Nah, it's because Jar Jar was supposed to be a huge comedic appeal to the movie (much like C-3P0 and R2 were for A New Hope) and if they fucked it up it would be a large detractor for the movie which ended up actually happening. The Jar-Jar sith lord fan theory is well constructed but at the end of the day, that's all it is - a fan theory.

The movies get darker as they go along, culminating in revenge of the Sith, the darkest SW movie of all. Which is the point of the Trilogy. It's not a "Hero's Journey," it's an "Epic Tragedy." Episode 1 is meant to show the galaxy in a state of innocence, not knowing war. If the people working for Lucas here are "Yes men," then that's always been the case. The Prequels were made by the same Lucasfilm veterans that made the Original Trilogy, Indiana Jones Trilogy, Young Indiana Jones, Special Editions, etc.

Lucas is a creative storyteller, that’s his greatest talent. I just don’t think his directing is great. We all have different strengths in different areas. Well, he directed 3 iconic, cult classics within the space of few years, that were completely different from one another. THX-1138, American Graffiti, and Star Wars. And so far, the most highly praised SW film, at the time each was released, was Episode 4-A New Hope, the one he directed. Not including the recent films, the 2nd most highly praised SW film was Episode 3- Revenge of the Sith, also directed by him.

We didn't need to see Anakin as a child; the details about his mother's death and his slaughtering of the sand people should've all been revealed through cleverly-written expository dialog. He should've already been the rebellious brooding asshole we see in Episode 3, making his rise even more unlikely (Yoda calls Anakin "too old" to train in Episode 1 - imagine if he was already 18, and what kind of consequences would arise from someone so emotive being trained to use the force?). The end of Episode 2 could've shown him switching sides, and Episode 3 could've been all about the rise of the Empire with some actual screen time for Darth Vader.

Way the hell back in the 1990s I subscribed to _Star Wars Insider_ magazine. I remember reading the issue which divulged a few details about the upcoming _Episode I_ Notably the publication stated that we would first be introduced to Annakin Skywalker when he is just a little boy and that he starts out as A Slave. I remember thinking to myself how brilliant that was. It seemed to make sense, Luke was just a frustrated farm boy, but his dad would come from a much harsher environment. Visions of a soot-faced Annakin Skywalker, chipping away in some inhospitable, cramped mine with some sort of lazer-pick axe flashed in my head; or perhaps he would be slaving on some sort of train tracks, laying rail for a Star-Wars esque railroad. That was a perfect way to get the audience emotionally invested in this kid. He's a survivor, a salty dog even as a grade schooler...Instead we got Jake Lloyd, sitting around polishing a few props, and he's even allowed to go home before dark.

+samuraigeorge71 exactly, film 101. if you are making serials, the stories must align. if he had done that then Anakin would have been in his late 20's at the start. Lucas was the king of blowing it. @honkeykong9563

+samuraigeorge71 The back story was still vague enough so that Episode 1 could have featured Anakin as an actual slave. Owen could have been a slave as well. There was the breadth of an entire universe to work with. For Episode 1, George Lucas failed to create so much as a single character for the audience to identify with; the only exception _possibly_ being OB1, but what we know and like about him is all based solely on the cannon from 4, 5, and 6.

There’s an interesting story about the making of “The Incredibles”, where the producer, John Walker, had to talk the director, Brad Bird, out of an original ending that would have had Syndrome killed by Mr. Incredible. These two argued with each other forever about it. At one point, Walker said “I’m just trying to get us past the finish line” to which Bird responded with “I’m trying to get us past the finish line in first place”. They probably didn’t enjoy working together, but their combative relationship was just what the movie needed.

They had a badass little Anakin Skywalker - futureVader kid right there in front of them and they went with Cabbage Patch Kids Face instead... You just can't look away no matter how awful it gets... Matt Kindig The only assassination in this video is the murdering of the Star Wars franchise by none other than George Lucas and his loyal pack of yes men. Go out and do some research. Look into the behind the scenes for the original trilogy, and look at how vastly it differs from the making the of prequels. Go and read some of the horror stories in the accounts of people who have suffered working under this man. The reason the original movies came out to be the masterpieces they're revered as today was because there was people there to stop Lucas, and tell him, no, that idea is terrible. Just to put it into perspective, in the original screenwriting for A New Hope according to Lucas, Luke was supposed to be a 65 year old man with a robot head, Han Solo was an anthropomorphic frog, and C3PO was a shady, car salesman-type character. That should say enough. He may have created Star Wars, but if it weren't for the people around him who shaped it into what it is today, it would have just been a shitty sci fi flop in the 70s.

that's a good idea, but I feel like it's too predictable. I feel if Anakin was misunderstood/shunned tipping him over to the dark side from an initially happy (gets to see the stars, no longer a slave, etc), excited youth, to a misanthropic, hateful young adult. Not sure how his mother would/could be involved, but she could be some kind of catalyst too. mistrust and downright disrespect from other Jedi because of his age and some (perceived by Anakin) jealousy could be a factor

