What made the original series so good was the writing of course and the acting chemistry between the trio of Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley. However, I think what really puts the original series in a class by itself is the background music, which is so much more memorable than the bland music in the subsequent series.

The soundtrack in general was way better. The noises of the ship were distinctive. Joe, so very true. I’ve been a devoted fan since 1970. I watched those 79 episodes over and over again until I enlisted in the Army in 1976. (As you may know, in the 1970s we didn’t have a whole lot of choices in what to watch). In the Army guys would ask me why I didn’t sound like I was from Texas, their opinion about what a Texas accent should sound like having been influenced by TV & movies. I didn’t have an answer then but years later realized it was because of watching _Star Trek_, and consciously trying to enunciate like Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner. From 1976 until about a month ago I could count on both hands the number of episodes of TOS I’ve rewatched. (I’ve watched all the films, of course, and TNG, DS9, STV, and STE). Then, recently, I decided to rewatch the entire series from beginning to end. I’m about halfway through season two. When I was watching it the 1970s I was a, frankly, ignorant adolescent. Now I’m watching it at 63 through the lens of a lifetime of education & experience. I’m struck by how good the writing is. Much of it could be described as prose. You can tell that that generation of writers grew up actually *reading* (books), as opposed to playing video-games and surfing the web. And like you said, how good the background music is. And yes the chemistry among the actors was great. After serving in the Army for three years, I served in the Army Reserve for twenty-one years, and was recalled to active duty for Desert Storm. So I’m viewing Captain Kirk’s ability to command from that perspective. He’s a pretty good commanding officer, IMO. Decisive. Some have said that Picard is the better officer. Kirk has the right command style for the kind of unpredictable “wild west” environment he was in. Picard has the better command style for the “more civilized age” he was in. It’s the difference between General George S. Patton Jr. in WWII, and General Colin Powell in Desert Storm. I’m reminded of the saying, “In peacetime, soldiers hate warriors.” Based on what I’ve read, Gene Roddenberry could be a jerk. “Great men (tend to) have great flaws.” But I’m so very grateful to him for his creation and it’s optimistic vision of a possible future for humanity that, among other things, influenced a generation to go into the sciences. (And taught some of us to enunciate clearly).

the way Nimoy goes from perfectly in character to "wrong let's do it again was really moving, professional. He didn't say "you're wrong" or "you did it wrong" and immediately went to "let's" as in "us". VERY classy and such a quick shift in personae!

In Shatner's book "Star Trek Memories" he writes about his interview with George Takei where Takei revealed, years after the series was cancelled, how much Shatner was disliked by the supporting actors...especially by himself and Jimmy Doohan. This news apparently came as a shock to Shatner, who recalled the cast members as being supportive of each other as performers...exactly like the egalitarian set depicted in these outtakes. The in-jokes about actors relating poorly to each other off camera from the comedy "Galaxy Quest" hilariously tapped into this typically suppressed dimension of show business egotism on nearly everyone's part.

Zombies of the Stratosphere. Nimoy’s character did not survive; he was the last to die.

i so wish the show could have had a 5 year run and end with the ship returning to earth, nothing after ever topped the tv show, the show was even better than the later films

it s 2020 August will we even see the entire volume s 1/2/3 ???? Amok time has a hole 1.59 seconds missing " kirks body " beams up with Dr Mc Coy camera pans over towards Leanord Nimiy spock then he beams up as a volume 2 like to see that footage I saw on scifi days of trek restored also would enjoy the scifi channel interviews of the actors included if they ever add or update lrevious transfers on bluray stink voice tracks blocked by music
