Enterprise 40% smaller sister ship with whole front section of the saucer missing, 1 engine missing the other 60% damaged... Wreckage, older smaller engine s, sections of Defiant type ships, other engineering sections, other random sections of ships...

@kylereese4822 There used to be an interactive game based in Q bringing you back to Wolf 359 in an attempt to safe the players in game characters father. Awesome John DeLancie hamming it up to max. The Pilot episode of Star Trek DS9 also goes a bit deeper in the fight as it leads character Benjamin Sisko lost the ship he was stationed on, and more. I think both those media showed all we needed to see of Wolf 359, without risking flanderization by modern SFX as this franchise does risks to fall victim to. Fun fact, Wolf 359 is an actual starsystem IRL, about 7 or 8 lightyears from our sun.

I know people talk about Pale Moonlight, obviously, but 'Duet' is as good an episode of television as anything Aaron Sorkin wrote for West Wing (bold claim but I stand by it) and Nog in the holosuite in the episode after the seige has similar vibes to Picard after the Borg. It was real hard to write this without spoilers but I think I managed it! (Also the episode re: Garak and the chip, good lord, that's a journey!) So to end the third season with this massive cliffhanger was a move that made a serious impression on audiences at the time. The end of thousands of lives that tried to fight back against Locutus and the Borg. To make matters worse, he was the cause of so much death and destruction. When Picard stood to look out the window, it was the fact that all of the guilt suddenly was creeping up and striking his heart. The silence at the end without any music as the end credits popped up was meant to convey that even though it was a victory, there was so much loss. Patrick Stewart nailed the acting.

The musical score is so amazing that I bought the CD. And in that final moment of the episode, the music swells with warmth and comfort as he looks at home, but then it trails off as there is the most distant little howling noise, like a wolf in the far distance, followed by an uneasy hint of the Borg theme with low metallic churning. As he looks again at home, he is haunted by the reminder of how close he came to overseeing its assimilation. He would have helped the Borg turn his planet gray and enslave every last living soul on it. Figuratively, the wolf came into the village and took him; it had him helpless in its jaws; it was carrying him off; it was compelling him to call out to the other wolves; and even though this wolf was shot down at the last second, deep down he knows there are more wolves hunting out there, someplace far away but not unreachable. For the first time in his life, the void of space with its array of stars is striking him as terrifying, utterly terrifying. The next episode is about whether he can reclaim the meaning in his life-- his passion for exploration-- after having had his very humanity stripped from him.

Star Trek is an ensemble show at the end of the day, not a Patrick Stewart vanity project to work out his own real life issues in the twilight of his life. It was only when a real director remembered that and brought the whole cast back, we got a story worth seeing. At the end of the day season 1 and 2 will be footnotes relegated to the dustbin of streaming history, and the vast majority of people will only care about season 3 in 5-10 years from now.

Details I love about these episodes: When you need to do a tough away mission requiring relentless physical strentth and courage, you send Data and Worf. "They have broken through the Mars defense perimeter." Chills. And a neat bit of world building that the orbit of Mars is the last line of defense before Earth. Riker telling Shelby he'll snap her back like a first year cadet -- but completely able to acknowledge and use her very real competence and creativity. Admiral Hansen being a bit pissed at even the suggestion that Picard is willingly helping the Borg. Troi facing up to Riker and telling him it would be "inappropriate" for him to go on the away mission. That might be the moment the Troi character begins to develop into something interesting. Picard's historical references in his conversation with Guinan. There are too many great moments and details!

"Family" should be considered part three of the story. Don't miss it. When BOBW first came out, I was part of a group of friends who were all massive Star Trek fans. One of our group had a satellite dish. He figured out that we could see the downloads that were intended for the TV stations that were going to Broadcast the show. This meant we could watch them, depending on what year it was, hours, if not days in advance of everybody else. Even better, no commercials! So we had these weekly watch parties. Another friend was visiting the day part one came down, and he watched it with us. Due to circumstances in his life, he wasn't able to watch TNG regularly. It was literally years before he got to see part two. "Mr. Worf, fire!" Was all we heard from him for those years. Followed quickly by don't tell me I wanna see it. LOL

@Cassie, Johnathan Frakes (a.k.a. "We need Q!" And Q knew that. That's why he introduced Starfleet to the Borg before the Borg could initiate a surprise attack. That introduction gave Starfleet a heads-up they desperately needed. Everything Q ever did was to help humanity, even when it looked like he was just playing games. I have a theory that Q has seen thousands, maybe millions of years into the future, and has seen what humanity will become. Also, he's seen millions, maybe billions of years into the past, and has seen what the Q Continuum once was. They were like unto us, and we are what they once were. One day, we will be the H Continuum, and Q is trying to prepare us for the way.

