I just remembered/ realised, when fast travel was introduced in TES IV everyone was upset. Because it makes the player interact with the world less and it is un-immersive. Some people kept repeating, including Bethesda, that you don't have to use it, it isn't forced on you. Well, with Starfield they finally did it. You don't even really need it for travelling. Find loot? No point. There's next to no unique items. Go exploring? Why? There's nothing worth finding outside of the cities. POI are all copy paste down to enemy placement and items. Build an outpost? Why? It's easier to just buy resources from vendors and there's no real point to amassing resources anyway as upgrading is shockingly bad. Go and find more Space Powers? Why? It's boring, tedious and the powers are useless. Every single aspect of this game just gets worse the longer you spend with it. It's a shame. the point where Starfield died for me, and I went from "yeah it's got plenty of flaws, but I'm having more fun than I thought I would" to "this game is horseshit and I wish Steam still allowed refunds after 50 hours" was when I went on a radiant bounty hunt for Freestar and found myself in the exact dungeon I had just cleared to earn the Mantis gear and ship- layout, clutter, dead bodies, audio logs, the whole shebang- but on a completely different star system. They literally just copy-pasted the dungeon. And then another run after that, I got another dungeon that I remembered running with Sarah a handful of hours prior... again, in a completely different star system. So many dungeons are just copy-pasted and that, combined with the completely lacking basebuilding system, really made the cracks show and I realized that Starfield basically just half-asses every system from every Bethesda game that came before it. They got each part right once before, but they couldn't be bothered to even *try* this time, leaving it to modders to fix everything. Ain't no way in hell I'm buying Elder Scrolls 6 now.

The point you made about stumbling upon something interesting is exactly one of the main issue with the game: it feel empty. Personally, i love the idea of a bethesda game with procedurally generated planets and space exploration, but what they delivered missed the point so much that actually make me question what the hell did they do during development... For this game to be good it would need to have something interesting to find going around and the system they have is, on paper, good, but the amount of unique point of interest is not enough for the scale of the game or they are not presented well enough for the player to find them. I for example didn't know that the 3 dots means that there is something in the planet, i will look around more knowing that, but still, it feels empty (and i know it's space, but other games managed to make space feels not empty without filling it with point of interest). I think that this game have basically almost every systems half baked, and this is the reason why there is no coesion in everything.

All this translates to core business questions related to organizational performance. How can an organization innovate and produce products with the utmost quality? Some signs show that the company wants to keep selling what it already has and make it another success. This approach depleted the organization of its core competencies, and over time, it will either reinvent itself (painful decisions starting by the CEO) or shrink and then collapse. What drives organizations to become in such a state is beyond our post but is somehow related to acquisitions and the upper corporate culture.

There is an example of a game that you can play wrong, I played the Remake of RE2 and hated it, because I didn't have ammo most of the time and died over and over and so on. Then I vented to my buddy and he was like "so yeah, you know that you shouldn't kill every zombie, right?" and I was surprised, because in the other RE games I always did (I played Resident Evil 4 (OG), 5, 6, Revelations 1+2, while RE4 OG I played dozens of times). So I did a new playthrough, avoided killing most zombies and just outmanouvered them and I drowned in ammo. So basically you can play the game wrong in the sense that you don't play in the spirit of the game.

There are some valid critisisms here. But i simply disagree that if all you want to do is explore and find something new or interesting you have to follow the quest markers. Thats not true. There are unique POIs on planets that don't show up as markers on the map at all. If fact you can totally miss them if that is all you are looking for. Are they around every corner? No. But they aren't in past Bethesda games either. The mechanics used for exploration in this game are much different than their previous games. And I realize its a quite a jarring change. It certainly was for me. In their past games, there is quite a lot of traversing into inbetween landscapes where there is nothing going on until you get to the next interesting thing. But if you simply follow explicit quest markers or POI markers on the map, you will miss content in this game.

