Regarding drinking: For a society which spends a great deal of time in vacuum environments, some means of bringing fluids into a vacuum suit would be a necessity. In Real Life, US Army gas masks have a built-in valved drinking straw which connects to a valved port in the lid of a standard issue canteen bottle, so that soldiers under gas attack can safely drink fluids. i would expect a similar system to be developed by a spacefaring society. Probably a standard-format bayonet-plug which can connect to a matching receptable on a sealed container and provide both positive pressure to the container and a tube for the suit wearer to drink from.

When you see one body and a bunch of dead it is *totally* possible that they were in a fighting retreat and that was the one guy who wasn't able to fall back in time. If they are underwater creatures, the sister's eye looking things could be a type of sensory organ for water use. Maybe the sisters do the location and direct the swarmlings, they get the prey and take it back to the queen. To those thinking "I wish we could go into their lair and fight them", well, that lair is likely literally beneath an enormous subterranean ocean, and by all accounts, the drill exploded when it broke through the bedrock separating it from the creature's lair. As a result, that lair is flooded, filled with water at extreme pressures too strong for a spacesuit (Designed for lack of atmospheric pressure, not overabundance). Besides, that lair is likely empty, since that flood would have destroyed it, causing the swarm. Think about it: The underwater ocean is devoid of life, and these creatures swarmed to the surface instead of heading into the water. There's no indication they're amphibious, so when the drill broke into their home, they had nowhere else to go but up. And so they did, and like ants that had their anthill stepped on, they immediately attacked anything nearby. With their lair destroyed and likely no other life on the surface, these creatures attacked and ate the only food source available, the crew of the rig. In a very real way, this was as much a horror story for the swarm as it was for the crew of the rig. Imagine, you're chilling in your home and suddenly a drill breaks through your ceiling and your home is flooding with freezing water. Your only way out is to climb the drill before you drown, so you do along with as many others as can make it. But then the horror really starts. As soon as you reach the surface, you're in an incomprehensible place where nothing makes sense, surrounded by screaming monsters that shoot pain and death at you. Scared, injured, in pain, you and your fellow survivors fight back and eventually overcome these monstrous invaders and try to get your bearings in your new home. Then... it comes. A strange thing from the sky, and out from it comes one or two more monsters. They're much stronger than the others, and they begin wiping out your people with almost contemptuous ease compared to the creatures you just killed. Within minutes, everyone you've ever known is dead and you're about to join them. To them, the player is like a fusion of Jason, the Predator, and the Terminator. An evil demon from beyond that brings nothing but death in its wake. To them, you are the monster of this horror movie.

@@thenthapple it’s part of Barrett’s personal quest, if you go to the Haephestus Mines to try and gather evidence that his husband was framed. I reckon they’re just a re-used model, boss - they’re called “pests” or something by the scanner, so don’t worry about it - it’s Bethesda’s shenanigans again, I’d say. You only meet the little guys, but there’s research there that talks about how they consume their dead and grow bigger, becoming “hive queens” of the colony and whatnot. I think it’s on Gagarin, from memory? I still say it’s just a reskin of the model though - but it might be worth checking out if you’re interested? Maybe they’re linked somehow? I may well not have found all the evidence about them after all, I mean: I was looking for dirt on haephestus, so I could’ve missed something, easy. They were there though. My guess is that those orange things are actually eggs rather than eyes. The swarm sisters/mother are similar, they could be elders or like with ants a different caste, the breeding caste. As you said, given their origin, eyes don't make much sense and their odd placement would also be a negative sign for them as eyes. A reproductive organ in this case wouldn't need to have a similar organ present on the swarmlings.

To make head canon that explains procedural generation, we dont really know how long this place has been abandoned. The two variants ive found of this place have both been on below freezing planets so these people could have been dead for years. Too often we gamers will rush through a scenario and not smell the roses because we are either rushing or too focused on defense to pay attention to the roses. But every event in this game has a story. And odds are it didn't have a happy ending for anybody. it is refreshing to see somebody take the time to look at a event and treat it like a crime scene. To break it down to describe the events in the order in which they happened. Like a body surrounded by multiple first aid kits. Yeah .... call it a panic reaction if you will but that is probably the most logical thinking person in the room who decided that the best chance of personal survival was to screw over everybody else and snag each first aid kit as they came across them as they fled.

I'm completely missing the point of going throught these places besides leveling my character (but at that point I might as just customize a face and have a bar increase with increasing numbers under it to the side) whenever I leave these perceptions in my subconscious. Thanks for bringing them into the light!

These quests always rely heavily on environmental storytelling. It's easy to fly through the map, shooting anything that moves and looting everything that isn't nailed down, but you'll miss a lot.

