the back of the room and she is genuinely surprised but still had a snarky comeback which was "Well, where have you been these last 12 years, in a cave? To which I reply No ma'am I was in the army! I still am. After her set as we all lined up in her autograph line, when it was my turn, she pulled me aside and out of the line and had me stand next to her table. And we hsdca rather personal conversation for about 15 min as others came through, she would glance at them and conduct pleasantries and sign their autographs. While still talking to me. She was interested about my time in the army and she related part of her father's military service. So I more or less had a not exclusive one on one experience with her for about 15 minutes. I was and still am deeply honored to have been blessed by her attention and interest. This is a cherished memory. I do not recall at this time if there are pictures. To prove that I was indeed there. Some of the other times I do have pictures of. As well as the last time I saw her, which was at the Las Vegas Convention Center. I was cosplaying as Data, and getting ready for the first day of the convention. I noticed I was out of eyeliner I needed to complete my makeup, so off I go to the hotel beauty salon. I walk in just as she is walking out of the private area where they had just done her hair and make up. I said hello and did my very best to go away and giver her some space as she needed to give the cashier her room number to charge the services to. I'm not one of "those" kinds of fans that'd do anything and even stalk her when they find out something like her room number. It had been quite a few years (like at least 10+ years from the first time we met and probably 3 to 5 since the last time we met before this day. But I was excited and jazzed, and the very first person I ran into was another Data (personally I think he was Lore). I related this to him and we talked and took selfies. When she was on stage there was a fan contest that she was judging for some videos made by the contestants. She announced the winner, and it happened to be the other Data, (like I said he was really Lore). He stood up from the crowd, she looked at him and said oh I met you in the beauty shop this morning. I must say I prefer my men without eyeliner. He was looking rather confused and I was on the other side of the Auditorium when I set up and yelled out no that was me and she turned to look at me and had it confused look on her face. Then I pointed him and said he's Lore! I'm Data! And everybody laughed. And I do have pictures of myself and Lore. This really isn't about me it is about her and her personality and how she is such a wonderful and open person to the fans. I'm pretty much going to stop here and Save the story of when her and Michael Dorn were on stage together and I accidentally got her drunk and he threatened to kick my ass if he ever found out who I was. A lot of people seem to think Troi was useless, and I'm ashamed to admit I used to, too. But then I started rewatching TNG with my girlfriend, and one of the things that jumped out at me is how often she's giving actually useful counsel, particularly to Picard. I think the main reason for this perception is because she's at her most effective in early TNG, and a bit less later on (though still not nearly as useless as community perception would have us believe). Essentially, she has the unfortunate issue of being at her best during the time when the show as a whole was at its worst, though I wouldn't say it was bad because of her.

When Marina called on me, she immediately asked "Who are you supposed to be?" I replied "a Ship's Counselor" because I was wearing the blue science uniform, and I explained that I am a psychotherapist (i.e., mental health counselor) in real life. I had the gut feeling she was expecting me to say "I'm Commander Riker" but then she would point out my smaller height and blue uniform; as it was she seemed surprised, but didn't say anything else about it. My question for her was regarding her purple outfit: Was this a Starfleet uniform, or Counselor Troi's personal clothing. She said it was a uniform, but as I recall, a visiting Captain Jellico told her to get out of those clothes and get back into uniform! No, Troi would not have ended up dying a needless death the way Yar did. Denise Crosby wanted to leave the show, that's the whole reason Yar was killed. The better question is, if "Counselor Yar" was killed off per Crosby's wishes, would they have replaced a "Counselor Yar" with a new actor? Would they have somehow moved "Lt. Troi" to the Counselor position (awkward)? Promoted Worf to Counselor? The world will never know.

yeah. You'd think they'd write the character off as a transfer or something like they did with Crusher, but no, they brutally killed her... but then brought her back via a temporal anomaly. As they say on Lower Decks.. don't ask the person how they came back to life. It's traumatic for them :P

@@bobnope457 One thing that always bothered me about the two-parter "Reunification" was the scene where Data's acting first officer says he can't serve him, and Data says his record indicates he's totally qualified, and the guy is like, "No, what I mean is, I can't be a good XO for *YOU SPECIFICALLY*!" and Data is like, "Why?" and the dude goes on, "Well think about it, no one would ask a ferengi to build a ship or a klingon to be a counselor. I don't think they should ask a robot to be a captain". Thing is... there have GOT to be klingon counselors! Doctors too, and comedians, and plumbers. That XO dude was a total asshole. If anything I hope Lower Decks brings him back and we find out he's grown and matured after several years of intense therapy with a... KLINGON COUNSELOR.

The bit about the chocolate reminds me of the fact that Mel Blanc hated carrots, but nothing else sounded right when chewed. So, when voicing Bugs Bunny, he would spit the carrot into a bucket after recording scenes that involved Bugs chewing carrots.

Her telling the story about her burnt bottom when taking the helm is quite hilarious, not so much for the rest of the cast & crew cos of the ruined take cos of the burning piece of cork (which they used for the debris) and the fact they had to clean up and reset the bridge to do all they explodey scenes & wreck the bridge set all over again, and by the end of it all, they were utterly knackered and tired, which is why Riker looked so ragged when watching the planet's surface getting nearer on the viewscreen, it's cos Frakes needed his bed, badly, but at least the second time round, she swept the seat off before plonking her rear down on it, just in case... :P

Troi works best as a character if you adopt the head-canon that she isn't telepathic, but just has to fake it. Makes Troi's dialogue far more entertaining (person openly threatens to kill the captain with a spoon, "I sense he's angry Captain").

Marina Sirtis also starred in Stargate SG1. She played a Russian "equivalent" of the SG1 team. Also, she has been portrayed in the book (non-canon) "Dark Mirror" where instead of a ship's counselor, she is basically an officer that insures the loyalty of the crew to the Captain (Picard) and to the Terran Empire. Her power is absolute, she enjoys throwing subjects into the "Agony Booth", and above all, her powers are terrifying, as she is the most feared person on the ISS Enterprise (Imperial Star Ship). And that is where I could have seen an episode of STTNG or another spinoff where Deanna, like Beverly Picard (Crusher) commanded a starship. Captain Beverly Picard played the captain of a medical ship the "Nightingale" I believe it was. Perhaps for Deanna, a "diplomatic" ship of perhaps the Constitution Class, modernized of course for the late 24th, early 25th Century. And called in honor of the first Betazoid FTL ship, the "Aventador". I think given the chance at the time, Deanna would have made a fine ship's captain.

The idea that TNG started with this huge bridge crew was a mistake. TOS worked because you had Spock as the 1st officer and to add unique insight into things. That may have been what they intended with Troi, but TNG had the 1st officer right with Data now being the science officer. There really wasn't much for Troi to do if she couldn't get a reading. Now, had Data been the 1st officer, that could have been something different, the android without emotion and the counselor who feels emotions to be the angels on Picard's shoulders.
@Donleecartoons

I think a lot of TNG's early problems are ones it shares with many, many other reboots and spinoffs of well-loved originals: It tried to create, from the start and from whole cloth, what the original had evolved into (or what the fans made it). That is a guarantee for a rocky start. TNG improved as the parts started moving around and the people running things found out what fit together -- and it became its "own self."

I remember watching an episode, "The Six Napoleons", and being pleasantly surprised to see Marina Sirtis appear. The ship counselor being #3 in command is kind of interesting. The fact that she’s a telepath/empath is valuable but you wouldn’t expect her to be on the bridge. Why wouldn’t she have a similar role as Dr Crusher? Shouldn’t she have appts during the day?
