The new camera makes a MASSIVE difference!! People securely underestimate how much the camera does for a game’s feel. It’s one of the absolute most impactful elements!
@JoshuaBarretto
Ай бұрын
Agreed! That so many early 3D games had a fixed angle camera is unfortunate. One of the things that made SM64 so groundbreaking was the dynamism of its movement, and the camera was a big part of that. It's important to me that I replicate that same feeling here.
@Arcad3n
Ай бұрын
@@JoshuaBarretto Yeah! And the way the camera zooms and shakes during special animations like opening key doors or dying is still so uniquely high quality to this day. It’s wild that Nintendo’s first n64 game set the bar so high.

@elio7610

@@JoshuaBarretto the problem is that the player's control over mario's movement is relative to the current camera angle, so if the camera angle changes then mario starts changing direction too. this can be very annoying when the camera automatically and unexpectedly changes angle while the player is navigating a dangerous area. this can be solved either be having mario's (or any other character) movement direction instead tied to something other than the camera angle or by the camera angle only change when the player makes it change. it is not necessarily something to worry about in this project since this project is mostly just replicating the original SM64 experience rather than improving it or anything but i am just saying. i actually found this problem more noticeable in Gex: Enter the Gecko than SM64 but it is an issue in both.

This comment 100% on the mark. Sonic 1, 2, 3 are better games with widescreen, purely better and that’s completely true. My favorite cameras in video game history are the pikmin 1, 2, 3, and 4 cameras. They are freeing and forgiving yet limited, very elegant

@@Mrcoconutgun I'm not really sure what you mean by 'proper' here
@Mrcoconutgun
4 күн бұрын
@@JoshuaBarretto I'm referring to 32 bit consoles of the 90s, namely the playstation one and sega saturn. They're able to render basic 3d models, the gba on the other hand is not capable of that. I've always thought of the gba as an upgraded super nintendo (16 bit console) in terms of graphical capability. The nintendo ds is much more of a "proper" 32 bit handheld than the gba. No hate on the gba though! It was my first handheld, and some of my fondest gaming memories are with it.
@JoshuaBarretto
4 күн бұрын
@@Mrcoconutgun But the fact that they're 32-bit doesn't really have anything to do with their ability to render 3D graphics. Sure, it might *help* if you can manipulate a fractional value in a single register, but it's perfectly possible to write 3D games without that. The difference between the DS and the GBA is primarily that the DS has hardware support for polygon rendering, but again: nothing to do with the side of the registers.
