Comparing your results with results that Gamers Nexus got, it seems like Starfield is unexpectedly CPU intensive. Even at 1440p native, the 4090/7900 XTX/7900 XT were still CPU bound. It takes full 4K native to start to get out of being CPU bound. Day 1 headaches plus Bethesda goofiness. I'd love to see some revisits over the coming weeks as GPU vendors and Bethesda rollout optimizations and drivers, just to see how big of an impact poor optimization is actually having on new games. And I do think it's fair to say that Starfield is poorly optimized, certainly at this point on literal minus 5 days to release.

Important lesson to everyone is that CPU bottlenecks can happen even with sub-90% CPU utilization. In fact in some of my testing on other games I've seen CPU bottlenecks with even sub-50% utilization. So when you look for your bottleneck, don't just automatically assume your CPU is not the cause if it's not reaching 100% utilization.
@performancefirst1119

I'm happy that someone finally said this in response to one of DO's videos. Props. The issue is that despite how many threads a CPU has, only about 8 of them are going to be fully utilized by most games. I'm CPU bottlenecked in a number of games at ~30% usage, sometimes less. Having more threads can help, but generally 12 fast threads is all you need to run games. Look at CPU scaling gaming benchmarks, they will corroborate this.

Genuinely curious, how can one tell if they’re CPU bottlenecked without high CPU utilization? I do understand that overall CPU utilization takes into account the number of threads (so if only 1/2 of the available threads are being utilized, you will have roughly 50% utilization), so this doesn’t tell the entire story. Do we then look at individual core utilization?
@performancefirst1119
Жыл бұрын
@@StolenJoker84 You look at GPU utilization. Generally, your CPU and/or memory is holding back your GPU if it is not at >/=95% utilization. This will depend on your GPU, resolution and game settings, but some games have engine limitations so that could also be the culprit. CPUs are complex, and even looking at per thread usage won't tell you the whole story. Instructions per clock, core-to-core latency, core bandwidth, core clocks, cache latency, memory latency, memory bandwidth, and interconnect/fabric clocks all impact/limit CPU performance. A usage chart is never going to tell you which single, or combination of those CPU characteristics is holding back your GPU.

Since all these POS games are Unreal, you should know that you can run the `stat unit` command in the console with the tilde key. This will show generally which threads are taking a shit. A high "Game" time is an indication of poorly optimized code + Blueprint abuse, lots of actors ticking that probably don't need to, all kinds of unecessary things like thousands of overlap checks when some shit moves, etc. A high "Draw" time is an indication that the CPU is chugging trying to communicate with the GPU, and since this is UE5 and I doubt these "devs" even touch engine code it's probably all sending draw calls with a single thread. Also the 3D-Vcache is telling that the code in general does a lot of pointer chasing/things are very separated, accessing data and instructions at random. In most CPUs this can kill your performance since the CPU cannot pre-fetch memory or predict memory access, but with the 3D-Vcache is basically brute-forcing it's way through the problem. All these "devs" that probably don't know the first thing about CS are just abusing all the UE5 features they can get to shit out a game. You are literally paying for their incompetence with the unnecessary hardware requirements to play the game.

Like many other modern games, this one can utilize only up to 8 cores. And 8 cores here are marginally faster than 6. If you tune RAM, 5600X would give you 60+ fps experience. And large cache will probably add another 10% fps. So with 56(8)00X3D you will get 70+ fps in this game.

I would LOVE it if you'd be so kind and repeating this with the 7900XT/XTX. Several people are reporting that the kernel thread of the Nvidia driver is acting up and running higher than normal CPU load (Nvidia's driver CPU load is always higher than AMD's, but people are reporting that it is going a but nuts - which probably is tied into the "why does Ultra act up?" thing).

you dont want this game optimized, it uses Bethesdas creation engine, which has issues at higher frame rates, in past bethesda games even 60 fps has had issues, for example if your framerate is high enough you just can't play skyrim, the intro will bug out and softlock, this is the same engine under the hood just very updated, but those high FPS issues are 100% still a thing, honestly I'd be willing to bet the performance of the game is on purpose, Bethesda wants to no longer be known for having a shit ton of bugs, and high FPS + creation engine = bugs

As long as the frame rate is fairly consistent, that shouldn't be seen as a major problem, especially if your graphics card can't actually get much higher than that even with a super high-end CPU anyway. It's also possible that your RAM is holding you back. The 5600 and 5600X still seem to be pretty solid in this game as long as your RAM is good enough, and Daniel was actually benching this game with somewhat slow RAM when he was using the 5600X. He was using 3600 CL18 RAM, but you should definitely be aiming for 3600 CL16 or 3200 CL14, and most RAM kits which can achieve either of those settings combos can probably achieve the other as well.
