I liked it too. It immediately brings me back to TNG days, even more than the TNG movies did. I'm super duper tired of the endless doom and gloom, edgelord crap. Hopeful optimism is back and I can't get enough. It's campy like TOS but with a good mix of TNG vibes. We need this, especially this year. As great as DS9 was, the precedent of the Dominion War bringing in the dark depression is the reason we sacrifice fun and intrigue now. Everything has to be near hopeless and I'm over it. 🖖

DS9 was great because it was the first Trek to do that. It was OK to be different. And despite the war hanging over the crew's heads, there still was time to learn to enjoy the little things and have a laugh now and then. Now being "different" is telling the same doom-filled, depression pill that every other show has to cram down your throat. There's very little Trek about modern Trek. Attack anything white and male and kill the past because you hate your parents. That's today's generation, and it's reflected in the media produced for this crowd that actually likes it. I do enjoy Lower Decks getting away from that to tell a parody of TNG.

Major Van Bloodnok To each their own. I’ve seen all the episodes for THE ORVILLE’s first two seasons and will probably watch the third when it drops on Hulu because the retro 90s scifi aesthetic is a guilty pleasure (pretty sure that’s the main reason why people like it, TBH). But for me the only story they’ve done that actually stands to the quality of TNG (particularly Michael Pillar’s run in Seasons 3-5 which was the show’s peak) was “Identity: Parts I & II” and the biggest reason was because they mostly drop the humor in that one and focus first and foremost on the characters and their development especially in such a perilous situation. It was the moment THE ORVILLE finally made a choice on whether it wanted to be homage or parody, of which indecision on the matter has always been its problem. Not that I think humor in my scifi/fantasy is bad. If anything, Joss Whedon was the one that showed how you can have humor seamlessly woven into drama without having tone problems. In shows like BUFFY and FIREFLY, quippy dialogue and amusing situations feel very natural in part because they don’t come off as distracting or forced but rather quite natural for the characters in their world. And it’s not like he’s the only one that can do it as his style of writing has been imitated a lot since then - even in the recent live-action Treks for better or worse. And when the imitations aren’t great, there’s still that core understanding present to make the humor come off natural for the characters. The problem with The Orville isn’t that there is humor but that the humor is BAD. Every time someone says a line or does something that’s supposed to be funny, it’s not because it feels forced and out of place. It’s like they come up with the stories and then the scripts only to sprinkle dumb jokes afterwords because they forgot they were writing a “comedy” and not just “Star Trek”. The humor of the show feels more like a consistent afterthought rather than being properly integrated into the narrative. So I reject the BACK TO THE FUTURE comparison because at least that movie knows it’s a comedy and is legit funny from the getgo - whereas THE ORVILLE comes off perpetually confused about what it wants to be. I mean if you find it funny, you do you. But when it comes to rewatch-ability, there’s only two episodes of THE ORVILLE I’d rather watch again and it’s the ones that don’t really resemble the show as a whole. I’ll take the entirety of THE EXPANSE (and other good thinking man’s scifi) over that.

Thanks for the great review won’t see it for a while in Australia but still like to see what other people think . It has been mentioned the ship is supposed to be a homage to the Reliant from Wrath of Khan.

I love dang near everything about Lower Decks. It's such a nice break from all the WARRRRRRRRR! of modern Trek (which I also love) My only complaint is that, being animated, they can get away with a lot more than live action, especially violence. I don't want my kids to see people dismembered. Other than that, it's a great show to enjoy with my 7 and 5 year olds

I was so disappointed with Disco and a little heartbroken with Picard, that I already wrote this one off without even looking for any positives. Thank you for reminding me to not fall into that trap. I mean, how many Borg cautionary tales have I watched and still don't understand that hive-minds are bad. In any form.

I feel like a redesign of them being like The Cybernetic Walking Dead.....that truly would be terrifying....just half corpes, mutilated and reanimated with Borg tech. Thays how tou make the Borg terrifying to a modern audience. Greusome, grotesque and alien all one. Imagine the borg cutting people apart and essentially making cybernetic zombies while rewatching borg episodes. It really adds to the sense of fear and dread that was trying to be conveyed on public TV, and makes the Borg truly the scariest enemy of the Federation.

@@lieutenant_dan27lt.d45 That would be cool. Mushbrains piloting Borg Cubes would be fun to see. My point is there's little point to introduce a zombie virus, when that's what the Borg represent.

true Borg are the classic George A. Romero slow moving unyielding threat...the ones in this episode were more like 28 days later fast paced rage infected kind of zombies

@@amazedsatsuma That's true. I'll try this one more time, after this, I give up. The Borg (aka zombies) already exist within Star Trek. That's how Star Trek could add an element of horror, and have a reliable antagonist make repeated appearances. To add a zombie virus into the ST mythos when they added zombies in TNG, is just lazy storytelling.

@@tomgl6684 I tried STD a few times but kept giving up and turning it off. I thought it was just dark and boring and I didn't like any of the characters and didn't care about what was happening to them. I mostly enjoyed Picard although much of that was probably out of the nostalgia of seeing the original characters again - I wish Picard had been done better but I thought it was ok.

3 years later, and I can say I have watched the entire series of Lower Decks, and I love this show! Anyone who thinks the show is "Woke" or whatever is just wrong. I'll say that in the first episode, the Mariner character had some questionable dialog. Specifically when she said with confidence "I'm never wrong." I didn't know if this was a character flaw or something the show was taking seriously. But just a few episodes after this, you realize this is a character flaw. Becket Mariner has a real arch that is fun to watch.

I learned recently not to listen to the angry hateful people specifically when it comes to subjective things like TV shows and movies. I saw a handful of people saying very angry things about new star trek but never pointed to anything specific then I learned the same things were said about TNG. Now I just watch whatever comes out and I make my own decisions. So far I really like Lower Decks and I warmed up to Discovery but felt pretty 'meh' on Picard. Honestly 'meh' is as negatively as you need to feel about something like Star Trek.

It felt like solid Trek I’m looking forward to seeing more. My only problem was it took like 2 minutes between discovering the slime was a cure and the crew being saved. If the episode was 5 minutes longer they could’ve stretched out making the cure gas and figuring out how to give it to the crew instead of “punch it into the computer, done”.
