There were a few other things added that shouldn't have been, such as Hayden Christensen at the end, or Vader shouting "Noooo...". In my opinion, they diminished things a bit. However, they did make some GOOD changes. Removing Vader's eyebrows is something trivial that actually needed doing. The galactic celebrations were nice, but kind of unrealistic... how would the whole galaxy know what happened so fast? Mehh, just my own bias, I suppose.

My story about watching this for the first time as a teenager, in the film's first run: _A long time ago, in a movie theater about 30 blocks from here ..._ Unlike _A New Hope_ where I saw the film in a Cinerama theater, I saw _Return of the Jedi_ at the Stuart (now Roccoco) Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was one of those Grand Dame theaters: originally built for live theater, symphony orchestra, and touring companies. In 1943, the Stuart was converted to solely a movie theater and run by Paramount Pictures. At the same time, the backstage area was sold and turned into a theater-themed nightclub, Barrymore's, which also still exists today. The Stuart Theater occupied six floors in the 13-story building Stuart Building. Seating capacity was 1,850, including two balconies. She had a beamed and panel designed ceiling and six chandeliers. The interior walls were of stone and terra cotta. Faux gold inlays lined _everything_ . She was a beautiful sight to behold. For _Return of the Jedi_ it was packed. Unlike my first screening of _A New Hope_ , in which I'd had the good bad luck to sit in the center seat of row one, that seat was already taken for _Jedi_ . I sat in the second balcony with some friends. This also turned out to be good bad luck, but for different reasons. _A year before this movie, in the halls of my High School ..._ It was a few days before graduation. I was a Senior and eager to leave High School behind me. They were having a school assembly for honors students at which Nebraska's Governor was to speak. As I had absolutely nothing to do but sit in the auditorium for the next two hours, I decided to ditch school and go to the Stuart Theater. They'd just installed a bangin' new sound system and were having free screenings of _The Jazz Singer_ . Not the famous first one, the crappy re-make in the 1980s. No, don't react to it. I was walking down the halls clearly headed for the school's main exit when who should be walking towards me but the Principal, two Vice-Principals, and the Governor. I figured my goose was cooked since the Principal and his Vices knew perfectly well where I was supposed to be -- and that wasn't headed toward the main exit. What I'd failed to consider is that the Principal and his Vices admonishing me to get back in the auditorium would be embarrassing for them in front of the Governor. Instead, I got a hello and several dirty looks. But who cares, I was graduating in a few days. What were they going to do, put me in detention? In any case, I got to hear the the Stuart's new sound system, and it was indeed bangin'. _Meanwhile, back at Return of the Jedi ..._ There I was in the second balcony, and my good back luck came courtesy of the Stuart's bangin' new sound system. That orchestra and Maestro Williams' music in a theater that size was _awesome_ . The entire theater shook and vibrated with every note. But the real shocker came with one single line, Jabba's first: " *Bo shudda.* " Holy crap! The bass in that line was so low that the theater simply rumbled. The building itself shook from the bass. It gave Jabba a menacing quality that is gone when you watch it on a stream. " *Bo shudda.* " I'll never forget it.

Part of what made Darth Vader work so well was the *combination* of actors that comprised the role. David Prowse was physically in the suit. The actor whose face we see is Sebastian Shaw. The voice is James Earl Jones. Finally, the breathing/rasping sounds were created by the audio team. While J.E.J. gets all the recognition as the voice, it really took a team to create the iconic role.

For those of us who saw the movies when they were new, this was the first time we saw Jabba. The scene in A New Hope was shot, but with a fat guy in a fur coat. George Lucas had thought about inserting a puppet Jabba in the scene, but he couldn't come up with a design that worked and that he was happy with. And strictly speaking, the scene wasn't really necessary, so he dropped it. When he made the Special Editions in 1997, he restored the scene and made a CGI Jabba. He later improved the CGI rendering for the Blu-ray release, but it was still different from the practical Jabba that always had been in Return of the Jedi.

Going into Ep.1, keep in mind that it takes place before the Empire, so there's no Rebel Alliance and no Emperor yet. The ruling government is the Republic, which has a representative senate made up of delegates from every planet. The leader of the senate is the Supreme Chancellor, kind of like the President or Prime Minister of the whole galaxy. There is no military because there's been peace for a thousand years. Instead, the peace is kept by the Jedi Knights. The Jedi Order serves the Republic but it exists apart from it with its own traditions and rules. Centuries before, the Jedi wiped out their ancient enemies, the Dark Lords of the Sith. However, by the time of Ep.1, the senate has become corrupt and wealthy corporations have a lot of influence in government. One of these is the Trade Federation, who appear to be the main villains of the next movie. But they are secretly in league with a familiar shadowy figure who is pulling the strings from behind the scenes, and whose existence even the Jedi are not aware of. Some of this stuff is not explained very clearly and can pull you out of the movie. You may find it helpful to know some of this stuff going in.

