Thoroughly enjoyed the entire episode. They worked in the elements of why the storyline was unfolding in the manner it was, while at the same time, keeping the main story plot of BoT down to the scripting. No real need to get into too much detail about it, but I will highlight some of my personal favorite minor bits. I especially liked that the Farragut was a TOS Miranda class light cruiser, rather than a Connie. Fit in with that one-off line of Sam saying Jim was jealous of the Enterprise. Plus it showcased that, yes, there was more than one class of Starfleet vessel during the TOS era. I really liked the juxtaposition of Angela Martine being the one to bite it in this episode, where Robert Tomlinson was the (sole) casualty from the original. It added to the effect of how this was all wrong. The sickbay camerawork... I think that jarring fixed walking perspective style is a little overused by this point, but it does give that effect of the person walking being in a bit of a daze and shock. But after Ray Donovan, I am just a little burnt on that style. I do think you're wrong about Spock on the biobed, I think we needed to see that. Everyone goes on about how, "Oh, hey, Pike can avoid the accident now and we can just keep this series, please?!" Well, here's the result. I think they did a good job not lingering on it, and letting Jess Bush really sell how bad it is. Scotty chiming in was a heartwarming bit, though it did present a slight nitpick... why was Spock in the tube fixing the main phaser relays if Scotty was right there? Casting, obviously, but also it was strictly so Spock would be catastrophically injured. I get the reasoning behind it. In the original episode, the phaser control circuits on the bridge blew during the initial attack on the Enterprise, which Spock fixed. Because those circuits were below the Science station. Which is a nitpick for the original episode as that made absolutely no sense whatsoever in bridge design, because the dedicated Weapons console is on the complete opposite side of the bridge, with ties over to Helm which is also on the opposite side of the bridge from Science. Those circuits shouldn't have been anywhere near, much less running directly under the Science station. But because Spock fixed the phasers in the original, they had him fixing the phasers here. And while they made the phaser relay burnout make more sense in terms of ship design, it makes even less sense that Spock was the one to fix them at all, much less while the Chief Engineer is below handing him tools like a glorified apprentice.

Which is interesting when you consider TNG’s The Enemy. In that episode, Picard is facing off against a Romulan ship and decides to lower shields in order to beam up Geordie and a Romulan soldier. As this episode of SNW asserts, Romulans would see such an act as a sign of weakness and immediately attack. Pike’s gesture is similar to Picard’s. Both Captains trust their opponents to hold their fire. It’s a gamble that pays off for Picard, but not Pike. Are we to conclude that Romulans changed their attitudes after a century or that Picard was just lucky.

I rewatched Balance of Terror too. One thing that struck me is that Shatner’s Kirk although confident, charming and charismatic, isn’t the cocksure cowboy maverick that Paul Wesley and Chris Pine both played him as. Yes we all remember Shatner’s Kirk bluffed his way out of trouble in “The Corbomite Manuever” and cheated on The Kobyashi Maru test in Wrath of Khan, but in this episode Shatner Kirk second guesses himself, needs Bones to reassure him and isn’t the wild card that other actors play him as.

Each of us view these shows through different lenses. We always are appreciative for your views, but we have to agree to disagree, here. We rated this episode 10/10 (we have already watched it twice). We loved every moment of this show. Both of us loving TOS and even seeing Balance of Terror not too long ago...we loved how they blended the old with the new...to great success. My one thought...that will still change the future...is that NOW Captain Pike knows who and how the Romulans acts. He knows about their similarities with Vulcans (physically). More importantly, he knows about their view dialogue versus decisive and aggressive action. I feel, with just this knowledge, this cannot but change the future. Just a thought. We loved the lighting used in Balance of Terror. We loved that Lt. Erica Ortegas took on the Stiles role (without hurting her as a character). The direct recreations of scenes were done well. We agree with Sean Ferrick that it would have been a boon...if the actor who plays Sarek, James Frain...could have played the Commodore of the Romulan Bird of Prey. Just feel that that would have been a "chef's kiss" moment. The fish-eye lense was disorienting...and VERY effective. Also, seeing the fate of Spock (not just hearing about it), we think was very much a worthy moment. We agree that the Outpost Four administrator's death was cheesy. THAT could've been handled better...but not enough to dock the episode. We also really enjoyed Paul Wesley's James T. Kirk. Those are BIG shoes to fill...and as the episode progressed...we both believe he did VERY well. Not a parody, but a fresh look at such a Classic character. We believed that it WAS him. Thank you for all that you do. Putting your thoughts out for others to disagree with and maybe get mad about...it courageous. Thank you. We loved the season, and cannot wait to see what they have store for us in Season 2. PS - This episode didn't feel long to us. We were so sad that it was over...and wished we could just move on to S2 immediately. "Leave them wanting more", and they did.