Dear Lord... The Outpost storage is some kind of f'ing joke... I hope I'm just missing something. I had stuff stockpiled in my New Atlantis apartment, but after a major plot point in the main story, that gives reason to build an outpost, I went to collect these resources. Only to find the place completely empty, everything gone. Luckily I had my previous days Exit save, so I just lost a couple of hours progress. I decided to build the outpost preemptively. 1sq m chests hold 150kg, Your pockets hold 260kg, a ship container can hold up to 1200kg?? How much can a 30sq m Outpost container hold? 75kg... I need 40 of these to hold what's on my ship & my pockets (3000kg / units) Yes, I know with skills and research, yada yada...The box I can build at the start, holds twice as much as the Outpost storage containers. Were these chests made by Doctor Who??!! Supposedly you can also link these containers so you can place items in one, and it'll fill the rest. I can't seem to get this to function, perhaps you need to reload the area. Automatic Snapping... Did no one... NO ONE at Bethesda test this?? All containers snap to each other, on 2 sides only. They auto-snap from 10 feet (3m) away. There's no toggle. It is possible to make rows next to each other, in the most cumbersome manner imaginable. Make row 1. Now start row 2, away from row 1, try to line it up, and work backwards to where you actually want the containers. Did I mention, you need to start rows at the highest point? Yep, if the ground rises, you cannot continue building due to collision. Again, this is because of auto-snap. Think about all the things in Bethesda games Modders fix. It makes me truly question the skills and talent of Bethesda's workforce. Look at your avatar's hair... Look at NPC's bulging eyeballs... I've been a fan of Bethesda since; "Wake up. We're here. Why are you shaking?" But seriously, how can individual modders make bigger improvements within days, than your 400 employee studio in 6 years. No Man's Sky is a better game. Yes, they've had 7 years of FREE DLC. But their studio has 25 employees.

not one of the worst games ever made, but by bethesda standards it's shit, there just isn't enough in there to be fun. It reminds me of something nostalgia critic says, when your enjoying a movie, your more willing to overlook and not notice the glaring issues, but when a movie is boring those same issues are front and center. The story/bugs were never great to begin with, but the gameplay, exploration made you not really care about it. But in starfield when it's like 10 mins combat, then 5-10 mins of load screens and dialogue it is noticable. Then really REALLY noticiable when I'm not finding the urge to go, "Ohhh whtas over there." and explore between missions. I beat the lst 1/3 of the game last night in one sitting and without that lets go explore and have fun, the issues really hit home again. Only really enjoyable part was a mission they ripped off from titan fall 2, but still has the bethesda issue of bad quest markers and confusing layout of buildings.

I don't necessarily take issue with planets with little or no habitation, but the number of planets could have easily been reduced with little impact given that most are copies. There are two things that can happen for a game that took 25 years to plan and 8 years to develop. 1. The game is gonna be well thought out and well developed; a game that is cohesive, competent and might as well be one of the best games ever made. 2. The game is gonna be a disjointed mess with ideas that don't gel well with each other cause for Todd and team, "It just works". Starfield took that amount of time to get made yet is a mish-mash of other elements from the games they had been developing during the game's time in the oven. Which begs the question: How much of that 8 years of active development was actually focused through and through? It's tough to see Bethesda go down this route but they really need to understand now that their design philosophy no longer holds up well in this generation of games.

They moved from a cohesive and smooth transition style of game play to a boring, time consuming, fish bowl and injecting a load screen simulator then added a running simulator to that. This alienated their own core demographic! We had good AI back in 2005-2007 and 2009 with FEAR and FEAR2 thats 14 - 18years ago!!! And No One has been able to replicate that since! I dont understand how programmers or developers cannot figure out how to do AI. We have games like No Mans Sky and Star Citizen that atleast have a seamless transition why cant Bethesda a AAA Game Studio figure out a Seamless transition

One of the fundamental problems with Starfield is that your character progression of XP levels, skill points, and Starborn powers is in direct conflict with the progression of your gear, weapons, suits, ships, outposts, etc. The game clearly is designed for you to progress into NG+ and beyond. There is even an Achievement for getting your character to level 100. However, NONE of the physical stuff you spent dozens of hours collecting, crafting, and upgrading carries over. This is a horrendous gameplay decision for Bethesda, because some of the best parts of Starfield are the "looter/shooter" aspects, the ship-building, and the base-building. All of the time, energy, and resources the player invests into those core gameplay mechanics are completely destroyed when they go into NG+. And to reiterate, the game clearly WANTS the player to go to NG+ as continuation of the main story, and progressing more Star powers.

Hell, right off the bat, the "Starborn" storyline gets more and more nonsensical the deeper you get into it and the more you discover. It's not even the notion of "more questions than answers", but that the answers you do get contradict themselves up one side and down the other.

I definitely agree with most of all of these. I am enjoying the game, but there is just so much it's missing. I see beating games once and never touching again. That is sad to me because I definitely was excited about this, but I will just go back to Fallout 4 and skyrim, which, even with its issues, especially on console, they are still great games.