Well, the original trilogy was _first_ released in '77, '80 and '83. I know the originals can be bought off of Amazon (in the US), but otherwise, I don't know if they can still be found, because the originals were touched up and _re-released_ in '97, with the special effects updated. _Episode V,_ though, was _so_ close to what they had in mind that it was hardly changed, so I understand its popularity. I don't think I can fairly assess which is my favorite, though, because the _full_ effect comes from being emotionally invested in Luke but not knowing, until he reveals it himself, that Darth is his father. I don't know that I've ever _had_ such a time in my life because I've grown _up_ with _Star Wars._

They were very popular with children. They even had their own Saturday morning cartoon show here in the states. You could look up the "STAR WARS Holiday Special" if you really want to see more wookies like Chewbacca; but I don't really think anyone should put themselves through that traumatic experience. It's one of the worst things I've ever witnessed and is spoken of with scorn and ridicule by Star Wars fans to this day. Although one interesting thing in it is Luke Skywalker in some weird makeup. At the end, first when Vader was unmasked, and afterward, when the force-ghosts appeared, the original release had actor Sebastian Shaw in the role of Anakin Skywalker. This was of course many years before the prequel films were released. Once those films were made with Haden Christensen in the role as a young adult, the 2004 DVD re-release of Return of the Jedi had some digital changes made to the unmasked Vader. Lucas simply removed his eyebrows and changed his eye color to match Christensen, and when the force-ghosts appeared, Shaw was digitally replaced completely, or at least his face was. Over the years, with the advancement of technology, George Lucas had made quite a few of these adjustments to his films, almost to the point of being criticized by fans. They contended that he was actually changing the films that had been originally released. Many were simply cosmetic enhancements, but in one particular instance, the story was subtly changed. This was in A New Hope, when Han Solo was in the Cantina talking with Greedo. Through some subtle timing, Lucas changed which of the characters fired first under the table. Another much less techno change was the addition of the subtitle to Star Wars. Upon the 1981 re-release, the film was retitled from "Star Wars" to "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope", with the addition also placed at the top of the crawl at the beginning of the film.

Quick clarification: "Jedi" isn't a race, just a title. People who aren't Jedi can still be sensitive to the force and use the force. The Jedi Order were just an order (like monks) who trained in the way of the force and sat as a council of advisors to the Galactic Republic. Some races of creatures were especially sensitive to the force, and others could barely feel it at all (or in the case of droids, couldn't feel it). Luke is a Jedi by VI, but Leia is only force sensitive. More Jedi can be "made" by training and learning under another Jedi.

Dawn, you will have to watch the Prequel Trilogy to see what happened to Darth Vader to put him in that suit. That's the closest to a spoiler I'll give you. Also, from here, you can watch everything chronologically (and that includes re-watching this trilogy, as you will have a new context for how events go. The thing is, with the complete story context, it makes the original trilogy much more tragic. The entire timeline (as of the date of this posting; February 4, 2022) goes like this: Episode I, Episode II, The Clone Wars (animated movie and series), Episode III, The Bad Batch (animated series), Solo, Rebels (animated series), Rogue One, Episodes IV, V, VI, The Mandalorian (live action; seasons 1 and 2), The Book of Boba Fett (Live action), Episodes VII, VIII, IX. I want to mention that there are more series coming this year; "The Bad Batch" season 2, "Andor" (Live action, based on a character from Rogue One), "Kenobi" (Live action, which takes place around the same time frame as Solo), "Ahsoka" (Live action, which we believe takes place between the Book of Boba Fett and Episode VII), and more still in pre-production. The only drawback to The Clone Wars animated show, is that the first 2 seasons are not in chronological order, so you can either watch them in release order, or look up the chronological order on the internet. Everything else is pretty much in the order they should be. Except, of course, the order in which they were released as movies/series. But once the shows begin, the episodes are chronological in nature. Also, the animation gets better as Clone Wars goes along, so don't let that put you off. 22:11 - Neither Vader nor Palpatine knew that Yoda had lived long enough to help in Luke's training. You'll find out why later on, if you keep going. 24:54 - Vader literally needs the suit to survive. I'm only telling you this because we were told it during the course of these movies. Vader had been seriously injured earlier on in his life, so he was forced to live within the "life support" suit that kept him alive. By removing the helmet that allowed him to breathe, his death was imminent. Although, the Force Lightning that he had endured had disabled the suit, so he wouldn't have survived for long anyway. In his dying moments, Anakin Skywalker wanted to see his son with his own eyes, rather than through the helmet.