I loved this episode. The end with Una being arrested was correct because Pike learned that 7 years ago Una was arrested and was in jail. So Pike returns in his time was 7 years ago and it followed the storyline. As you know Una was not on the Enterprise when Kirk was captain of the ship and Spock was first officer . I believe they are slowly moving the story to the time when Kirk took command and Pike was promoted and left the ship. Pike realizes that he can't change his fate and that Kirk is supposed to be there to prevent a war. Kirk personality and command style is different from Pike's Paul Wesley's performance as Kirk was to show the difference style he had to Pike. Kirk not being the captain of the Enterprise his personality is different and I think in this story it was toned down. It is not fair to compared Shatner or Pine because they were captain of the Enterprise. So I think we should wait to see more of Wesley' performance as Kirk in season 2 of this show. I like the way they used an old episode called the Balance of Terror and made it a story of.Pike commanding the Enterprise in the situation and we see a different ending which was a war that continues and Spock being hurt instead of Pike .Spock needs to live so he can work for peace. Pike is at peace with his fate Spock does owe Pike but he doesn't know why which makes what he does in The Menagerie more understanding .It is logical to him that he owe Pike .Taking Pike to Talos VI is his way to paying Pike back

Great episode and ending. The Kirk bit, I think, was played the way it is by design from Wesley. He doesn't want to be an exact copy of Shatner for one but this is also a alternative version so it's never meant to be 1:1 from the start. Another thing is that in the end this is Pikes show and episode, they don't want their new Kirk to overshadow him in his own central episode. The Una ending is also fine with me. I wouldn't say it's tacked on. I think it's great that they actually tied up a plot thread from her episode that I saw many fans arguing about. The fact they used it as a segway into season 2 is just a bonus. Now with next season they can start new plot threads with nothing hanging loose from season 1.

Seeing an older Pike pop-up in the maroon uniform (also my favorite), caused me to pretty much lose it! The redesign of the uniform was absolutely spot on.

I actually like Wesley as Kirk. I thought he did a fine job portraying Kirk, especially a version of Kirk that might be feeling a little held back in terms of his career. You have to remember this would be taking place during Pike's 3rd tour in command of the Enterprise, rather than vacating The Chair to Jim after his second 5-year deep space assignment. Meanwhile, the Farragut is a Miranda class light cruiser, which are more short term duty vessels rather than Deep Space Exploration ships. So Jim's likely feeling a little a jaded, especially considering that he's been given command of the same ship where he lost half his crew and his captain, and hadn't come to terms with the fact that it wasn't his fault.

Quality of Mercy was done really well. It has no overall impact on the original, while adding context to previous episodes. As for Kirk. First Impressions aren't always everything. It took me a few episodes to realize how amazing the Pike character was in Season 2 of Discovery. He was a charming man able to disarm the crew of Discovery, who were probably not going to trust whoever was made captain, unless it was from within the crew. I've never been a fan of Kirk in the TOS. He was so much better in the movies when they got him to stop over acting and the character became more likeable. So with this new actor, I'm indifferent to his performance. He also wasn't TOS Kirk. This was an alternate timeline so who are we to say they got Kirk wrong.

You're right that Paul Wesley wasn't a particularly compelling Kirk, but for the exact opposite reasons you stated - so much so that it's actually baffling you said it without a hint of irony. Wesley's interpretation was incredibly mild, the way he was constantly compromising and listening to Pike without insisting too hard on anything made him seem quite far removed from an action hero and almost too agreeable, especially considering that he and Pike were the same rank. He was adamant about destroying the Romulan BoP but not to the point of breaking or even bending any rules whatsoever. If anything, bringing up Pine's Kirk detracts even further from your point since that version was far more freewheeling and maverick. Pine was such a fratboy in his first outing as Kirk that he was a clear indication that the 2009 Trek writers didn't get Kirk beyond cultural osmosis and zeitgeist, especially given his womanizing and brawling. I have to press this point because I'm really not sure how you could contradict yourself so thoroughly like this. What exactly did Wesley do to make you think he was even remotely more of a wildcard than Pine's interpretation? There are a lot of complaints I have about this episode but your points about this version of Kirk are completely nonsensical.

I think your review was overly harsh. Yes, Wesley is miscast as Kirk. Yes, the fish eye view of Pike in sickbay was unnecessary. And yes, the ending with Number One felt tacked on. But overall, I loved the episode and think it was easily the best of the series thus far. Showing the extent of Spock’s injuries was absolutely necessary. To simply talk about it would’ve been a cop out. You claim the episode offers nothing new and yet you contradict yourself by acknowledging that the episode explains why Spock feels indebted to Pike. Prior to this episode, we never understood why Spock would risk his future to help Pike. Lastly, the episode offers a clear rebuke of Voyager’s finale. In that episode, a future version of the captain travels back in time to change history not caring about the consequences of her decision. But this episode drives home the message that, even if you have the best of intentions, you shouldn’t mess with the timeline. Maybe the writers didn’t have Janeway in mind when they wrote this, but I certainly did.

Also, Pike and Garth of Izore are both Fleet Captains. , What does that entail, is it like being a "Post Captain" in the Royal Navy in the age of sail? You get transferred in grade and don't go on half pay between assignments or get demoted to the grade of any other assignment you get. Is it like a CAPT who is Chief of Staff for an Admiral?

