Ive got tears in my eyes remembering Saturday nights at 9pm on BBC1 and settling down with my family at 11yrs old. When it was finished it was 9.50pm, and raced up the stairs to bed the way Starsky did in the first season credits. I rolled off to sleep happy with dreams,of a butter-creamed sandwich filling stripe, and ripe red tomato bread car skidding down the streets of Bay City. With me at the wheel of course!😂❤

I've just played all four in succession, and Series 2 is utterly and completely the best, most memorable and sums up the two characters, and the whole series in one memorable guitar riff. I have forgotten the other three already, they just don't stick in my head, but I can still remember Series 2 from forty years ago. Memorable and perfect.
@scvandy3129

Whoever the musicians are on drums and piano are two talented, VERY lucky guys (or gals) -- who nail it. They add so much to this and year two's killer versions. "Treasure Hunter UK," I'm with you -- year 2 is tops, by far, then 4. "1 & 3?" "I'll pass." Bluntly, they do nothing for me. In fact, I can't wait for the damn main title from 1 and 3 to get over; whereas with 2 and 4 I could listen AND watch the main title on a loop. Interestingly, for a show that only ran four seasons "Starsky and Hutch" had a distinct score for each. Resulting in everyone here getting to put forth a vote and reasoning for one of the quartet to be their favorite. And be mature and understanding and accepting of those who choose otherwise. 'Targets Without a Badge,' the March 1979 three-parter that sets up the close, the series' finale, for two episodes held for May sweeps, brings to mind a memory where ABC edited the three, hour-long shows into a special, extended "Sunday Night Movie". Yet on IMDB there are three separate, consecutive airdates for each chapter of 'Targets Without a Badge.' At the top of the 'movie' I recall the ABC network's distinctive-voiced, on-air promos announcer, Ernie ("The LLOOOVVVVE Boat") Anderson introduced it as a special event. AND the sound engineer pumped up the volume on the oh-so-catchy theme. Sweet. 11db11, thanks for sharing these visual and audio treats.

@G.C. Dodd We all know It's a variation of the season 2 theme. But the point is it was brought back to some extent because the season 2 theme is what the fans at the time liked best. The producers were inundated with angry fan mail when they switched from the season 2 theme to the season 3 theme. Conversely, the switch from the season 1 to season 2 was met with great enthusiasm.

Season 1 has a dramatic theme to the tune by the great Lalo Schifrin. The 2nd season theme was more in keeping with the funky '70s street music of the time just before the disco era. But then Season 3 ruined it for all of us before they brought back the Season 2 with a less funky imitation version...

Season 4 was a tame version of season 2 but was nevertheless great to have returned due to its popularity. Would be interesting to know if there were other theme tunes considered during test run compositions

The significant thing that sets apart this excellent "Starsky and Hutch" main title sights-and-sounds from the preceding three seasons' variations is that, while we're enjoying the viewing and listening experience to the max, we're also feeling melancholy knowing we're closing in on the end of the series' run. My guess is that executive producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg would have liked the show to reach a fifth season, thereby making it more valuable in its off-network afterlife, i.e., syndication. 115 shows, the equivalent of a healthy five-year run, results in fewer repeats as the local stations 'strip' the property, in Monday through Friday airings, than with four seasons' 92 hours. If that be so, then either year four's ratings tanked or the two stars' enthusiasm waned to the degree they begged out of their five-year contacts. A helpful criticism to our wonderful host, 11db11, I will wager most "Starsky and Hutch" fans would prefer to see it presented in its true, 4x3 aspect ratio, the way it was filmed and the way it was broadcast -- not this phony attempt at widescreen where portions of the frame are eliminated.

Now that over a thousand have voted 'Thumbs Up' and nearly 200 shared Comments about the main titles' themes and David Soul ruining his back when jumping onto the car's roof, I'll throw in 'my two cents' about a few more visuals. 0:24 - 0:30 LOVE the bit of 'business' with the leopard-skin bra-attired dancer having Hutch's UNDIVIDED attention . . . to the degree that Starsky good-naturedly blows a blast of air in his partner's ear; IMMEDIATELY followed by the clip of the two attired in 1930s gangster garb and the nicely-endowed, pretty brunette in the blue blouse's eye contact with Starsky letting him know she's all his, for the asking; Hutch oblivious while he's throwing dice. 0:38 - 0:41 disco is the rage as Starsky observes the couple dancing; 1:02 - 1:04 David Soul's Hutch's WTF expression as Starsky BURSTS the cart through the door looks 100% genuine. Now, piggy-backing on others' general comments re the series: David Soul has clearly aged in this relatively short span of the series' run; Hutch's year 4 face looks noticeably older. Elsewhere we've learned that back pain from performing the stunt of Hutch jumping onto the car's hood in the pilot persists. The paint job on the Gran Torino is so 'out there,' so bold and unique, that in the medium-sized, California community of Bay City it won't take long for every hood in town to shout 'fuzz!' [i.e., 'police!'] when they spot the sharp, hot-looking, muscle car. "Thank you, 11db11, for this 'ride' down Memory Lane."

A different intro each season as they evolve from early 70s dystopian crime drama to late 70s disco cheesiness. Coming into the 70s, perpetual third place network, ABC was known for edgy adult fare, but by the late 70s ABC had evolved it's brand into a family friendly network with Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy leading the way.

1979 oh what joy. Jim callaghan lost the election and we got saddled with the Conservatives for 18 bloody years.

That-a-boy, "Steve Hillier," go ahead and spoil a KZitem thread where hundreds of individuals have joyfully commented on their nostalgic recollections and fondnesses for a hit, American cop show from the 1970s, "Starsky and Hutch," AND its AMAZING music and visuals in the main titles -- by bringing up your personal beef with politics of the era in your tiny spot in the world. You realize of course all those people from ALL OVER THE WORLD Commenting and Replying have THEIR own likes and dislikes in the sordid world of politics in their regions, yet they had the self discipline, consideration for others and INVALUABLE common sense in knowing a "Starsky and Hutch" main titles clip on KZitem was just about the last place to impose one's views with hundreds of total strangers who just happen to really like "Starsky and Hutch" and '70s TV themes. Your Facebook home page would get much better acceptance and traction for your two sentences.

👍 Composed by Tim Follin. He did a superb job with loads of quality versions. He did far more than just a straight copy.

Weakest of the the 4, tame rework of the 2. 0:20 is a great clip of the duo, though.
