I am releasing today the result of what has likely been the biggest adventure of my life yet. I crossed the world to land in New-Zealand for a month and road-tripped my way from south to north. I drove 5000 km throughout Kiwiland to find some of the most pristine, untouched, unlight-polluted, and unpopular landmarks the country has to offer.
This 7-minute long movie is a timelapse compilation, which regroups the best shots out of 100+ sequences (1 Terabyte of photos in total). The trip was both absolutely mind-blowing, smooth and very challenging at times. You can try to plan as much as you like, the field always finds ways to surprise you. Many areas have become light polluted and increasing human activity / mis-education about the usage of light at night have created hurdles in the filming and editing of a lot of the night sequences.
Despite that, I am extremely happy with the result and I can't believe I have achieved to take almost all the shots I had in mind before coming, including a rarely seen timelapse of glow-worms in the rainforest with the milky way shining above. I'm also very satisfied with shots like Tasman lake and its glacial waters with icebergs floating around above the milky way, or the milky way over the Wai-o-tapu mud pools, and also the small ponds of lake Tekapo freezing over over night. I love the general feel of the movie and I believe I was able to transcribe the general feel and sounds of how I experienced it (Of course, it's always much better in person!). I have to be honest though, I was extremely lucky with the weather as well, as it had been storm after storm for almost 2 months prior to that (so we've heard from locals).
I will be releasing a longer version later on. All the behind-the-scenes with locations, gear, set-up (...) will only be available for my paying members over on Buy Me A Coffee (buymeacoffee.c...)
I want to thank Yacopo Carrara of Polar Night Studio for B-roll photography and support throughout the journey. I also want to thank Sky-Watcher Australia for their kind donation of a Sky-Adventurer Pro 2i star tracker, with which some of these sequences were made. Finally, I want to thank Chester Hall-Fernandez and the Mount John observatory for being able to have a VIP tour of the telescopes and give me a good idea of how Kiwis have contributed to world-famous astronomical discoveries. I hope I made them proud with this tribute to the New-Zealand night sky.
I hope you enjoy the film as much as I enjoyed shooting and editing it. Don't forget to subscribe, like and comment! Thanks for watching.
