Insurrection had some lofty expectations to fill since Generations, and First Contact were such huge hits. First Contact was the franchise's most successful film since The Voyage Home, and Insurrection unfortunately underperformed at the box office, and wasn't the critical success that First Contact was either. The main theme which there isn't much use of is the Ba'Ku Village, it's nice theme and very lighthearted, and suites the film perfectly. It's rarely heard unfortunately, and it makes brief appearances in Regeneration, and The Healing Process, and obviously the end credits which it is spliced with the main Star Trek theme.
The action music is where this score takes center stage. It's some of the best action music he's written since Total Recall, and recalls (hard to avoid the pun) Rambo III quite heavily. The romantic elements in this score are very strong too, and balance out the action sequences very well. However with that said there is one weakness and that's the main theme is rarely used. First Contact's main theme was used often and to great effect however a theme is sorely lacking in this score. I still consider this film score however to be better than First Contact, and miles above Nemesis.
