people usually dismiss the "monster" upon 1st viewing as not that menacing in this episode without noticing thats actually the point. its supposed to be a methaphor for mental illness = invisible to all that dont see it and therefore dismissed as not real

Many people say, that this is a weak episode and how "BS a monster you cant see" is.... My first impulse was to critise the people for not getting the bigger picture. However... i must say, i feel happy for this people, because not getting the episode or not getting the monster.... it means, they cant see the monster Everyone who cant see the monster / concept, feel happy

The museum curator, played by Bill Nighy, had a strange look after having been hugged by Vincent, almost as if he recognized him. I feel that it may be a nod to the second movie of the Underworld franchise, in which both Nighy and Tony Curren (Vincent) had roles, and even interacted with each other.

The big lesson of this episode is about depression. Some times you can't save people with it, but that doesn't mean it's not worth trying to make their life better while it lasts.

Oh here's the big one. This of course is the second episode in series 5 to openly explore mental health, this episode even offering a helpline at the end of the original broadcast. Previously I opened up a little about my own struggles so I see no point in hiding this episode is very import and personal to me as well, though there are other layers to that that will still go unsaid. I really love this whole episode, not just the exploration Vincent's own depression which of course is very obviously wonderful and frankly beautiful, but the way the whole episode ties into that theme. The invisible monster that isn't deliberately trying to hurt anyone, just blinding and unconsciously causing pain, but born out of abandonment and loneliness. Then Amy's own experience being paralleled with depression as she struggles with a pain and loss she can't quite place, but just constantly sits with her even if she doesn't let is show or often even acknowledge it. I really love it. Personally a contender for the best episode of the show. It's really beautiful. "To use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world" ... oh dang it I was managing not to cry

Van Gogh’s mental health issues made him a social pariah. I’m sure that played a big part in why his art wasn’t appreciated at the time. No one would want to be thought of as an admirer of a “mad man” in those times. As I understand it Nighy is a big fan of Van Gogh and the description he gives is something he came up with himself.

I remember once suggesting this episode to a friend who was a fan of Van Gogh. (Who worked in television here in Chile.) He watched the episode and said, with tears in his eyes, "That is what television can do!" "I wish we could make TV shows like this in Chile!" "A show that children can watch, that can talk about such important topics..." I love how you also saw that in your reaction. This is a special episode, with great performances, but what makes it stand out is the way it starts the kind of conversations that we need to have, but don't always find comfortable. Thanks for your reaction to this episode. D

This is such a special episode. The Rory references, the "invisible" monster that is depression, Tony Curran (Van Gogh), the Scottishness and Gingerness! And of course, written by Richard Curtiss who has written some of the best British romcom's. Karen Gillan's (Amy) dad got her a print of the sunflowers with "To Amy, Vincent" on it for her birthday, matching the one from the show. She has it hanging in her living room as her pride and joy art piece.

Sorry, I'm late today, but what a great episode, right? That's certainly a new classic for Doctor Who nowdays and it's the episode that made every Whovian feels a little more sophisticated since from that moment on they most likely became fans of Vincent's work. The acting was superb and it was a great choice of music too! This episode is one of my favorites from this season and I also have a great appreciation for it considering the show as a whole. @@ReactandRamble are you kidding me? You can be as late as you want! I hope everything is alright with you and your family, your dad especially, tho. That's something beautiful about stories and fiction in general, the way we can learn through someone else's eyes and gain a new type of appreciation, not just for characters in a TV show or movie, but real life people that before you might not know or care about that much. It's an awesome thing. I just learned about Vincent through history books back in, I don't know, high school or something... Never thought too much of it, and then I watched this episode and it really touched me and I just think that's awesome. Oh, you're not the only one, you weren't the first and I bet you won't be the last... That moment in the gallery was incredible! Thank you for your hard work making these videos, responding comments and just being the nicest human being ever, I adore you for that! I think it's something you don't have to do, I mean, I left a comment in pretty much every Doctor Who video and will soon leave a bunch of comments in the What If...? reactions as well, and yet, you took the time to answer pretty much all of them. It's not even an answer for the sake of answering, you took your time to read everything and respond all of it properly when you could just say something generic like "oh, thank you for commenting! I hope to see you again in the next video" or something in that sense, but no! You don't do that, you've always been incredibly lovely and I absolutely appreciate you for it and I can't say that enough.

My favourite episode of this season. I wept buckets in the last couple of scenes when l first saw it and I still do on a rewatch. Tony Curran is brilliant as Van Gogh - l have seen him in other TV shows and films but for me this is the best thing he has done. The monster does seem to be an analogy for Van Gogh's inner demons - the issue of mental health is sensitively handled and the messages are positive without being preachy - quite something for a show like Doctor Who. As someone who has suffered from quite severe depression - though never to the extent of Van Gogh - l can really appreciate this episode. It was written by Richard Curtis of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually fame. Bill Nighy is in real life a bit of a Van Gogh expert and does consider him the greatest artist so his eulogy at the end is really from the heart (and I suspect he closely collaborated with Richard Curtis for the scene). A great reaction as always.

I have been rewatching the last couple of scenes now too, it has to be one of my favourite moments in all of Doctor Who so far! He really is excellent as Van Gogh.😊 Agreed, they did it in a nuanced way that kept it interesting to watch for both adults and kids, and I'm so glad it wasn't preachy because I don't think it would have had as much of an impact. Let me preface this, that I was born and partially raised in Wiesbaden Germany and it was a train ride in the mid 80's to go from my location to Paris France, where I stepped into some of the greatest museums to grace this big blue ball.. On one of our school trips, I sat in the Vincent Van Gogh and not being an artist, but someone born to be an Engineer, the wave of emotion that rolled over a 9 year old boy was something I could not explain then and lack the words to... until this "100 word or less speech" This episode broke me, up until the end it was a wonderful tale of my most favorite not just artist, but person to grace this Earth, but the ending.... this ending with speech, Vincent crying and apologizing for the roughness of his beard, the doctor hugging Amy the way he did, the way I assume someone like Keanu Reeves would hug a person in this predicament and telling her about good and bad, not cancelling each other, but making each one more pliable. Thank you Doctor Who, thank you for putting words that I did not have to an emotion, that I could not quantify. Some shows are special and they give us moments of joy and grief, but when you find one that gives meaning to what you could not yourself understand it's meaning.... it is a thing of beauty. This is why to this day, when it is time for me to embark on any type of journey, whether it be educational, physical or emotional, it will always start with a simple Geronimo!!!!!!
