If this video was taken in 1993, then Starker was 69 years old. Nobody plays as good as he did at such age, not Rostropovich, or Fournier, or Piatigorsky, not even Yo-Yo Ma, maybe if Feuermann could live long enough......

Yi Xin Except maybe Lynn Harrell. I saw Lynn Harrell play Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations back in September (2014) and he's 71. He was phenomenal...absolutely flawless with youthful energy. That being said, Starker was probably one of the most skilled cellists that ever lived.

Watch the Harvey Shapiro videos from the Cello Academy. He was in his 90's and still extraordinary. And listen to the CD of his live performance in Japan- he was either in his 80's or 90's. And all of this after years of painful arthritis which forced him to relearn his technique. He was a great artist with a superb mastery of the instrument's sonorities.

I don't see the point in comparing the playing of such great cellists 'at a particular age'. They were great. Starker was great. Slava was great. I studied with both of them, I heard them play (endlessly) up close. Great.

I’ve been listening to, and watching Starker play the cello for almost 50 years. His ease of execution is still amazing to me.

One may not agree with some of the interpretative decisions, but the exercises for the physical preparation of the body are valuable.
