Make your own brown sugar by adding molasses to white sugar. Lasts longer and is cheaper in the long haul. Also, for Texans we gotta have tea on that list 🤠😉...AND WHERES THE BEEF?! If you like Cajun food try Tony Chachere's box mixes. Gumbo and Jamalaya are both good ( I can make from scratch but don't want to) Made gumbo last night I added *sausage, shrimp and okra. Husband went back for seconds. Also I keep Knorr Noodle packs. Alfredo Broccoli Cheese is good, add some fresh or frozen broccoli just makes it better. They are a lot better if you cook on the stove versus the microwave. *On the stove you can add sausage in pot first and get a little sear before you add water and mix.

“as happy as a clam” is derived from the full phrase “happy as a clam at high water” where “high water” means the tidal waves. The phrase means very happy and content with what a person has. Clams are collected during the low tide. So, during the high tides, the clams are safe from the fishermen. The phrase can be used when a person is in a safe zone and has what he/she needs.

Pink Himalayan salt has way too much tin in it. We use Real Salt for most salting, with some Celtic and French grey mixed in here and there. (I understand that’s not feasible for a lot of people but iodized table salt is not good for most of us, and I don’t have health insurance, so food is my medicine.) I'm in the UK and thought this looked expensive - I priced it out at a supermarket here (ASDA as it's owned by Walmart) and it comes to £22.84 (26.30 USD) minus the grits because you can't get them here and with some size differences due to metric Vs Imperial (I got more flour, pepper etc as the packs were bigger!). I know things like avocados etc are way cheaper there than here due to the climate but didn't realise how big the differences can be!
@erinlikesacornishpasty4703

When my family lived in the UK we NEVER got avocados. Now they are on regular rotation in my house, although they are still pricey. I had to recreate my fajitas from the tiny "taco" section at Tescos, and it wasn't great. I found that my "staple spices" in the UK were actually more herbs, which is traditional. But I really only had meat, eggs, milk, some bread (depending on the week and how good it looked), yogurt, muesli, honey, veg, fruit, and a very occasional scone mix with raspberries or blueberries mixed in. I never made my own baked goods, although I do now that I'm back in the States, because we were in a shared university kitchen and didn't have many pots and pans. We shopped most often at Tesco, which we found to be comparable in price (if we used thier coupon schemes) to our local grocery store back home. We had to ride the metro to get to Asda, so we only went there once and it wasn't worth it. We sometimes dipped into Waitrose for something special if we absolutely HAD to. But we got the best values at Tesco.

I think it's important (especially for new cooks) to have some idea of what they'd like to make and eat before buying. For example, basmati rice is probably the most delicious rice, but it makes lousy fried rice (at least when using cold, cooked rice) and you can't make sushi with it. (And I agree about the seasoned salt: It contains all the good things in life--salt, sugar, paprika, onion, garlic, and MSG--and it improves so many dishes. It's a must-have in anyone's pantry unless they can't consume salty foods, in which case a salt-free all-purpose seasoning mix is essential for making food less bland. In Canada, there's an amazing vegetable bouillon powder by Cyrches which contains no salt and is low in sodium and is very good as an all-purpose seasoning; it's kinda like Vegeta but without the salt.)
@debiwillis9045
2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if they have something similar in the states? Ours are so full of sodium
@Olive_O_Sudden
2 жыл бұрын
@@debiwillis9045 Usually, available food options in the U.S. are far more varied and of a greater number than in Canada, as you have ten times our population. But Poulet Dore Inc., the maker of Cyrches, is a very small manufacturer in Quebec, and I couldn't find any online retailers who will ship to the U.S., not even Amazon Canada. There are plenty of no-salt seasoning blends in shakers available in the U.S., as well as some low-sodium "cooking" seasonings like Tony's Cajun, but if I'm reading your comment right, you're looking for a low-sodium powdered vegetable bouillon. The closest thing I can find online is Knorr Ultimate Low Sodium Vegetable Base, which appears only to be sold in 1-pound containers and only in cases of 6 or 12. If you go to unileverfoodsolutions(dot)us, click on 'buy it now' to see ordering options. But I suspect you could probably find something very similar at your local health food store. And if you can only find low- or no-salt bouillon cubes, you can crush or dissolve them in a bit of hot water, put the resulting liquid in a container to keep in your refrigerator, and use that 'liquid concentrate' as your all-purpose seasoning.🙂 Edited to Add: The website 'thespruceeats' has a recipe for DIY 'Sodium-Free and MSG-Free Vegeta Seasoning' that sounds pretty dandy, although it is rather labour-intensive, and if bell peppers aren't in season where you are, it could end up a bit on the expensive side.

