The first episode of this review ended with the credits showing that Colm Meaney as "First Security Guard". He was also credited as "Transporter Chief". It was just after this that his character got a name. Colm read the script and thought that he was being fired and replaced with a "Chief O'Brien", not knowing that was actually beginning his life as "Miles O'Brien", a significant "Star Trek" character for many years.

And all of these First episodes of The Next Generation is like learning your letters and vowels and the sounds they make. You need these basic understandings to understand what comes afterwards. And you see things like how Picard deals with prime directive and Wesley Crusher in particular. And you understand how Worf is a proud warrior and does not have a lot of goofiness to him, he's always so serious . They are the building blocks of the future.

Oh, and I saw your sister Tara's video this week saying she was stepping back from KZitem due to lack of audience to generate sufficient revenue. I suggested she return reacting to short form videos, as many channels I watch started that way and only moved to reacting to movies once they'd built a large enough audience. One channel started by reacting to 5-10 min clips of stand up comics, another started by reacting to songs (one per video), another watched short videos off of KZitem of other people presenting science and philosophy, thoughts they wanted to explore. There's lots of options. I repeat my suggestions here because I don't know if Tara bothers to read comments on her old videos at this point if she's not bothering with YT at the moment. Just thought I'd suggest it in case she wants to get back into it next year. :)

@N0-1_H3r3

The Prime Directive is an important and often-debated part of Star Trek, but it isn't always explained very clearly. Starfleet General Order One, also called The Prime Directive, is basically a prohibition against interfering with the social, cultural, or technological development of any civilisation deemed not to have achieved an equivalent level of societal and technological advancement to the Federation. It applies most strongly with regards to civilisations that have not yet developed faster-than-light communications or propulsion: a culture that has developed Warp Drive and subspace radio will inevitably encounter other civilisations on their own, but Starfleet is not allowed to interfere with cultures that *haven't* reached that point. Beyond that, when dealing with other cultures, the Prime Directive holds that Starfleet personnel should respect and follow the laws, traditions, and cultural norms of worlds on which they are guests, and not to needlessly involve themselves in the politics or social development of other cultures. The punishment for breaching the Prime Directive can vary a lot: Starfleet tends to judge each infraction on its own merits and context, and apply punishment accordingly. I tend to look at it as having two purposes. First, it reminds Starfleet Captains, who often operate away from any higher authority, that they are not to 'play god' with other civilisations. Secondly, it is about consent: don't get involved in another culture's business unless they invite you in.

This show introduced me to the concept of "nitpicks." Nitpicks are small, insignificant and often humorous inconsistencies in the show. Like for example, as you continue through the seasons watch for how many times they forget to use their com badges. In one episode Picard will tap his com badge and say, "Picard to Commander Riker", but then in another episode he'll just say aloud, "Picard to Riker . . ." without tapping his com badge. There are also three episodes where Data uses a contraction even though he's not supposed to be able to. You will also see them say in the turboshaft, "Ten-Forward", but when the turboshaft doors open and they step out you'll see the deck number is 3 or 5 instead of 10. Lol.

Jen, the Prime Directive, as used in the first couple of seasons (as well as in TOS), basically states the Federation won’t interfere with how other worlds run themselves. But in later seasons (as well as later series like DS9 and Voyager), it evolved into the Federation not interfering in the natural development of pre-warp civilizations. The season 4 episode, “First Contact”, delves deeper into this.

I gotta say, watching your reactions to TNG takes me back to when I was 10/11 years old and first seeing the show and all these episodes the first time they were on the air back in the late eighties. I love Star Trek in all its forms, TOS was my gateway, but Next Generation is my show. I grew up with it. I remember being a young 5th grade kid when it premiered, I was just about to start my senior year of high school when the show ended, I was in college when the TNG movies came out and here I am in my mid forties, enjoying the final season of Star Trek: Picard. Seeing you react to these episodes brings me back to how I felt as a child watching this show, being excited, thrilling to each episode, just having fun seeing it; I also liked seeing Wesley, a kid close to my age and seeing these adventures from his perspective as well. 11:17 Mark! Howdy, Jen Murray! 🤠 Just so you know, during the 1980s at both "Frontier City" in Edmond, Oklahoma and in "Six Flags Over Texas" in Arlington, Texas, they sold popular mementos, especially to girls, and then especially to cheerleaders, or at least in my high school class of 1982, that were day-glo and glow-in-the dark rubber tubes, filled with a chemical. They were used as shoe strings, hair accessories, necklaces, and other forms of adornment that looked their best, when worn by girls. I bought some, and learned that they could be linked together. I was trying to make a multi-colored variation of Wonder Woman's golden lasso! However, it didn't work well, because they were too fragile. To keep them glowing they required freezer storage, and I guess one of my elders trashed them. But my point is, to make that old-fashioned weapon look futuristic and/or alien, that's what they used! But one of the thicker ones that got used as saahes/belts. 🖖

Regarding your comment on the "different" uniforms you saw at the beginning of the episode: those are the official "dress" uniforms which are worn at official events or diplomatic meetings like this one. They're like the dress uniforms that the TOS crew wore in "The Menagerie" when Spock was on Trial for taking Pike back to that planet. For the Prime Directive, there's a couple of episodes that deal with it on the original (and more later that also deal with it). "Patterns of Force" would be interesting, but I think KZitem would yank it down for... reasons. "A Piece of the Action" would probably be a good choice as it's a lot more light hearted than some of the other choices.