I was right in the middle of a skyrim high when the game released. I played sf through game pass for about 6 hours before i was kind of over it. Running around a giant empty town trying to find a shop to sell my crap at, with no way of knowing where anything was and slowly going around in circles was the killer for me. The game lacking just basic features like town maps and npc reactions made me feel like i was play testing an unfinished project someone had slapped together in unreal engine. I installed fallout4 the other day and surpassed my starfield play time before i got up to piss.

I still have the crimson fleet quest to do, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I could make a list like this with things I think you missed, but I am so bored with it why bother. I have moved on as have most. I have noticed a sharp trend in my drop off time playing bgs games. Each feel more unloved and soulless than the last.

After playing around 100 hours of this game since early release day, its made me appreciate what Chris Roberts is doing for Star Citizen. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Starfield but man did they miss so much opportunities with this game. As you said, its a blank canvas for modders to take over. I like mods but in my view, mods should be made to enhance the game. Not fill in for stuff that wasn't done due to "design decisions."

Starfield is the closest example of living in a world where AI makes everything for us, including games. Boring, Uninspired, Lazy, without meaning, predictable cheap content in exchange of limitless possibilities and imagination of human mind. Okay or perhaps average at best, but nothing that gets you off your chair, nothing to make you feel anything significant. No memories made. This is why AI generative content will die and procedural generation is just an old cousin of its future self, exactly because of those points. It only shows the careless direction, the fact nobody in the lead roles of Bethesda now appreciates creativity anymore. I will always be more interested in hand crafted worlds, stories, art because i know there was a mind and meaning behind them. Something one can grasp and relate to, get motivated and inspired by. Instead of just getting a fast food among content that anyone will forget in 1 day. Bethesda feeding majority of the assets to procedural generation really nails this approach in the worst example imaginable. I wouldn't be surprised if they used AI to generate the dialogue given how shallow and meaningless it is. It is as if ChatGPT had a field day, while us humans just sit in awe from how degenerate the industry has become. It is even more disappointing knowing they did achieve amazing things in the past so it is not like they cannot do good things, despite their shortcomings and mistakes, Elder Scrolls were wonderfully crafted games, even with the infamous bugs and exploits, it still had a charm and soul. Meanwhile Starfield goes absolutely backwards, like what happened? Speechless. Thanks for covering it! Good points all around.

The modding community made previous Bethesda games enjoyable for me. The base was good but the mods made it for me as much as it could. Starfield has to be thought of as a good start more so then a stand alone. The base isn't great, barely good.i am excited to see mods for console and can't wait to make starfield for me. I would like Bethesda work out a way for modders to monetize their mods. I'd pay 5$ for a good mod maybe 10$ for a great mod. A big thank you too all the modders out there for that. Look forward to what you guys make. Great video, keep it up.

Wait, with my first 300 hours of game play, I just hop around to random planets and mostly scanned planets, or do some quests from random on planets without those 3 dots. Yes, some planets without the dots will spawn random npc settlements, be it a tracker camp wanting help to kill a target or some people who wants to return to a not so remote place. Yes, higher level planets tend to have less random settlements, but they still exist. A few of the ships I stole are from "civilians" that landed on these said settlements, I don't even have to kill anyone, the ships are empty and just have to lockpick it. I was already level 70+ when I started and completed the faction quest, I still need to finish the Crimson Fleet one and the main quest. Yeah, the game is clunky and not seamless in connecting combat, space combat and and so on, and this is my first Bethesda game I have and the only rpg game I really played after Witcher 3. So, I'm really not grasping the issues with the game. I played Eve Onlne and Elite Dangerous and I'm fine with cutscenes. That's how docking and undocking from space stations in Eve is, and although you can manually do in on Elite, I still prefer to have the auto docking module for my ships. Similar to Witcher 3, as long as you have explored a place, you can fast travel back and forth. Especially when heading to Skellega, which you have to go by ship initially.

I think the reason i can push through FO4 but not starfield is this: In FO4 i can overlook the bad writing/dialogue and narrative, the railroading on questlines simply because i am free to go where i want and just wander the wasteland and encounter things. In starfield the writing, companions and dialogue is worse but i cant just wander a large area discovering things the same way thay i did in FO4. Bethesdas exploration is damaged greatly because of this and the lack of that exporative feeling in starfield just leaves me with nothing else to stay engaged with. I also hate what they did with player progression. The perk system is such a letdown. I want FNV and FO3 style player progression. Starfield has such a lack of build diversity and just the way basic game mechanics are locked to perks makes rhe pacing feel bad. I shouldnt need to unlock perks and have a build specified to crafting or upgrading. Craftint and upgrading should be a basic game mechanic and there are plenty of other perks i feel the same way about. Its like there was no creativity to builds in this game...

