The structure with the fountains in front of it is the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys, CA. It, and the adjoining Japanese gardens, have been used as a filming location for other productions, and this won't be the last time it is seen in Star Trek.

I like seeing an alien Picard! I don't care what people say, season 1 is creative and entertaining! I remember seeing it back in the 80s like it was yesterday (but yes, it gets even better as the years pass-the latter seasons are AMAZING!)

TNG Season 1 in particular always felt to me a lot like an updated continuation of the original series, as you said they were still getting their footing, but even as soon as season 2 everything really started to gel, and then by seasons 3 and 4 it really comes into its own with practically banger after banger with the episodes.

Well... Take this view of point. It's a total new ship class at that time. Only one sister ship, exists at that point. So it's not a bad idea, to train some chief technicans, for duty for the next ones, to be built. And this changes for the 1701- D. I promise...

I don't think the Indian guy was Chief Engineer....he was just the guy standing Engineering Duty Officer. The Chief Engineer in season 1 was the white guy with a beard, iirc. 🙂 On a submarine, all officers except the Supply Officer have to qualify for Engineering Duty Officer. This is the person who runs the nuclear reactor. Of course, there is still one person who is designated as Ship's Engineering Officer or Engineer, informally addressed as "Eng", as in "hey, eng, sir, can you sign this?". This is why, unless you're going for Supply Officer, anybody who wants duty as a submarine officer must have one year of calculus and one year of physics using calculus. 🙂 I can't speak for surface ships, but on submarines, the Captain is not usually in the Control Room as seen on Star Trek. There's an Officer of the Deck who stands on the podium there most of the time, and he's the guy who is in charge of general ship safety during his watch, unless the Captain or XO enters and takes over. Officer of the Deck is another watch that all officers are required to qualify on, and the Supply Officer also has to qualify for Officer of the Deck. The Control Room -- generally referred to as "Control" on the boat -- is the room you've seen in movies, it's the room with the periscope and the helm. 🙂 (as of 2008, there are now female officers and enlisted of all ranks on submarines! No female Captain yet, but there are many female officers, many female enlisted, and at least one female Chief of the Boat that I know of (the COB is the most senior enlisted person on the boat and acts as an advisor, and in charge of personnel, cleaning, ceremonies, etc.) I very much supported this, but I got out in 2003, so wasn't in the Navy when it happened. 🙂)

My favorite explanation is that Data was actively trying to act more human in these early episodes, like how he seems more emotional. It’s a new crew, so he’s putting on a false demeanor. The contractions are a part of it. Even later on he can use contractions when quoting literature or repeating someone else’s words. He seeems to not use contractions naturally, but he can choose to do it if he thinks about it.

28:09 If you noticed the actress playing the alien when she beamed aboard the ship - the scenes in the corridor - she had an entirely different wig. Marina Sirtis tells the story at one of the conventions about how she didn't like the actress, so Marina had hair and makeup change out her wig for the uglier one you see in the rest of the shots.

You will find that the TNG has a lot of A story / B story plotlines, quite unlike TOS. There was a major philosophical shift in allowing each of the characters to get more screen time.

So, the "A Plot / B Plot" is a common feature of Trek of this era. Seasons were longer than modern television and scriptwriters had room to explore such indulgences. Modern TV is very much "two plots? in THIS economy?"
