Grew up in the 80s never saw the show as a teenager found it 40 years later. Was this a local show or nationwide?

It was originally on Superstation TBS in Atlanta for the first few months with Mark Richards as host. When Geoff Edwards took over, the show was syndicated nationwide on the weekends for another year and change. Admittedly you had to know where to find it.

Would the contestants consider themselves "gamers?" Did anyone consider themselves "gamers" back then, or did that term come later?

No, that term came a lot later. Video games were brand new, so it was like any hobby. You'd ask other kids what they liked or were into. So, you'd get responses like, "I like G.I. Joe, comics, and I play video games. We have some arcade machines at the pizzeria, and I have an Atari at home, etc.." What was funny was when Nintendo brought home video games back. Everyone was just like, "Did you get a Nintendo? Do you have a Nintendo? I was playing my Nintendo..." Everything video gaming just turned into "Nintendo". Eventually ir was "what console/system do you have" when Genesis came out. I want to say "Gamer" started somewhere in the mid/late 90s, but I can't even guess where it originated from.

@@WishItWas1984 Was the hobby as obsessed over as it seems today? Was it an accepted hobby at all? Kids, who were into the hobby, were they picked on? How did adults feel about video games, arcades, etc? Looking back at gaming history, it seems like once Nintendo hit big in America, the video game market became more mainstream and consoles just came in like a tidal wave.

It was huge for sure. It was all new and the latest high-tech thing, no matter the era. During the arcade days we were obsessed about getting quarters. Lol But it was never all-consuming like it is today. The Atari era was great, but we had limited games available to play and gaming was just one interest of many. We played with toys, had some handheld/tabletop electronic games, had to watch our cartoons, ride bikes, played outside, etc.. So, it was accepted because it was the new cool thing. Nothing like it ever existed before. Because it was so popular, no one got made fun of for playing video games. Adults in my experience were wary of it. They were wary of TV in general. The screen was going to ruin our eyes, TV and video games were going to rot our brains. We were regularly told to stop playing after a while and go outside. But they couldn't deny the popularity, so it was more about not letting it get out of hand. Nintendo wasn't much different than Atari. It just restarted what we had. Now, with much better technology. The games were just better quality too. Plus, we lost arcades, so it was all we had for video games. Nintendo did definitely pull in more people to make them play games. The quality was just that good, and video games existed for a while by then, so more adults were comfortable with it. All that made Nintendo more universally popular I think. Once newer systems came out, I feel like we all started to realize it would continue and keep getting better.

@@WishItWas1984Oh, yes! Quarters. Fascinating read. I loved all of that, Thank you. Do you still play video games? Any new ones? Do you ever go back and those early games?

@@attackofthetheeyecreatures3472 No problem. Yes, it's been a lifelong hobby. I moved on from console to PC for a long tim, but have gone most back to console as games aren't as different between the platforms as they used to be. It's just more cost-effective to play on a console at 4K on my TV, than keep up the processing power needed on the PC side. I also play quite a bit if VR on the Quest 2. I do still play the old stuff. I have a MAME setup for arcade, a RetroPie, various other vintage electronic games, etc.. I literally just finished Baldur's Gate 3. The old stuff is obviously nostalgic for me, but many games still are fun and while they can't be "finished" like modern games, the challenge is to best your own high score. The only problem with all this is that there's never enough time to play. Lol
