Yesssss you put all my thoughts on this perfectly lol. I think it’s ok. But I read mostly fantasy. This was nominated as a fantasy book on Goodreads… this is definitely what I picture a YA romance.

Ooof this has no business being in the fantasy category LOL

I know I am in the minority here but I loved it! I even gave it 5 stars. To each his own! Don’t hate on me!

No hate here! I love that you had a 5 star book! 😊 Glad you enjoyed! And also I don't think you're in the minority, I know a lot of people like it a lot!

Amazing. loved the way of explanation. Simple and easy to comprehend.

I agree. I’m tired of first person and, personally, present tense. I DNF’d about 7% into the book. I couldn’t stand how long it was taking to get into the story. I thought this would be horror, and I wasn’t getting that impression from the constant talk about living in a motel and working at Tractor Supply.

I love that opening oh god I'm exhausted just thinking of reviewing this book! Does sound very YA. I luv ur Emmy in the background!

Except the prose that I didn’t find bloated, I totally agree with all points that you made here. I am going to refer to this video instead of writing my own review on goodreads 😁

Thank you for this! I'm almost halfway and really considering DNFing it. I feel like nothing has happened at all! And I just got to the first semi-romance scene... but it honestly came out of nowhere. Before this I feel like the main character had shown no interest in the male character. And I am surprised by the Goodreads ratings!

This was one of few experiences with not caring about the characters for me. I didn't hate it, but i definitely had to force myself to keep picking it up. I also missed the atmosphere that i thought would be there. This was my first book by her as well.

Thank you , I loved the idea and the cover and was so excited to read it. Needless to say I had to force myself to finish it, I was bored and confused.

And side note, it’s definitely not a haunted house. The house takes care of whoever takes care of it.

I’m around halfway through and started looking at reviews to see if anyone else was feeling exhausted by this book. I was not expecting romance from the cover-I was hoping for a good haunted house story! It’s slow moving so far and I find Opal pretty annoying as a narrator.

I gave it 3⭐️ and I thought that was generous. However it did get a lot of good reviews on Goodreads. So it obviously did appeal to many. I did think her prose was well written but the whole story I felt just dragged and was difficult to follow for me in places. I think the atmosphere was good but it wasn’t enough for me.

I'm also tired of self-aware modern first person perspective. I think it's been done enough and there needs to be a swing back to third person that 'shows' and not 'tells' every little thing. Thank you for the review, I will not be picking the book up.

I completely agree. Mu biggest letdown of 2023. Her book Ten thousand doors of January was INCREDIBLE. Favorite of all time. They are not comparable to each other at all!!

That is good to know! I'm still interested in picking up her other works, especially Ten Doors, but ya this one was a miss

Good review. I didn't hate this as much as you, but it also isn't my favorite book by Harrow either. I do think you should try The Once and Future Witches as it's a completely different writing style. I haven't read Doors of January, but I hear that that one is good too. I would skip A Spindle Splintered and A Mirror Mended as they're sort of snarky fairytale retellings with that modern protagonist voice that you mentioned.

Ooo good info on her other books! This book is far from the worst thing I've ever read, but I was just never engaged or invested at all. I think that contemporary low fantasy is a genre I should stay from, it never works for me :/

It read very YA to me, other than the sex scene. I became pretty bored with it about 3/4 through.
