+Jordan Noton Does everything really need to be emotional? Because the prequel trilogy had a entire different plot from the originals, there are many Jedi, they're in their primes, and the basically need no reason to actually show "emotion".
@thejordannoton
8 жыл бұрын
+kar muts Yes, all lightsaber battles have to be emotional in some way. I don't mean emotional as in weepy and sad, I mean an emotional connection to the characters. It's life and death, a battle between light and dark. One wrong move and someone dies. There HAS to be an emotional presence there, otherwise why are they fighting and why should we care? As for the prequel trilogy not needing a 'reason to actually show "emotion"', you couldn't be more wrong. - Obi-Wan versus Maul, the man who just slaughtered his master in front of him. - Anakin/Obi-Wan/Yoda versus Dooku, the man who betrayed the Jedi Order to bring about war (who wounds Obi-Wan and disfigures Anakin) - Anakin vs. Dooku, seeking vengeance for his missing arm and injured master - whilst falling to the influence of the dark side. - The Jedi vs. Sidious, the orchestrator of the Sith return, the enemy hiding in plain sight - which ends in Anakin falling to the dark side. - Yoda vs. Sidious, a last ditch attempt to save the galaxy from Sith rule. - Anakin vs. Obi-Wan, the most important battle in the series. Master vs. apprentice - brother vs. brother/son - the final shot at redemption for Anakin Skywalker. There's so much that should have been emotionally DEVASTATING, from Anakin choking out his own pregnant wife to him being burned, chopped apart and left for dead. NONE of these had the raw emotion of Empire or Return, but Force Awakens did at least in my opinion. It felt like a life-or-death situation. I loved it.

Looking back, it's sad that I didn't stick with it and at least advance to 1 kyū, but on the other hand, a year later I joined the JROTC in my country, met some really great people and right now I'm doing military service. To make the relationship to Kendo is a nice marketing trick. In the movies it looks great, but in reality a Shinai has a Tsuba to protect the hands. The real Katana is so incredible sharp, a light saber on contact even sharper. The missing x-guards in the old light sabers of the first 6 episodes is a clear design flaw. Fighting with light sabers as in Kendo would result in a lot chopped off fingers. Also a light saber would have little mass weight in its laser blade, even much quicker than a light Shinai. They should leave light sabers as in the movies to sci-if, anything else does not really fit.

I love how the saber featured in the intro is the Graflex; not only is it the one saber seen in all three trilogies, but it's the very first one we see in the original Star Wars - the first one in the whole saga. All the lightsaber awesomeness that we associate with the franchise all started with that saber.
@combat-greyhound565
11 ай бұрын
Besides it is the most famous lightsaber hilt in the Saga, there might be a pretty simple reason for that. And that is, that it was the only (current) lightsaber hilt prob Disney had available at the time they made that promo video. Also there is a little correction by that the Graflex in its original form does not appear in the Prequels. Anakins hilt in ROTS, even tho it is inuniverse the same lightsaber, is sligthly different because they milled the hilt completely out of a solid peace of metal instead of using the old camera flashgun.

According to George Lucas, there are millions of planets in the Star Wars Universe. So, the umpteen different styles of lightsaber forms, are congruent with the various different sword fighting systems (here on Earth) that are utilized in Star Wars movies and series. I think it's awesome that Mark Hamill already had some familiarity with Kendo from his years of living in Japan, long before he was ever cast for Star Wars.

Rise of Skywalker got a lot of criticism but IMO it did a great job with the fights/duels. The originals were solid, although New Hope was very slow. Maul vs. Obi Wan and Qui Gon was awesome, but the rest of the prequel fights were too fast, showy, and cartoony for my taste. Episode IX had a cool anime feel. It was mostly weighty, grounded and dangerous feeling - but with limited acrobatics (Rey vs Ren in the waves, Ren’s opening scene) that imbued them with juuust enough superhuman powers, you could understand how either one of them could turn the tide of a battle.

Jo$h The problem with the 7th movie is that Disney executives don't understand what makes a Star Wars movie. It's not about how similar it is to the originals (as we've clearly seen). It's about the the heart and soul of the movie. It should have substance to it. The light saber battles are the exact same way as the rest of the movie. They were made intentionally poorly because that's how it was in the original movies. A lot of people didn't like the fast-paced light saber duels of the prequels NOT BECAUSE they were different, but because they lacked the emotion behind them that the original duels had. (Though I would argue Anakin v Obi-Wan was the most emotional duel of them all). The new movie's duel is still horrible despite being like the original because it lacks the storytelling necessary for us to give a damn about the characters.
@thecapedinventor6422

It's better than the originals except for ONE THING! The prequels were better with choreography, the atmosphere, etc, However! The prequel fights lacked real weight. With the originals, you can truly feel what is at stake with the fights. The original fights just have so much more emotional depth.

It is consistent. Luke too was flying around (and I don't mean when his papa chopped his hand off). Only it wasn't THAT huge, which makes perfect sense because the prequels still have "the perfect Jedi." Luke needed time to learn. That's why I was kind of disappointed when Rey massacred Kylo in Episode 7... without proper training. A guy can stop lasers with his force, but gets beat up by an untrained force sensitive kid? Looks like Disney concentrated on pleasing everyone instead of making a good movie.
