StarForge was your typical garbage open world early access crafting survival game that got hyped up because the trend of garbage open world early access crafting survival games didn't exist at the time. So I guess you could say that this game was a trend-setter? I would however like to point out that using store bought assets isn't automatically a bad thing. Empyrion for example uses a ton of assets from the Unity store and it's actually an amazing game.

Despite being one of those burned by StarForge (I bought it when it hit steam) I'm glad it happened. You couldn't be more right when you said 'it's a monument for early access abuse" - I think a game like this was bound to happen, something too hyped up, with extreme feature creep and abusive developers just everything that could go wrong all in one game. It's games like StarForge that encouraged steam to stop inflows of cheap and terrible games littering their store. The consumer market is now far more cautious with early access games. Developers both genuine and dickish can learn from this game and see what went wrong - it'll teach good developers to not feature creep; while at the same time it teaches developers after a quick buck that the market for cheating/scamming a community isn't a successful one. A StarForged was always doomed to happen. I'm glad it happened relatively early (even if it's only within the last few years we've truly seen its total fallout) so that hopefully we'll never see anything quite on the same scale of fuckery in the early access games industry again.

It's pretty ironic some of the No Man's Sky comparisons made in this video, given how that game has been continuously worked on by the developer to make it actually live up to the expectations once put on it, while this game was long abandoned and never came back into use. To be fair to No Man's Sky when comparing this to what it was like on it's initial release though, at least it was functional amd had some kind of base game. It might have gotten boring pretty quick and lacked many expected features, but at least you could notice some effort was used in putting it together.

KZitem decided to recommend this to me years later. StarForge was a game I bought in early access and I had several posts on the steam forums in which I explained the process of how to fix a crippling bug with the game where in the single player would never launch from the main menu for some people. The devs pinned my posts and then washed their hands of the issue, never actually fixing the problem and instead relying on what was then my amateur understanding of coding and basic design to limp their game along. I use to feel horrible about supporting the game because I'd have people sending me messages on steam, asking for my help to try and get the game working. Even with the fixes I found it just flat out still didn't work for some people. Once I realized the game was a scam I told anyone and everyone who would listen. I was later banned from the reign of kings forum because I said I was one of the most vocal supporters of star forge and that we had all been scammed. Adding that RoK was never going to be finished and would be abandoned.

I remember seeing this in its really early days. I DL'd a free trial of it. It didn't work, I thought the framerate was just my computer being shit (may have been). I am... so, so sad to see it end this way. I could have been great.

I was wondering where I saw that wacky physics before. Reign of kings was great though

I got burned by this game, now it forever sits in my steam library as a monument to my sins.

Would love to see a video on Reign of Kings, CodeHatch's game after Starforge. Probably not as long a video.

Yo Mandalore! looks like Code Hatch are doing a new game that follows, what I'm assuming, is literally the same curse rune formula of this garbage. The game is called Heat. It's advertised on steam so if you get a chance, take a gander at it.

I remember playing the alpha back in 2011 or somthing, which at the time I though was pretty cool. Then I forgot about it until 2022 when this video showed up in my recommendations. It seemed really cool back then, even with its janky physics based movement, and in the back of my mind I expected it to be revolutionary when it came out.

What's the game at 0:17? Pretty sure the Yogscast did a video on it when it was in early access or something years ago, but I can't recall its name.

Haha i love your cursed runes concept, i hope that catches on. So true, a lot of people with big ideas (which we all already have btw) but not the proven know how to pull it off. I'm a game dev and I've wanted to make a cursed runes game since I was a kid, a couple actually, its everyones dream game, right? But people dont realize the idea to do that has no value, it's the ability to pull it off that people should be throwing fund money at. You need to have a working prototype with all the core features, bugs ironed out, and polished, and then ask for funding to add content and ADDITIONAL features to THAT after you've already proved the important and difficult stuff is 100% done and working as needed. It's the difference between your typical crowd funder and actual business investors, crowd funders don't seem to think about the business proving itself first. I'll make a cursed runes game one day. I'll pull it off. Might even call it Cursed Runes haha ;).

Thanks for the vid.. I actually own this pos and I agree with you. It's concept was great and I believe it can be a good game if the right people were working on it. The team just didn't have the know how to do it and didn't know how to deal with any issue that came up.... I'm also a regular MWO player, I've played Republic Commando, BF 2142, and E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy. I subbed bc you have too many videos I wanna see now. Keep up the good work. ~Impy