Yeah I think I’m the place where the video is about I think I blitzkrieged through it at lvl 15 lol I didn’t realize there was a story until later on I realized most these places have a story

I am sure this was supposed to spawn on ocean worlds only, possibly be part of a questline that was cut but they decided this was too good to not use. Maybe in future dlc we will see it sorted out, but as of right now I’ve had three of these pop for me and I’m not even NG+ yet.

It was an interesting thing to find, I had a hard target that made quick work of the swarmlings. One shot for most of them. Having a bit more of a boss fight would have been fun

Bruh, this was a short, but deadly encounter. It's as close as we get to horror in this game. But there's more encounters like this one. Always stay stocked up on ammo and explosives. Space Magick will be super useful as well. I've died so fast even at level 40+ because it's a literal swarm. Loving it

First place I went after completing the tutorial xenoweapons research facility on Kreet. I was convinced Starfield was going to be a horror game for a while. Then I levelled up some and had to turn the difficulty up because of how ineffective the enemies were 😂

Yeah I’d see that and then dip lol. I ran into something even more terrifying in the Schrodinger system. Some derelict massive asf ship. Literally boarded and then realize I’m in some nightmare fuel

I am pretty sure these creatures are transported around to different worlds by eggs you can find and even sell! I found a huge number of them on the same planet as the Clone colonists although no swarm sisters or mothers. But they do hunt in packs and seem to go after anything that moves! You can find random caves on different planets even on Earth where their secretions are all over them sometimes with dead people outside of them but tools for unearthing the caves present inside and out.

I came around a corner and ran into a couple of these and ran as fast as I could outside. I came up with a technique to exterminate the aliens but it took forever and I was apprehensive the entire time.

Funny enough, in my playthrough i can walk around without a spacesuit and the bodies have only jackets and their faces look frozen.

The 1st time I came across this platform, none of the swarmlings were anywhere to be seen. So I went through the building, wondering why everyone was dead and disappointed that there were no slates or pc entries that gave a clue about what happened until I went our one the upper deck and all of the swamlings were there 😱

Say what you want about Starfield, but the abundance of interesting fauna/creatures is pretty awesome. The "weirdness" of them, is very reminiscent of Oblivion and Morrowwind.. which makes sense. Also, the Swarmlings reminded me of John Carpente's The Thing.. or at the very least, the Theatrical Version. Admittedly, it's been decades since I watched it though. Edit Fixed grammar

I wonder if The Colander ship is connected to this event? Since the smaller one matches the one on the ship.

This really cements that Bethesda needed more time to tune the rng location placements in this game. I found this place on Triton (Neptune's Moon). It has no atmosphere.. and no gravity (however researchers do believe Triton may have an underground ocean). I go to the rig and there's coffee cups outside.. the main building doesn't have an airlock.. for all intents and purposes, the abandoned mining rig was designed for a HABITABLE planet. Its clear that Bethesda didn't do anything to filter out planets where this shit would make no sense.. I mean, it'd probably be easy to do. Just tell the RNG algorithm.. if 02 = 0 then abandoned mining rig spawn chance = false. Literally two lines of code to prevent something like this, and they didn't do it. I really like what Starfield's potential brings, I do.. but the RNG copy-paste crap really kills exploration for me. This game goes out of its way to break immersion.. it just needed more time.

Someone missed a rather interesting detail... in the little building on the corner of the deck you encounter the mother is a xenowarfare tech case. It's a mining operation, that case does not belong there at all, if there would be contraband a miner or management brought to the platform it would be aurora rather than xenowarfare tech which would be used to turn local wildlife into human killing death machines. The Swarm are human killing death machines, there's a xenowarfare tech case... dots connecting. Another quest line has you discover that a colony was destroyed as part of a xenowarfare test(vague for spoilers). This looks like for all intents and purposes a xenowarfare test with the case left as evidence. And there's a derelict ship floating around a planet with a swarmling in it that one of the crew called an interloper. Possibly connected? Possibly an unfinished questline? Or just a large easter egg?

I find the swarmlings very similar to a movie called Pitch Black. Those creatures were mostly dormant till there was a lunar eclipse

so....there is a ship i found in space, not sure where as it was in my first playthrough, that had a female nesting and laying eggs inside it, and had killed the entire crew. Suspense was built up as you progress through the enormous derelict ship wondering what happened. I had the "Sense Star Stuff" Star born power , and could see a gigantic alien form within the ship waiting for me to reach it's lair. Very chilling. I'm wondering if one of these is what killed them, after it broke out if it's scientific specimen cage. looked exactly like it.
