The thing always say about this one is that it is a fun space war flick, but never should have been named or associated with Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Verhoeven famously did not read the book, reportedly giving up after a few pages when he either found it boring, or did not like the politics, or both. For one big thing, the book centers on the mobile infantry being in powered armor suits that made each trooper capable of taking on thousands of bugs, so the infantry combat shown in the movie is quite frankly stupid and borderline hilarious. But since Verhoeven made no effort to understand the source material, any deeper commentary or satire pretty much falls flat...it is a fun and silly space warfare flick. I liked your commentary, and while I might not go as far as to say that this is a :"great" movie, I would say that the biggest part of it that I did not like is that it was named/associated with Heinlein's book...so separate from that it is a really good movie.👍😁

Spot on brudnick. Robert Heinlein's fiction writing has been twisted in all directions through the prism of modern politics and profit alike. I'm pretty sure Verhoeven is what Robert's book refers to as a bug. Unfortunately, that concept flew clean over his head in this film. Disappointing.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’m a normie when it comes to the book so I’m coming from a place of “accepting it as it is”. But since you mention power armour, I may have to change that. Now I’m thinking that’s where Fallout drew its inspiration from. I see this film as great for its silliness. It’s just fun, especially in a group watch, and the k*lls probably wouldn’t be as tongue-in-cheek if badass space marines were taken out by the bugs while wearing power armour. It’ll probably be a bit more sad and serious, because the playing field would be slightly more levelled, which I wouldn’t mind someday. But for now, this is what we’ve got. Hope you stick around for more. 👍🏻👍🏻

@@thisisfunhouseentertainment I definitely agree with you about the accepting what this movie is part...I know lots of folks who do not get caught up in the political aspects of the film, and see it as a fun action sci fi movie...so you are in very good company. Even I can enjoy it that way when I am in the right mood...maybe with some cannabis products in there to make it even more fun. LOL

@@iKvetch558 With some cannabis products in me, watching Battlefield Earth, I'm LMAO. Astute observation from you and Fun House. Similar to Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek series, Heinlein used speculative fiction in an alternate universe for commenting on contemporary society. His critics have labeled this as social propaganda, but on one level or another, that label fits most any film with a moral story. To be fair, Robert's powerful new sci-fi sub-genera was challenging social norms on multiple fronts. This came at a time of deep fears about communism spreading to the West. Ironic that independent thought and free expression became dangerous, and institutionalized social conformity was the cultural fabric that would hold us together. Clearly, my wife uses the same fabric to hold authoritarian control over everything in the bathroom. I've been defending against that ideology spreading to the garage, but without NATO support, it's a losing battle.

@@thisisfunhouseentertainment There's actually surprisingly little action in the book. There's one op in the cold open when Roughnecks are ordered to raze a skinnies' outpost, but try to avoid casualties as a way of telling the aliens to stay out of it. Then there's the drop on Klendathu that goes bad, and the general in charge dies leading a suicide counterattack as a diversion to allow the rest of his forces to extract, and Operation Royalty to capture the brain, but about half the book is explaining the philosophy, and ideology of the Federation. If Verhoven bothered to read it, he'd know the UCF is a polar opposite of fascism, but instead he decided it was a "bar, right-wing book", and gave it to Neumeyer to read it, and tell him how it ends. As a result, he missed all the important stuff, and even his attempt at making the film a satire fails spectacularly, because he didn't realize that the UCF is opposite of what he thought he was satirizing.
