In a world with universal translators and dozens of planets with hundreds of unique languages and dialects it’s almost not worth it. Knowing 5 or 6 languages is impressive in the real world but in the future 5 or 6 languages is a drop in the ocean. It makes sense that the crew who grew up in the federation doesn’t know all the various languages by heart. Saru however went from a tribal culture to there are aliens out there!!?!? So his interest in other cultures and languages would make sense from his non universal translator society

The idea of the scene is good, but the example you give is bad. It is invariable that in case of malfunction of universal translators, it will sound like in this scene. The Purists, of which I am a part, rather criticize the stupidity of the scientific theories, based on the wind that Discovery has laid for us since season 1. This is not a good scene that will forgive all the Hard Science, which was part of the Star Trek identity, that they put in the trash. I want as proof their stupidity concerning the last episode (13), or L'imperatrice Georgou proposes to create a super-nova by accelerating its process. This was the advantage of the old series: there were advisers on scientific subjects, even if that did not prevent some idiocy, there were few scientific errors in Star Trek.

The multiple languages was enjoyable to watch haha. But that aside, when Michael said 6.39 by 10 to the 20th power kg, I knew that there was not a proper physicist advisor on the show. Seriously, just quote that in Earth masses and it would be fine. Given Starfleet is an exploration vessel they would use units that we astronomers use. For a mass of this magnitude quoting it in kg is a little awkward, she should've said 1/1000 Earth Masses (but more massive than your average asteroid). Sorry to nitpick, but I'm an astronomer. I enjoy the show but this part just got me a little tickled. It would be like quoting distances in a solar system in km rather than in AU (they do quote galactic distances correctly in light years, which is sensible).
@lugenccesaire1905
2 жыл бұрын
I always thought it was bc humans aren’t the only species in the galaxy so using the earth as a pinpoint just confuses things
@lenanana8
2 жыл бұрын
@@lugenccesaire1905 That's a valid point. But this is Starfleet (a scientific organization founded on Earth) which would've (and should've had) a standard system of galactic units that all members of Starfleet, regardless of species, would've known. And this should be based on galactic standards, so for coordinates (and distances) it would be the center of the Milky Way (and in astronomy that's the galactic coordinates). It's true that Earth is an arbitrary reference point when it's not the only inhabited planet, so then all Earth units, including the SI/metric system, would've been arbitrary. In that sense, why use kg or meters or any other metric unit (or non-metric like pounds, miles, oz, etc) at all when it's Earth-relative? The reason why I point out the astronomical inaccuracy in using kg here as opposed to Earth masses is that galactic objects like planets and stars have very big masses, distances, etc that have to be quoted as "10 to the power of ...". Using an earth mass for planets or a solar mass for a star makes it easier to not say "10 to the power of ..." everytime. Likewise with distances we use, depending on how far things are, astronomical units (within a solar system), light years, parsecs, kiloparsecs (within a galaxy) and megaparsecs. All these are non-SI units (not meters) that can be converted to SI units but are just super huge. Space is huge, and people often underestimate just how big space is. SI units, which are really awesome, just become irrelevant when you're talking about the universe because space is too big. If they had had an astronomer consulting for the show, this mistake wouldn't been made. Hope that clears up why I've pointed this out?

I took that more as "he was smart enough to figure out that blabbering wasn't going to get him anywhere" BOOM is pretty universal

I think it is a missed opportunity to show the multi-culturalism of the crew that they were not all speaking their native languages and the translator had just shut down instead of going haywire and translating their speech into multiple (changing) languages. This would also show up the complacent laziness of the crew in not bothering to learn other languages (much like, to be fair, most English users today, myself included!) but in this case because of the ubiquity of universal translators.

The captain speaks French at 0:52 but that's not french at 1:07 (and I don't know if it's him doing the talking, but it's not french at 1:22 either).

Love that they forgot about the alien Hyporgot who is in pain and the only one that remembers is his sister figure. This was Saru's shining moment where he could show, brag, burn his crew-mates about him being n over achiever being a good thing and get away with it all while 'dying'.

See movies? This is how you show how a system works, instead of babbling for 10 minutes on a couch how the system works.
