The hidden fortress isn't that similar I don't think. Basically just the story follows two characters like R2-D2 and C-3PO, but they're not the protagonists.

Yes! The dynamics of the characters are quite similar but also the tone of it matches Star Wars. It's a big, fun action-adventure movie and I really recommend it as an introduction to Kurosawa movies.

Honestly, to me it sounded like someone just ran it through Google Translate and then read it out loud, but not as a native Japanese speakers. The sentences also sound unnatural because of the vocabulary choices.@@Matt..S

I'd say using DeepL would be a better choice for translating sentences, it translates stuff into sounding more natural. It still uses "anata" for "you" often though

Interestingly, Toshiro Mifune, one of Japan and the world's most legendary actors was originally casted to play Obi-wan Kenobi but he turned down that role, so this imagining is not so far fetched

I genuinely love this concept. Maybe it could only ever work as a teaser but as it is, it’s perfect. The costumes and characters, how the shots are framed and especially that trickling synth line in the back. Top work.

Given that Star Wars was heavily influenced by Kurosawa's films (New Hope's plot is literally a re-telling of Hidden Fortress in space) a Japanese setting is fitting.

My Japanese isn’t that great, but it’s pretty clear the translations are very literal haha. Adds to the appeal in my opinion, even if it’s not done “correctly.”

I like how whatever dictionary/translation bot/newbie translator was used for the dialogue tries to translate all the terms to fuction in Japanese, but the actual Japanese translations just mangle it like za foosu, daaku saido etc.