Awesome season, 10 episodes not enough, why does terrible Discovery have 14 episodes and SNW 10? Kirk, I think was fine and the audio cue I quite liked as it fed into the 60s styling of the episode. I loved this episode I think it was pretty much all ups for me. Id go as far as saying SNW stongest so far maybe?. I am not really enthused to see more of Kirk tbh, we have TOS seasons 1,2,3, animated and 5 movies of him, I want to see more of Pikes crew, we could have done with an Una and Ortegas spotlight, Hemmer was brilliant, why kill him off? I know the actor is scheduled to come back but it would need to be for a strong character. Also Chapel while we had a lot of her and Spocks relationship, she could have used a spotlight episode also. I really enjoyed the "holodeck" episode it was dumb but fun and Trek should always revert to being fun.

Kirk is a lot more complicated than the picture we see of him in this episode. How is it that Sam calls him a pack of wild cards, but then pressed because Kirk sounds like a loose cannon typed asshole, Sam then says that Kirk is as fine a captain as there is in the Federation. How can that be? Also in later years such a person would never gain the respect and loyalty of Spock and crew.

Damn !! What a downer. I thought this was an amazing episode. Guess I’m not as knowledgeable as I should be so I can properly not enjoy this series. I’m an incredibly Amazed with the overwhelming negativity associated with the criticism of almost everything sci fi & super hero related. Oh well. Might be better to just watch and enjoy and not look for the follow up details provided by KZitemrs

bruv - do you YT trek critics not watch trek or something? shatners Kirk was a swashbuckling, womanizing, action star matinee idol! how many fist fights and dames did he get involved with by NOT following the rules? unless that was in the starfleet behavior manual, that I never read! and inarguably shatners best performance in TWOK, it's his rule breaking that both gets him in trouble (ask, Saavik) and out of trouble (ask Spock) - I think SNW did a really great job with Kirk , as Wesley gave us subtle winks and nods to shatners OTT trademark non subtlety and my gawd you guys say trek gives you nothing new - but when they do you freak and when they give you the familiar, you complain!!! you can't please the never content!

@@treklad 3 seasons of TOS and 6movies established, fundamental to Kirks portrayal by shatner and the creator of character is that he is 1st a schlock action star with some brains and heart - and if we're being completely honest most of those brains and heart of the character Kirk come from Spock and bones, forming the id, ego and superego - I dunno maybe I'm just one of the few trek watchers that tries to be honest when assessing the old and new - and don't immediately give the old stuff an automatic pass bc nostalgia vs objectivity

@@SC-mq1eh I could not disagree more!!! TOS Kirk to me is the perfect embodiment of 60s America. An optimistic sense of exploration, willing to break rules and get into a fight but only to defeat ignorance and intolerance. Movie Kirk very different beast, older more reflective, willing to say "surrender" if it will lead to peace. An amazing character.

@@rhysholdaway I don't hate Kirk, but especially in this point in his timeline he WAS the action hero - the JJverse ran with that, as they should have - SNW & JJs portrayal are correct for his age - we don't get the more "reflective" Kirk until the movies

It's horrible, unoriginal, theft - copying full lines of dialog of a episode they already stole from. The original was about bigotry, this? Oh yeah, action, phasers, war. Good one.

my dude, bones and others constantly demeaning Spock about his cultural identify, ears and green blood are 100% bigotry - it was just a bit more glaring with the arrival of the romulans in TOS and SNW went there and addresses it - and when in trek WASNT there phasers. action and war?? not to mention SNW was spinning the TOS original from pikes POV vs what was originally kirks, so ofc it's going to borrow heavily from it! c'mon guy you're a trekkie, we use our brains, at least act like you know how to use it!

@@SC-mq1eh "There's no room for bigotry on my bridge. Mr!" You should do yourself a favor and watch the episode again. I imagine it's been years so you don't realize how good it was. And the older you get the better. The episode is because it is written for adults and not young people - And I mean children or young adults. No good Star Trek episode should only be about phasers and blowing things up. That's what SNW is. That's why it's bad Star Trek.

@@valueofnothing2487 "There's no room for bigotry on my bridge. Mr!" - except for countless times when we are degrading Spock for his pointy ears, green blood, and cultural values - do you even know what bigotry is? that's what SNW was addressing, the countless times Spock was openly put down because of his non human traits - I honestly can't believe that you guys missed that for 40+ years - probably why so many of your ilk are closeted or open women and minority haters - and likely why modern trek including the TNG era bent over backwards to try and make amends for past sins of the casual racism/bigotry of the past inherent in the TOS era and the main reason why TOS specifically, and even in the TNG era phasers and space battles weren't the norm were low budgets - but give those same producers some money for the movies and see how many 'splosions and pew pews we got! post 09 trek just has had some actual money to spend on efx, so they use it - but who knows, you may think TWOK or 1st contact are bad trek too or the dominion war is DS9