If this was aimed at someone just moving out on their own or a college student, I think in a lot of cases their budget would be bare bones. So things like oil and flour, they would probably benefit from buying the cheapest option regardless if it is the "healthiest option available". Just starting a pantry of universal items to use can add up quickly. There is time later to focus on healthier options when income is a little more relaxed. But I think when just starting out, you have to stretch your budget the best you can.

Still love that bread of yours and over the last years I have been using this recepie about 3 times a week and I almost never buy bread; my suggestions: use half a teaspoon of yeast, that is enough; ad 2 tablespoons of rolled oats or oatmeal, that keeps the moisture; you don't need to let it rest if you don't have time, I just form it with a little flour when the time comes and put it in the baking dish. Still works.

My essential oil to cook with is avocado oil because it has good fats like olive oil but it also has a higher burn point that olive oil. I generally only use olive oil for salad dressings, especially when making bean salad or quinoa salad or Greek pasta salad. I buy my olive oil from my local health food store. It's not expensive and it's organic and 1st cold pressed. My avocado oil I get at Costco and I buy the Chosen Foods 100% non gmo. I buy my spices and flour at my local health food store. Her prices are comparable or cheaper than the grocery store and they are always fresh and the baking soda and powder are aluminum free. The flour is organic unbleached all purpose and it's 3 dollars for 5 pounds. I would love to check out Thrive Market but unfortunately they don't deliver to Canada.

A very weird pantry hack is checking out Christmas Tree Shops! They have full size containers of herbs and spices for only a dollar each. When I first moved on my own, with a combination of CTS and bargain finds, I spent about $40 and had a stocked pantry for the things I was making at the time.

I'm a medium salsa girl, can we still be friends? 😂 Brown rice is where it's at! Also way prefer the "fresh-ay pepper" to the pre-ground.

Thanks for videos like this! It really helps if people are on a real true budget. Great items for 1$ or less don't always gotta buy name brand.. I slowed down on going to the DT for somethings , found it cheaper to shop at Walmart & DG. #SavingPennies

$75 for a jacket at Walmart is indeed nuts. I'm over the rising cost of living. It's just making me mad now.

Great "First Pantry" list! *When I do eat grits, they need to be cheesy. Plop some shrimp on them and I wouldn't be sad! 😋 I agree with adding peanut butter and jelly. Or at least peanut butter and crackers. Another would be potatoes. Sooo many possibilities!

my local walmart (I'm in Canada) has no malt o meal, no cream of wheat, and definitely no grits. I've watched another lady's budget hauls (Julia Pacheco) and the price in which she can find 20ct flour, and 60ct corn tortillas is incredible! I love the ideas and suggestion these sorts of videos gives me, but boy- does it ever highlight the huge differences in availability as well as price. Another youtuber (Jeni's scratch made kitchen) was talking about buying freshly roasted anchos in store where she is (AZ), or having a local latino market- I definitely do not have one of those. Jealous! hah. no access to Thrive market up here, or Azure Standard either. Or virginia's Sharp Shopper.

The thrive market that I’ve used before to order from gave you options besides organic. Not all of us are into organic, especially since I can’t prove that they are organic. I have Thrive life products and they’re OK but I don’t like the fact that I can’t see proof that they are organic. To me organic means smaller packages with higher prices. This organic only option is not budget friendly to me.

Thrive online market has way more than just organic. I just didn’t find the pricing all that great. There were just too many products I could get cheaper at a grocery store and I really don’t feel like doing a bunch of price matching steps all the time. I’m sure it works for a lot of people.

We used to say Aldi & Lidl were the "cheapest" grocery stores around where I live. Not anymore, not since they started charging €1.69 for half a dozen (free range) eggs. Insane. Used to be 99cts, I mean, come on! 70cts more that's like the price for a dozen, almost!

Half a dozen eggs in my Swiss supermarket: lowest 3.51$ up to 6.06$. 99 cts is an unbelievably low price...

@@corinneportmann326 99cts is history though and what made Aldi, Aldi. That's been since about last year. Aldi is no longer a cheap supermarket!

My dollar tree doesn't have anything like yours. They also changed a bunch of stuff. Can't find the pretzels anymore, only small bags of chips for $1.25. the only thing I'm finding that's worth deal is some of the holiday decorations and some spices :/
