I agree, and I don’t think it’s sexist as it’s more a comment on one unhinged woman ( note thar she is the only one who claims that women aren’t allowed to be captains. Kirk merely humours her by agreeing as she is pretending to be on her death bed ) rather than the whole female race. It’s a really suspenseful episode and Shatner could have camped it up a lot more than he did. It’s also very touching at the end when he shows genuine regret at Janice not realising her potential and lumbered with something of an obsessive martyr complex. And it’s certainly never dull. The worst episode in my opinion is “The Savage Curtain” which is so dull and talky and kind of pointless.

@@cliftonwebb5872 If they did allow starship captains in Starfleet, they should have shown that before the captain in Star Trek IV who got too close to the probe and her ship lost power. Showing that was also consistent with the idea that women aren't temperamentally suited to being starship captains. Since there were only about 12 ships like the Enterprise, TOS also could have shown a woman as a merchant-ship captain like the Antares that delivered Charlie in "Charlie X", but they didn't. I'm guessing this woman wouldn't be considered a beauty, either. Most every other woman in the series was beautiful and a potential love interest of one of the men. Vina was ugly and deformed and Pike agreed she should remain outside of society. The women in Mudd's women were plain when their pills wore off. I'm still not sure about the ending, which assumes they became beautiful due to attitude?! I can understand if she went to the bathroom and came back with better hair and makeup, but the real pills did something! Mudd's wife, Stella, was another undesirable. The show's subtext was a woman's value was to be beautiful and a love interest. Probably my worst episode is "In There in Truth No Beauty" with the blind woman and the alien that drives people insane due to its ugliness.

I just watched this last night. Not the best script, but not the worst. I know some people think this episode should be discarded from continuity because of Lester’s comment about not being able to be a starship captain because she’s a woman, but I didn’t receive it that way. Lester was terribly mentally ill, and had conspired and executed the deaths of several scientific party members as proof. Her perception was reality to her, but reality is not perception. It had already been established from the first pilot episode, and canonized in the episode “The Menagerie”, that women held command positions. Even the Romulans had a female commander. I didn’t see sexism, just a terribly mentally ill woman in need of help.

Ya know for a "ladies man " Kirk was pretty hated. Lester isnt the only one that wanted him dead. Id say half the guest stars tried to hurt him or kill him as part of the plot at some point.. Guys too. .Finney et al.
@sandal_thong8631

Finnegan who was an upperclassman didn't like him either. His rise in the ranks no doubt provoked resentment in the likes of Finney, who named his daughter Jame, but went insane and blamed Kirk. His classmates in that episode didn't think much of him either, and were quick to believe the rumors that he murdered Finney. I think there were no full commanders on ship when he got his promotion to Captain. Maybe that was so Lt. Commander Spock could be first officer, or no commander wanted to be on his ship. Still he generally was on good terms with other captains and superior officers, one or more of which would have been responsible for recommending and approving his promotion(s). However, I think this was the only woman who resented being his love interest. Knowing women and poetry he must know how to break up with women who fell in love with him, such that they don't hate him. He didn't have a problem that his ex might be prejudiced against him as prosecuting attorney. Janice Lester supposedly "hated her own womanhood" and wanted to be captain but either didn't have the qualifications and training, was denied it because she was a woman, or failed the psychosimulator test like Merik from "Bread and Circuses."

The Original Star Trek TV series may have lasted two more seasons like the Six Million Dollar Man and Star Trek The Next Generation instead of only 3 years if there were at least a few more two or three part story line episodes in the series instead of only one the Menagerie.

They needed an executive that championed the series to higher-ups and other executives to get Star Trek on a good night of the week, allow a good per-episode budget and shooting schedule. Supposedly, they got good ratings in a key demographic the first two seasons before they were moved to Friday nights when those people were out dating. I don't think another two-parter or season-ending cliffhanger would have changed anything. Maybe if TAS episodes were in rotation along with TOS episodes in syndication, TAS wouldn't have been cancelled so quickly.
