Diving into this now on a calibrated 55" TV, lol. I'm so glad Paramount finally got us all the films properly scanned and mastered in 4K on physical media! When it comes to Trek, Paramount usually does "the right thing" (TM), but man it can take them forever. I'll definitely pick these up soon. I can't even begin to calculate how many "kitchen remodels" I've helped finance for Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley, etc., LOL. Goodbye 2009 Wax Fest Blu-rays! It's a good thing that most of our cinema history was captured on 35mm analog film. We've finally reached the point where digital can capture the detail and dynamic range of analog film. Thank you, James, for all your effort!

For me it’s hard to say which of the 4,is my favourite. I kind of favour Generations- as I remember winning an auction at a convention here in Adelaide Australia in which George Takei , Denise Crosby & Marc Alamino was present . The prize was a resin statue of Kirk & Picard on horses (Applause was the manufacturer) The film was also at a time I was having surgery that changed my life and things looked bleak . Action - wise First Contact is a slightly better action film balanced with humour and tension between the characters . Yet Generations reminds us time is precious . I also enjoy Nemesis purely for the fantastic Goldsmith score and the moving sacrifice at the end of the film .

Hi James, great reviews as always. No one on YT holds a candle to your in-depth film reviews. I’m not a Trekkie but I do own the 6-movie 4K Star Trek collection and watched the original TV episodes as a kid. I just can’t get beyond how Leonard Nimoy was treated in the making of the Star Trek: Generations movie. That movie could have and should have been great. Nimoy should have been given the creative freedom as director to have the script rewritten as he wanted. No pun intended but the “bridge” collapsed for me because of Nimoy being disrespected and I never could cross over to another Star Trek generation.

🥰 Thanks so much, I really appreciate hearing how highly you esteem me & my channel, I continually work hard to provide premier review videos for all of you to watch & enjoy & it means a lot all your continued support!👌 I do want to chat about & address your comments about these Star Trek films & series & hope to give you an alternative view: 🤔 I understand what you are saying about Leonard Nimoy, but I do feel that’s a bit harsh criticism for you never even giving this crew or movie series a chance! Because you are missing out on an amazingly great cast of characters & one of the best Star Trek films of all time (First Contact) & there is some great storytelling in The Next Generation series overall that includes Leonard Nimoy & his character of Spock in a big multi part story in the TNG TV series! But this crew really enhanced the overall Star Trek storylines & added to the vision of TOS while embarking on exciting new adventures that really shouldn’t be missed by even light Star Trek fans! I hope you will reconsider giving these films a chance especially on these amazing 4K UHD📀 releases! I think you will find a lot of enjoyment especially with how they tied TOS to TNG in Generations & I loved how they lovingly & heroically handled Captain Kirk in the film too!🖖😉
@johnbednar3191
Жыл бұрын
It’s just something I’m intransigent on. Based on Nimoy saying the Generations script needed a rewrite from page one, I will always see it from Nimoy’s perspective. His character gave balance to the Captain Kirk character and vice versa and that’s how it should have ended and not Spock just being erased with a few meaningless lines. Nimoy was right to take himself out of the picture rather than severely compromise his artistic integrity as actor and director. The studio was in a hurry to get the picture done. As far as anything that came after the Generations movie, I do not doubt what you say in terms of quality storytelling but I prefer to live in my bubble on this one🫧😜

James, thank you for the excellent review as always! I'm so excited to watch these in their best format since theaters! I saw each of these in theaters with my family. I worked at the theater when Nemesis came out and it was sad that it ended the movies. I really like the alternate ending of Nemesis best. I'm surprised to hear there's an audio improvement. My understanding was that it was the same audio as before. While reviewing other discs I have noticed "the same" audio on the blu ray and 4K that the 4K has greater clarity and power. (See The Sum of All Fears). I am beyond excited for these to arrive at my house this week! I really want to watch First Contact on First Contact Day! I will say, I enjoy watching even my least favorite Star Trek movies over 99% of what is coming out these days. Thanks again! Here's to TOS and TNG on 4K and VOY and DS9 on Blu-ray!

@@InSearchofPhysicalMedia before I moved I had set up a Sony Str-DN1060 with 7.2 speakers. Sony CS front right and left and sub, then some bose bookshelf type for the back 4. The 2nd sub was some cheap pawn shop one and wasn't needed with the nice sony one but I left it there so I could have the .2, but since we moved I haven't set it back up yet. Now I most frequently use a Sony HTST5000 7.1.2 soundbar (I know I know, not the same). I have listened to things on the receiver and speakers vs the soundbar and while nothing can compare, the directional bouncy atmos simulation does actually throw the sound around the room to where I can hear helicopters overhead or things moving thru the sound field pretty good. The best way I can describe it is you get the essence of the surround field but it's just weaker if that makes sense. So next I need to get a receiver that can do atmos and dts x and either get some speakers on the ceiling or use the ones you put on top of the R and L to get the bouncy atmos effect. While we are at it, I have a Sony OLED XBR-65A8H that I calibrated and I also have a professionally calibrated Sony XBR-85X950H from Value Electronics. For players I have a Sony X700, Sony X800M2, and (at your strong recommendation) Panasonic UB820. I have not delved into a region free player yet. Well there you go! You asked for it!🤓🤓