16:00 "I like them what's there names?" Those are Ewoks, there are two made for TV movies that were made about them that came after this movie was shown in theaters because kids liked them so much. Me and my little sister liked watching them when we were kids. We even had little stuffed animal toys of them. The one princess Leia first met is named Wicket.

You remember the "Luke, I am your father" quote because it's a false collective memory. It's one of the most famous instances of the so called Mandela Effect. Although the correct line is "No, I am your father" it is misquoted most of the times. Another famous exampel is the Disney movie Snow White where the Queen never says "Mirror, mirror on the wall" but "Magic mirror on the wall". Although it does say "Mirror, mirror on the wall" in the Grimm fairy tale (or rather it's translation to English) the movie is based off, so that one is only kind of false.

lol. I have to admit I laughed out loud at one point in the video. The celebration on the planet at the end, with the Ewoks about.."Ah.. that music's awesome." I agree with you! But...... I'm old enough to have seen the film when it first premiered and I can ASSURE you that the music, in the same scene, in that first cut....was BY NO MEANS AWESOME! Changing that particular piece of soundtrack was just one in a myriad of changes Lucas made to the series "on further consideration." If you can find the first cut...take a listen to the "original Ewok party music." It....was...horrific. On this same theme it is common to point out that the original trilogy of Star Wars that you can buy off the shelf today in any store are NOT the original movies as they were made. Which speaks to Lucas's determination to rework the movies, changing soundtracks, inserting (or deleting) scenes, and re releasing the films with a lot of reworks. It's a common complaint and there are many online discussion boards that bemoan the fact, and it is a fact, that it is nearly impossible today to find a copy of the original Star Wars movies as they existed when they were first made and released. Sorry for going on about it, but, its true. What you see today are not the films they once were.

The actor playing Wicket the ewok, the 'teddy bear' that Leia met, was an 11-year-old Warwick Davis. It was his first movie role. He went on to star in the movie Willow six years later. One role I remember seeing him in was an episode of Doctor Who, during the Matt Smith era.

You should watch the clone wars animated series. You'll get all of Anakins backstory + heaps more. Not suggesting this as a reaction as way too many episodes but if your interested in Star Wars its a must. It fleshes out the whole universe and its a good watch too. And the last season especially the last 4 episodes is just unbelievable

The little bear guys are Ewoks. The one Leia meets us played by Warwick Davis. Also, everyone goes on about the Ewoks being too cute, but no one remembers the fact that they planed on eating Luke, Han and Chewie. I've been a Star Wars fan since I was little. The original trilogy (4,5,6) is the best, so hard to pick a favourite out of those three, they're all great for various reasons. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the prequel trilogy. There's lots to love in those too, though there are things that didn't go down so well when they were released. Personally I like them, but not everyone does. Episode 1 is a bit cheesy in places, Episode 2 is a bit slow in the middle but it's worth it for Episode 3, that one's pretty epic. After that.... Solo is ok, Rogue One is great, 7, 8 and 9 have good bits but also dumb bits and aren't as cohesive a trilogy. Clone Wars, Rebels and Bad Batch are all worth watching. The Mandalorian is by far the best of the recent stuff. Also, as a Scot who moved away years ago, I am pure loving watching a Scottish reactor. Your patter makes me homesick, in a good way.

@@ItApproaches Oh yeah, Cad Bane appearing is something I've been hoping for for a while. And yes, it's all interlinked in the same universe. My point though is that ep 5 and 6 had almost everything to do with plotlines from The Mandalorian, and very little (apart from just a few mins in ep 6) to do with Boba's plotlines. So I stand by my statement that The Mandalorian is the best of the recent stuff.

Most people think they're not going to like Star Wars until they watch it. I think allot of this is due to how pop culture kind of freaks out over the films. But when just watching the movies just to watch them, you find out how good the characters and the story really is. Glad you got a chance to see it. Star Wars is a good time.

I love "a new hope" the most. I got to see Empire Strikes back in the theater (first movie I watched.) But things like all the aliens in the first movie, really got me. I would like to specify that I like the original versions over the special editions. The special editions did add some good things. But some of the things that were added didn't quite feel right to me. Anyway, these reactions have been a joy to watch. Thanks for sharing.
