It takes a lot of guts to wade out in the Everglades at night. I went spotting for frogs off Turner River Rd one Friday night and waded out to my knees and the first time a croc or gator I couldn’t see moved real fast and sent a wake up to my waist, I walked on water back to the bank.

Legit, man. Blind gator encounters are some baaaddd juju. I do night drives across south FL going east to west... out in the sticks where there's no light pollution. Out towards Corbett and lake Okeechobee it is just so peaceful. Right north of the glades proper. I just love it out there. I find it extraordinary relaxing. One night, feeling great about everything, I stopped off on Old Connors Road, a long farm road that runs out to the southeast edge of the lake. It's a cool spot because it's so open and you can see a city wayyyy off in the distance in every direction. But the sky is unpolluted so you get all of the stars too. I DID say it's a farm road... so like... it has a sprawling canal network, that connects right to the lake... with a population of over 30,000 gators. There are canals on both sides that come straight from the lake. Do the math. I stopped at one of those tractor depots to take it all in. There aren't good shoulders on that road so the depots are the only places to pull off and safely get out. I hear fish popping everywhere, bullfrogs, crickets. Not a single vehicle on the road. It's great. But THEN, I start to hear bigger croaks getting closer. I tell myself it's just a bullfrog. That works for me until I hear the splash of something huge entering the water on the other side of the road. Like, two men tussling just dragged eachother into the canal and hit the water hard. I remind myself I'm out on gator alley and tune my vigilance up, put my head on a swivel, close my eyes and listen. For another minute, all is well. But I'm not feeling so calm. Another minute passes before I hear the deepest, loudest roar I've ever heard almost directly behind me. It vibrated my chest! And then hissing. I turn around look right across this two-lane road to find that a yyyyuuuuugggeee bull has cleared a 12 foot embankment, and is sauntering towards me in a charging stance. That's when the dude bellows again, this time even louder. They sound like big cats and it is so much more intimidating to hear it like THAT. If you didn't see/know, you'd think a tiger was chasing you by the sound. I was never so happy to be standing right next to my car that night. I wonder how many more were all around me that I just couldn't see in the pitch blackness. I wasn't scared about that in the moment, but I sure am now! I'm generally good with gators. I live right by the south fork of the St Lucie, so we got neighborhood gators. I kayak with congregations of them frequently, literally been around them my whole life. But I can't think of anything more terrifying than knowing one is near and not being able to see it... during peak mating season no less. And knowing that it definitely sees you. Also, you're absolutely MAD for wading at night like that lol.