@myfirevideos @kenpope 😜I will finally answer both of your same questions LOL!! To share some behind the scenes, as a professional reviewer I can NEVER give anything ever a perfect 10.0 review score because NOTHING in life is EVER truly 💯 PERFECT! Every release has something even small & tiny that can be found wrong, so therefore the closest a release can ever legitimately get to a 10.0 review score would be a 9.9 review score! So as a human being it’s definitely hard sometimes because as a big fan of some releases I have to take my fandom completely out of the equation every single time I professionally review something here on my channel especially while calculating my review scores that way it always keeps my review scores consistently accurate!👌 Hopefully this helps to answer & explain all this for both of you!🖖😉

Hey! Great comprehensive review! I came here because my experience has been completely opposite. I find the 2009 blue rays really pop compared to the 4k release. The grain is really distracting on the new ones and they seem dull overall.. On my set the images you have on top could be completely reversed. I found this with the Kirk and Spock films too. Strange because I don’t really experience this with other films/sets. I have a Sony x700 player and Sony OLED A80K tv. Let’s assume I have calibrated fairly correctly as this is the only time I’ve run into this. (But admittedly not professionally). Any ideas?
@InSearchofPhysicalMedia
Жыл бұрын
🤔So by your comments I can easily tell it’s very simple, your 4K TV & 4K Player are NOT🚫 professionally or correctly calibrated at all & when Dolby Vision content is enabled it’s going to the separate sub settings that’s causing all the colors & images to darken & lose the correct color gradings & you also have your color tone mapping incorrect & off for all Dolby Vision content & that’s specifically why you notice it wayyyy worse of an issue when playing 4K UltraHD discs with Dolby Vision enabled! It’s simply your 4K TV & Player have many mapping & settings that are causing all the errors & issues your explaining & that’s specifically why you are not seeing the true native 4K image thats actually present on each of these 4K discs the way they are intended to be seen because your equipment is NOT calibrated & setup properly or correctly! It seems a large majority of people simply don’t know that there are separate sub settings & menu options that appear only when specifically Dolby Vision discs are inserted & being displayed on you equipment, so some of those settings & options CAN ONLY be adjusted when you have a Dolby Vision disc actually playing so it enables the sub set of settings menu! But that will only partially fix part of your issue because your tone mapping & color gradient is still producing a false image for any 4K discs to begin with! Also, I just made a big post just recently about some of these issues people run into & encounter because of how complex 4K tech can be, the post is available now here on my KZitem Chanell’s community section explaining a bit more about this also! Hopefully my long explanations helps you to understand some of the 4K technology & the issues your having with your equipment a bit better!🤟😉

I popped Star Trek First Contact 4K Blu-ray in to skim around and check it out. My initial reaction was that it's certainly not going to win any awards for best looking film on the format. Overall felt a little bit soft, without the razor crispness found in the best titles. HDR, I felt, could have been more impactful in some scenes, particularly when phaser fire, photon/quantum torpedos, etc. are in the mix. Grain was a little heavy in some spots. I was looking at it thinking, I'm not sure this is anything a standard blu-ray version couldn't have handled almost as well. I bet the old blu-ray will basically look the same. Boy, was I wrong! Holy Hannah, that old blu-ray looks TERRIBLE by comparison. All the grain has been scrubbed from the old blu-ray, resulting in some light DNR-style smearing, but not as bad as many DNR-heavy films. But what struck me was the artificial sharpening being used. It feels like when you take a picture on your iphone and dial up the sharpness setting. It gives faces, in particular a very harsh feeling. In addition, the contrast is turned way up on the standard blu-ray as compared to the 4K. Usually, the 4K version of a movie will have higher contrast vs the SDR version, but here it's the opposite. The thing is, the 4K HDR contrast feels good. The blu-ray takes it too far, which, when combined with the artificial sharpening and DNR leaves the whole thing looking so bad. After doing the A-B comparison on several scenes I never want to watch the old blu-ray version again. It is a night and day improvement on the 4K disc. Way more than I'd expected. The 4K disc has natural film grain restored, far more natural skin tones, better resolution of fine details, no unnatural sharpening filter, appropriate contrast levels. Again, it doesn't really feel to me like something that couldn't have been done on a standard blu-ray, but the old blu-ray was apparently just THAT BAD and this new 4K disc very much isn't. For those wondering, I am watching on a 77" LG CX OLED in a dark room. Panasonic UB-820 for the 4K disc. PS3 for the standard blu-ray. 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos/DTS-X sound setup, though this movie has a 7.1 track - no Atmos.
