As someone that struggles with books a bit because english isn't my first language so I have a harder time following the reading overall and digesting the information, I easily feel lost, however, these reviews really help me get the whole story simple and straight forward, It just really helps me get the characthers relashionship and the plot easier, Thank you Lauren, your reviews are amazing !

This book was a 7 or 7.5 then jumped to a solid 8 - 8.5 for me once I realized we still get a Cavan Scott novel to finish this phase in Path of Vengeance. Left this book still wanting more stuff with the Mother, so knowing that’s likely coming alleviated some of the problems I had with this one. Two non sequitur thoughts, Yoda is still washed in this era too + Yaddle is so much easier to root for and Gella Notti is basically if Padme was a Jedi.

oh I hadn't thought of that with Gella but that totally makes sense! true about the Mother, it would be helpful to see inside her head and get a better sense of what's driving her in a more specific way. -Lauren

Love your reviews! I think since I had spoilers about Axels betrayal before reading Convergence and Cataclysm I was prepared for the twist and it didn’t bother me so much. He’s definitely POS but I ultimately enjoyed his character arc especially with his mother. I can see how his twist would be jarring if I didn’t have spoilers.

This book is making me more suspicious of Yoda. Especially after first learning of the cover up in Mission to Disaster and Yoda's disappearing act in Phase One only showing up at the very end of Midnight Horizon with a unknown person singing the nameless lullaby and then Yoda summing all the Jedi back to the temple. This may answer why the Jedi act so different in the prequels that led to their doom. I won't be surprised if the Sith appear in the final chapters of the high republic observing all the shit hitting the fan making their takeover of the galaxy easier for them.
@CantinaCast

thats a good theory! its definitely weakening the Jedi Order and Yoda making some questionable decisions is unfortunately part of that... although at this point I think Yoda is still trying to do what he feels is best, unfortunately his interpretation of that can sometimes be hard to get behind 😬-Lauren

@@CantinaCast That is the thing Yoda's intention are good but the phrase the path to hell is built on good intentions perfectly describe Yoda especially in my personal favorite clone arc where he is in the spiritual journey through the force and through the force he discovered the horrible truth about the end of the order and decided not to tell anybody of his vision after Mace ask if he found the answer to end the war.

@@ReaderReborn Yoda is pretty much the reason the Jedi became what they are in the prequel trilogy we'll just just see how that happens in Phase 3, The Acolyte, and whenever the hell they are going to publish that chinese exclusive ebook to the rest of us in English that is set 50 years before The Phantom Menace and just a few years before the events of Dooku: Jedi Lost.

I finally finished Cataclysm last night and just watched your review! :) I personally didn't have a problem with Axel Greylark's arc in this book. I guess I sort of expect a redemption style story for a character like his in the Star Wars universe. Although, my three complaints with Axel: 1) He is fascinating to me, and because of this, I wish his journey was a little longer to the place he finally reaches at the end of this book. In my perfect world, seeing him in phase two and completing his journey of redemption would take a couple of years of content to finally reach. 2.) The number of times readers were supposed to fear for his life felt numerous and I found fatiguing. 3.) This is a pet peeve, but I hate it when we start with a character in a certain place, and by the end, the character is put back right where they started. It just felt like, "let's take him out of this prison box and play with him for a while, and put him back in that same box when we are through." I still love his character though, it just wasn't entirely what I was hoping for. And yes, Gella's obsession with him felt a little out of place considering where we left things at the end of Convergence. Random: I didn't realize that was Axel on the cover! The artist drew his face so differently when compared to the concept art. Oh, and I had the same thought as you about the Closed Fist being the early days of the Nihil! As a whole, I really loved this book and it was my favorite of the adult phase two novels. I found Lydia's writing really fun. I did feel like things got a little bloated three-quarters of the way through, but that is probably just me as I had the same opinion about Rising Storm. I don't know how ANYONE could follow this novel though as an entry point into this series. I also just finished Quest for Planet X today and found myself so utterly bored, my least favorite piece of HR content so far. :( Longest. Comment. Ever. Haha.

Yes, thats such a good point about the length of time of his redemption arc that I hadn't even thought about. But yeah, I bet if it the journey had been a bit longer then it may have been easier for me to get on board with all of his twists and turns! LOL take him out of the prison box 😂 I agree though, I always appreciate seeing a more concrete/physical demonstration of progress being made when we get to the end instead of the character ending up back where they started (even if they have changed, as Axel did). The piece about the closed fist/the nihil is intriguing though so I'm interested to see where that leads! -Lauren

Another fabulous recap, I love these. While the book was satisfying enough, there were too many subplots and death fakeouts/near death moments for me. I think the death fakeouts are a larger Star Wars problem at this point.

thank you!!! & yeah totally fair point, there has to be real consequences and stakes and if we just assume everything is a fakeout the consequences lose their power!! -Lauren

Hey now! Great review as always. However... and I hope you take this as constructive criticism... I'm not sure if it was because you didn't seem to like the book or maybe you were tired? I'm not sure. You had quite a bit of vocal fry through out the video. Some is always natural in the lower register of one's voice. There's normally a smile in your voice and in your eyes if not on your face. Keep up your great work! I'm a fan.
