As bad as the Genesis torpedos would be, we should consider that it has been established that a handful of photon torpedos would devastate an entire unshielded planet''s surface. (And the shields would have to be at a higher tech level for the defense to really matter.) This perhaps is what Spock was referring to. I don't deny McCoy's point, though. The Klingons were understandably "concerned" about the Federation gaining this kind of technology. On a related note, one (non-fan) roomie asked me why a ship of exploration and peaceful contact would be armed to the teeth, as the expression goes. Any "new civilization" would be immediately suspicious if they had the ability to scan the Enterprise, or any such ship.

the chemistry between these three is untouched by anything made by hollywood and the streaming giants today. I had the priviledge to see this in theaters a week ago, and I had to come to youtube to try to see Kelley's viscerally real performance again. Kirk was often the onscreen emotional personality that was required to make the full effect of Spock's character shine, but even Kirk had a profound logic to himself, and that role is presented here with Kirk as the man on whose shoulders the angels of logos and pathos were rested in their debate. When McCoy, Spock's perfect antithesis, was there as well it was always a treat to see the best of stoic Vulcanism and the best of passionate humanity debate it out, with the Captain silent in the background as he considers the points of both.

Yeah, I feel like looking this up every time I see the movie. I totally forgot about it until some 20 or so years ago when I was checking some old VHS tapes. I had two of Wrath of Khan, and this was not in the theatrical HBO showing or similar, but it was on a network TV edit. Yeah, it slows down the scene, but I appreciated the implication. Very telling. I think they should have left it anyway. I suppose it's in that extended edition, but I've not seen that, and they often leave too much in those or DC's. TBH, I think the theatrical version is the true DC and edition of a movie anyway. Someone once said that to me, long time ago, and honestly, it's completely true.

McCoy's line: "The 'wrong' hands? Would you mind telling me whose are the 'right' hands?" Is incredibly astute and actually floored Spock I think. One of the few times McCoy out-grasped not just the emotional, but the logical implications of having something like this 'out there' in the Universe full of very fallible, if well-meaning, people. Spock won a lot of arguments vs McCoy in his time, but was bested handily in this one I think. Although, to be fair, in typical McCoy fashion he didn't really give Spock a chance at a rebuttal, that confounded emotionalism of his... Of course there is the irony that while McCoy was proven 100% right in the dangers of Genesis, it turns out it was Genesis that helped save Spock's life. Some good wheels-within-wheels there. Back when Star Trek was in the hands of people who cared, about the property and about good writing.

Can you imagine if these devices were captured by the more belligerent species we've encountered? Like say, The Borg. They most assuredly would develop it into a mass assimilation device. Fire it at a planet and boom, instant borg. Though granted, these devices would also have made mince meat OF the Borg, you fire these into a few cubes or Unimatrixes.

David Marcus said it failed because he "used prto-matter in the mix" (i.e. technobabbble). He and his mom couldn't figure out how to make it work quite right and it's implied that after the Mutara Nebula incident the Federation probably cut funding for the project. But while it may not work to create sustainable planets, it certainly still works as a planet-destroying weapon. Just one of those torpedo-sized devices wipes out a whole world in one shot. If I were the Klingons I'd be scared of the damn thing, too. Same goes for Romulans, Gorn, or any Federation world that wants to secede. Not to mention what a terrorist could do with one.
