I guess Worf forgot about his foster parents and brother, and son Alexander. Worf is the biggest deadbeat dad in Star Trek (at this point) since Kirk.

What I like about Rom's character development is that ultimately it all stems from Nog. It's Nog joining starfleet and breaking with Ferengi traditions that makes him see he can stand up for himself and choose his own destiny too.
@little_forest

I do not completely agree. If Rom wasn't the father he is, Nog would have never joined Starfleet. So it seems to me like a combined development they both go through in parallel and together. But that are almost the most emotional things in DS9, the developments of Rom and Nog, like when Nog screams as Sisco "I don't wanna end up like my father!" or in Bar association when Rom speaks so passionate about forming the union. I mean, most of the other main characters are already great Starlet people and so on, but Rom and Nog were looked down upon in the beginning and look at them at this stage of the series!

Yeah and what's really at the root here imho is DS9 Worf is 99% wangst. TNG Worf had his wangsty moments, but balanced out by fun moments and such. And he should be more mature now. I could sort of see it if he blamed himself for the loss of the D (which he should, and starfleet should) but that's never addressed in those terms (to my recollection).

I like how Worf "doesn't fit in" in certain ways with DS9 life. They really take some time to develop his story beyond TNG's pre-established narratives. It is fortunate that Dax has an affinity for Klingon culture, and opera, to help Worf find his place among the crew. (BTW, the stolen tooth sharpener may very well have been the tooth sharpener that Worf bought from Nog when Nog was selling his stuff in order to fund his future at Starfleet.)

Worf moving his quarters to the Defiant seems problematic. What if the Defiant is sent on an extended mission? It's a warship, not an apartment building. There go his quarters. This means that wherever the Defiant goes, Worf goes. This explains why he's commanding the Defiant in "First Contact" He's defending his tooth-sharpener.

It's just crazy to me that forgetting your entire family and past is somehow more honorable than...anything else. The episode started as an exploration of Klingon honorboundness but for some reason swerved into "and then Dax and Bashir did Science to fix everything!" If we're being really charitable we could say there's a point here about how codes of behavior that aren't updated based on evolving culture and technology tend to develop weird loopholes or hangups that really make no sense on principle...

These episodes being back to back are a great example of DS9s amazing balancing act. A serious, controversial episode followed by a Ferengi episode you’d expect to be a little silly but ends up being powerful and both have great character development. I’m glad you’re loving your watch through!

Bar Association is a great episode! Rom gets even more character development! He's got a spine and a heart of gold. And now he's an engineer! We see Jeffrey Combs return as Brunt FCA! Combs plays many characters on Trek- including a super important one that you haven't even met yet! He was also the alien guy that wanted Quark to take holo pics of Kira a while back. He's even on Voyager and Enterprise as different characters. Leta the Dabo Babe returns! She's a fun character and is really supportive of Rom too! Best of all Sisko gets to yell at people! In Sons Of Mogh, he chews out Worf and here he gets to yell at Worf, O'Brien and Bashir! He even gets to intimidate Quark. I love when he yells, but it's when he quiet that he reeeeally means it. Sisko is simply the best Captain in Starfleet.😎

CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION ERRORS: SONS OF MOGH (IMDb Rating: 7.4) 1:44 Just before Worf breaks Dax's bat'leth, his mek'leth suddenly changes position between camera angles. 8:51 The top of Kurn's nose-piece seems to have come loose while he is berating Worf for not trying to kill him again. 13:06 Klingons seem to only take care of their lower teeth. BAR ASSOCIATION (IMDb Rating: 7.5) There are no entries for continuity & production problems in the Nitpicker's Guide for DS-9 Trekkers for this episode, but there is one under "Equipment Oddities": 33:38 Quark should not be able to create holograms in his bar unless he installed holographic projectors in it. Rom could probably do that, but Quark can't. If this was a practical solution to get free labor, Quark would have done it a long time ago.

'Bar Association' is actually a pun title. A bar association is typically referring to a professional body of lawyers, but the episode is of course about a literal bar. It also ties in with talking about legal contracts, worker rights etc. It's obviously full of spoilers, but the 'Sisko Yelling At Everyone' supercut is one of my favourite KZitem videos.

In TNG's Ethics, Worf breaks his back - and requests Riker kill him for an honourable death - and said usually it is the brother of the dishonoured who should do it. 05:13 I dunno why she's sleeping there, because Runabouts have a very large crew quarters with 4 bunks in the back, unless they're doing something missing specific with that area. In the episode where O'Brien is captured by Cardassians, Keiko asks him if the chairs recline and he said yes and wondered how far. Well, now we know - they can turn into beds as well. 07:20: I suppose attempted murder doesn't exist in the 24th century? 08:04 Sisko can indeed be very scary. I think out of all the captains, he's the one I'd like least furious with me. Picard would dismiss you. Janeway would chew you out. Sisko hasn't YET thrown someone through an airlock but you can never be 100% sure he won't. 10:25 I thought you thought things that were comfortable were weak and unKlingon, now you're moaning that your uniform is "uncomfortable". 10:46 Signs of a cloaked fleet: Tacheyons suddenly appearing. Subspace waves and distortions. Tense music. 39:35 "What's going on in the background" - Nausiccans aren't the most intelligent but they love fighting and violence. In case, it appears they've found the dart board set but without knowing the rules, they're just throwing the darts at each other ... with nausicans it's entirely possible they're a couple and this is foreplay for them. 42:00 lol you've not noticed he's in a Bajoran Uniform :D

Sons of Mogh MAY be one of my least favorite episodes in ALL of Trek. What a character assassination to EVERRYONE involved in the whole thing. To do what was done, all Klingons involved have no honor. Julian should turn in his license to practice medicine. Everyone who has watched Star Trek for ANY length of time knows and has seen that if you have a problem with the Klingon High Council or the Chancellor or discommendation... Wait 5 minutes! New people are going to be in charge soon and you'll get it fixed. The whole concept of the episode was pure stupidity and we lost a great character because of it.

Worf is such a great character! In TNG, he was just the muscle bound punching bag to emphasis the threat posed by the alien of the week. As TNG progressed he was developed, along with Klingon culture, and became more nuanced. By the time he’s on DS9, and we see more of the Klingons, it becomes clear that they are not nearly as honourable nor as spiritual as he is. He’s like the son of a US soldier brought up on a foreign base. He has an idealised view of the USA which is very divorced from reality.

Kurn was only in 3 TNG episodes, so in fact you’ve seen all his appearances. I have mixed thoughts on the ending of this episode. Worf was disgraced before and then (temporarily) Gowron’s ally, so it’s not impossible that he could get back in the Empire’s good graces again in the future. But it seems like Kurn wanted death so much at this point that he may not have been able to wait that redemption out, if it would ever come at all.

OMG, Sons of Mogh was a blunder and by Mr Moore, Klingon Writer(tm) himself. Erasing his memory (did he even consent?) is an honorable thing for Klingons? And surely both Worf and Kurn are extremely well known in the empire. Ollie... can you point me to some episodes you *didn't* think were great?

I guess it can be argued that for Kurn to give consent would have been dishonourable, so best do it without his knowledge. Kurn was also altered genetically and aesthetically, because he is known. I guess the records could be changed to show he died from his wounds when he was shot or something.

Another oddity is that alliances in the Klingon empire are hardly durable. Seems like Worf should have pointed that out. Worf had gone through discommendation already.
