The score for Star Wars is a massively iconic score that screams action and adventure in the cold darkness of space in a galaxy far, far, far away. Looking back, it harkens back to the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers serials with the heavy orchestral cues along with the credits crawl. I have heard the soundtrack, and many renditions that were fair but varied on pace and instrumentation. John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra are THE REAL DEAL. I remember watching Evening At Pops when John was conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. The guest conductor was C-3PO accompanied by R-2D2. I think actors Anthony Daniels and Kenny Barker were playing their iconic roles in the episode.

The resemblances to The Planets (as well as Stravinsky's Rite of Spring) are because George Lucas used that music for the temp tracks as he was storyboarding the film (his "space opera"). Temp tracks are common practice in commercial filmmaking, with composers often being instructed to emulate that music as closely as possible without infringing copyright. There are instances in which John Williams was original as a composer, but Star Wars Episode IV is, on the whole, not one of those. In his composing of the score to A New Hope, Williams did what he was hired to do (stay close to the temp music).