Carrie could have been a Marvel mutant if it had been born outside of Stephen King's imagination. I watched that movie for the first time in decades and was amazed at Sissy Spacek's performance. If nothing else, Anakin should have been in his teens if George Lucas needed for him to be younger than Mark Hamill. To cast a minor in the role of Anakin was the height of hubris, I feel. ***** Eh, even though many people would disagree with me, (which is an understatement), TPM was my favorite of the prequels. I won't agree with you on the "not bad at all" part though. It was a very flawed movie. Just to name a few, in true snarky nitpicking asshole fashion; Jar Jar Binks Neimoidian accents Child actor Space politics Jokes that don't fit the overall tone Overuse of CGI etc.

The biggest reason why this movie sucks is because George had control over everything. I bet a lot of the people in charge of the film didn't agree with George, but no one was capable of facing him and tell him he was doing wrong. If you search for videos, you can see how people agreed with him on anything he said.

+Matt Black Yes, George is talented, but he's not perfect. He makes mistakes just like everyone else. If they didn't agree with him then they should have told him. In the old trilogy, there were other people, including the actors that had to tell George about some of the things that wouldn't work.

+Xesthan Lately, I came to the conclusion that George is someone with a Vision and great imagination and the Prequels were his opportunity to express everything he wanted to express visually and in terms of story-telling. Like a Child given a canvas and lots of colors. He had the money and the influence to always get the last word and to do whatever he wanted to do. With the Original Trilogy he was hindered by the technical limitations of the time, less money and, frankly, people who talked some sense into and guided him along the way. Now, I can't look into his head but that probably irritated him and with the prequels he was free to do his own thing. I may not be entirely satisfied with the outcome, but I came to accept that. To sum up my feelings toward the prequels, except that I always really liked Ep.3: I made my peace with them.
@Xesthan

I can see that, though the main thing that kept people from telling George what they didn't agree with was the fact that they couldn't really bring themselves to do it. If more people were willing to challenge him, things might have been different, but I guess we'll never know. No need to live in the past. Though yes, I actually really liked Episode III.

This is what happens when a director has total control and limited ability. Lucas may have had a great vision but he is not a good story teller. He also doesnt seem to know how to do character development. This is typical hollywood politics. Having worked in this world I can tell you its very much a kiss ass game. Nobody goes against the king. The jobs are to good and pay to well to risk never working again.

Anirudh Menon something happened when Lucas became popular, or had been hidden when he was not, but whatever it was, he lost the keen eye he'd originally had, or forgot the epic hero's journey motif that episode 4 was soaked in. By the time of episode 6, we can already see Lucas losing his vision here and there. He forgets there and, then 14 years after that, that the themes in these movies are for teens and adults. Issues of identity and loyalty. But instead Lucas starts idealizing his children and starts incorporating goofiness, which fails in a PG13 themed story (ideally). The rest of the bad writing is overly complicating the plot because it seems like he started with the effects and filled in a plot, rather than having a clear and repeated goal for the protagonist to achieve and for one antagonist to combat. Too many underdeveloped people. If Lucas hadn't added in the goofiness, the prequels would have still sucked like Lost sucked....too many starts and too few finishes to any ideas. My statements on Lucas are all personal opinion and supposition, as I have no idea if I'm right... I just know he lost vision of the story or never had a vision and got lucky with episodes 4 and 5,some with 6.

I believe we change throughout our life. I think our circumstances have alot to do with our creativity and ability. I think back in the beginning when Lucas made American Grafitti he was a very different person then the wealthy believer in his own hipe guy today. When he was young he was creative and motivated to make something special in order to succeed in film making. Creativity usually comes from struggle to make it. He lost that edge years ago and that creativity with it.

He was a kid. He didnt know what good acting was. The only reason people blame him is because he was one of the main characters that isnt a generally good or famous actor like Natalie Portman, or Liam Neeson (Good actors wasted.) Ewan did good with what was given to him though.

well, apparently some ignorant douchebags didn't knew better and blamed him for the role. Jake Lloyd was also teased a lot and bullied in school, he became pretty rotten because of that. Mistr Dee It may have not been his fault, but he was a bad actor. Most kids that age are going to be bad actors, I don't know why GL was so adamant about having Anakin be a little kid anyway. I feel sorry for him and of course it wasn't his fault but his acting was shit, simple as that. But then again even Samuel Jackson was guilty of bad acting in these movies, and he's usually an awesome actor, so it's pretty obvious that Lucas can be blamed for it

The production of this trainwreck alone is ideal to be written into a historical movie. If the messed-up production of Tommy Wiseau's The Room could be documented into a book and a movie adaptation, why not Phantom Menace?