"Family" is definitely worthwhile watching. It's essentially a character-driven episode, but gives us a glimpse at Picard and his past while also showing him facing and recovering from the trauma of his ordeal with the Borg here. It acts in many ways as an unofficial 'Part 3' to this two-parter.

I'm so glad you finally watched one of my personal fav episodes of TNG. To help you understand that last ending when Captain Picard looks so ominous out the window. Well he's reflecting on the whole experience, remembering everything that's transpired. Gotta remember the battle of Wolf 359 was a Pearl Harbor scale like event for Starfleet why? 40 starships every one of them carrying roughly 1200 people on each ship. That means roughly over 40,000 lives lost that day all because of Captain Picard and he remembers all of it. Let that factor sink in terms of PTSD. Because Starfleet wasn't very knowledgeable about Borg assimilation, the hive mind possession of one's body etc so many at Starfleet will hate Picard because of this experience all thinking of Picard's involuntary involvement as betrayal and treason, especially for Captain Benjamin Sisko from Star Trek DS9 if you decide to watch that series next. This being all said I really hope you watch "I, Borg" to fully understand the mindset of a borg victim much better. Not to mention Star Trek First Contact the movie you'll love and appreciate SO MUCH more.

Jonathan Frakes (Cmdr. Riker) has more than a few other performance credits under his belt (like voicing David Xanatos in the Disney cartoon Gargoyles), as well as hosting shows like Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, but has focused as much on directing, including several TNG episodes in later seasons that are both adored ("Reunion", "The Quality of Life", & "The Chase") and notorious ("Sub Rosa"). On a personal note, I once met Mr. Frakes, as well as Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden at a convention in San Francisco (Starfleet Headquarters, baybee!!!), and they were the sweetest, most humble actors I have ever met.

Jonathan Frakes largely started out as a theatre actor early in his career and eventually moved to television in the 1970s. He had a lot of guest spots on shows, and a gig on a soap opera, The Doctors. I first noticed him in the miniseries, North and South, prior to TNG. Since then, he caught the directing bug during TNG's run and has mostly stayed behind the camera after the series finale. He's continued his association with Star Trek by directing many episodes of just about every live action series (except Enterprise).

Even years later, this is an excellent cliffhanger... but in context of the time it originally aired, it's soooo much better. 1) Riker's dilemma in the first part is mirrored by the lead writer Michael Piller. Was he getting too comfortable with Star Trek, should he move on a show created by him, was he afraid of the "big chair," as Riker put in, show creator and showrunner, responsible for the whole thing, nobody to fall back on? 2) The series was syndicated, meaning it had no specific television network producing the show, the studio that made the show was responsible for making it available to air. At the time, new syndicated programs were rare, and few had lasted as long as TNG. Nobody knew if there was going to be a 4th season at the time, and even if there WERE, nobody knew if Patrick Stewart would be interested in continuing as Captain Picard. So when Picard is assimilated by the Borg, that might have been the end of the character. And when Riker gave the order to use the boosted weapon against the Borg, that might have been the end of the series. The audience was left not knowing how, or even IF, things were going to continue for MONTHS. Even when the 4th season was confirmed, it was still several months before the show returned. There are so many great moments in this, it could almost be reeditted for a a feature. And if anyone ever doubted Whoopi Goldberg's acting chops, these two episodes should disavow them completely. Her manner with Captain Picard and Captain Riker is subtly different, while still giving needed advice and remaining cautiously optimistic while still giving Riker the kick he needs to realign his perspective. She never tells either man what they NEED to do, but gives them the encouragement to find their own path themselves. Jonathan Frakes had made a few tv appearances before TNG, but his biggest role before Riker was in the TV miniseries North & South, and after as the second host of Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, an anthology show in which almost unbelievable short stories are presented and the viewer challenged to guess which ones, if any, are true or not. However, since then, aside from a few appearances, his career has mostly been behind the camera. He's directed at least a few episodes of every Star Trek series since TNG, as well the films Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. On TV, he's directed episodes of The Orville, Roswell, The Librarians, Leverage, Castle, Dollhouse, Burn Notice, Agents of Shield, and more.