100 hours, finished the main story and a lot of the side stuff. i was pulling my hair out because there was no ship or base building guide. i had to go outside the game to youtube to find it out and even then i never built a single outpost, it was literally pointless and shipbuilding is pointless too because all your cargo goes with you in whatever ship you decide to fly so your big cargo hauler with 5000kg of space, when you switch over to your 200kg capacity light "fighter" style ship to go hunt down some space pirates...all 5000kg comes with you and makes your lighter fighter unflyable

This was a great review and i agree with most of your points Especially the idea of there being far less solar systems, the game literally gives you a lore explanation of why that would make more sense (each major faction only allowed power in 3 systems each) I dont mind there being cutscenes, or not being able to manually travel several lightyears in real time, but plotting my journey shouldnt just feel like a fast travel menu (with a warcrime of a star-map) with more cutscenes, all for at most a 5% chance of this new solar system to even have a single point of interest, let alone one that isnt a copy pasted dungeon i havent seen already in the last 5 systems And they also make really poor use of loading/cutscenes, like the docking sequence is just a 15 second loading screen without anything even loading

I enjoyed Starfield initially and put about 90 hours into the game - then it started to unravel a bit for me. When realising that all the time and money I was investing in ships and decorating apartments was pretty much pointless as it would all be wiped for NG plus. With the high concept ship builds, its kind of pointless too other than walking around and admiring your own work. For apartments, you can't invite people there, or host anything, or interact with anything you build and they have absolutely zero impact on the game or what you can do - all style no substance there. The fairly short story mode is so repetitive - doing the exact same thing to gain another power is lazy. I hate the fact there's no minimap for the cities either and you have to memorise where all the shops are. My biggest gripe is that the companions force you to do a clean cut playthrough and will turn on you if you so much as lay a finger on anybody who is not a 'pirate' or declared enemy. There should have been at least one 'dark' constellation member - it was hinted that would be Andrea initially but she reacts in the same as way the others. The relationship lines with Sarah, post marriage, are so cringeworthy too and are almost purposefully a parody. The most enjoyable part of the game for me was the faction side quests - Vanguard, Ryugin industires, Freestar collective. Like many it seems, I got absorbed in the game intiially and then stopped and never went back - after Phantom Liberty released, it was game over for me. After 100 hour plus fresh playthrough of Cyberpunk, I can't go back to Starfield - minus the ship building and apartment decoration, Cyberpunk is superior in nearly everyway in my opinion.

I think it's wrong to compare Starfield with Fallout 4, Fallout 3, or skyrim. This is a totally different game, and just like Skyrim has its pluses and just like the Fallout games have their pluses, this game has its pluses, too. I know I'm in awe at the size, and I look forward to each day to explore more of it. Sure, it has its bugs, but so did the other Bethesda games, which were fixed just as these bugs will be.

The UI alone was enough to turn me off of it. I don't know how Bethesda continues to make their UIs worse with every game. Morrowind's was early and rudimentary, but concise and simple enough to function. Oblivion's was pretty decent. Nothing special, nothing awful. The Fallout games were ugly but functional. Skyrim's is hot garbage. Fallout 76's UI was a clusterfuck How is it possible for Starfield to have a worse UI than any of the above? It may be the worst UI I've seen since the Ultima games. Arguably worse. How does anybody open Starfield's character menu and not immediately Alt-F4 the fuck out?

Bethesda has been around for more than 30 years. In 2/3 of that time, they have used the NetImmerse/Gamebryo/Creation/Creation 2 engine. They have used nothing else since 2000. That's 23 years of unfamiliarity with any other engine. That lack of familiarity with any other engine has left them rigid... inflexible. Either the Creation engine just isn't suited to open world exploration or Bethesda doesn't have the talent pool that can design games that aren't just boxes strung together with loading screens. Bethesda has always defended their choice of engine, but given how similar (nearly identical) all of their games look, it's either a result of bad project direction or bad tools. If Bethesda chooses to say it's not the engine... well, that only leaves one other option. It's Todd himself holding the company back.
