I have been having electrical problems and this was one of the first things that I replaced; then diodes, more recently starter. I remember when I bought the solenoid the clerk "matched it up" but didn't use a multimeter. I still have the old one and will compare it. Excellent video, Thanks.

I always knew that there were different solenoids ,mainly 3 and 4 post. Recently I had a call to work on an older ONAN getset from 1975. Right away I knew the solenoid was bad but luckily I used my ohm meter after removal and noticed differences than say a Ford solenoid. Your video was very informative! Thanks you for your knowledge!!

I actually learned alot. I came for something else but now i know why my old onan generator will just shut down after a few hours running, then start again after it cools down. Sounds like the previous owner, my grandpa, installed the wrong solonoid for low oil shutdown.

Wow! Incredible! They look exactly the same. That's the difference between a Technician and a parts replacer. Thank you Sir for passing us your awesome knowledge. Will you do a video on using a multi meter?

My friend had a well drilling rig. Great place for kids to play when no one was there to shoo them away ! Battery always dead ! I put a 12 volt constant duty "relay" that switched all control voltage in the truck . Iginition switch operated the "relay" so the entire electrical system was dead unless ignition switch was on .

Yup a 12 volt solenoid with a 4 ohm coil would draw about 3 amperes and if used as cont. service, it will burn out, whereas a 12 v relay would be 12 or more ohms. I rebuilt on of these. drilled out rivets wire brushed armature and contacts, new spring, there was an oil wick, so I oiled it, Solenoid used to send power to a 12 v gen used as a stating motor for a BS 9hp engine.

Working with these since the 70's, Luckily I never had to Deal with one that used the I for Ground that I Remember. Great info and Clear Explaning, Seems I had run across one in the Past where Mounting Plate was Isolated, and had a small push on Terminal for the Ground, Have you seen those? Or am I thinking something Else? Thanks

Had NO IDEA the ones that looked the same were different, this is WHY after I fried one of my mowers wiring I WON'T work on my other one, & I'm screwed because I'm 30 miles away from a shop in rural Florida and even the shops I contact WON'T even hand sketch me a basic starter / charge circuit diagram SMH

I’ve got a 12v version of the last solenoid… three terminals…the two main posts are each connected to two positive (one wire to one positive post. And the other to the other battery) battery posts (bass boat, with dual batteries)… the small terminal in front is connected to a single red wire, that I have not traced…. Can anyone tell me what I’m looking at? It’s old (1995 vintage) help! Thanks for any ideas…Kevin

hello there, I am in the right place. I have an old tractor that uses a 24 volt starter, the altenator/generatior is 12 volt. A series-parallel switch(solenoid) temporarily gives 24 volts for starter. That switch is burnt out. Can I use a 24063 spst to replace that switch?

what about a 3 stud negative to excite vs positive to excite solenoid? wondering about this for my 80's boss plow. I had to order 6 different solenoids (two of which said they were negative to excite, but weren't) until I found one that did. How do you test for negative to excite? I had a mechanic fix it for me.

First time here, and solenoids are above my pay grade. I thought they were things that rode on starter motors like a little space shuttle on top of a 747. Turns out that on my Econoline E150 van the solenoid is tucked in to the very front corner of the van, even farther out than the battery. Like they were trying to hide it or something. Nowhere near the starter motor, anyway. And now this video's got solenoids looking like other solenoids. Like they're trying to fool even the mechanics. Sheesh. I hope my mechanic knows what he's doing.

He means I believe leave the starting ignition in the run position and with a screw driver touch both pools at the same time (with the metal shank of the screw driver) or any thing that's conductive made of metal like a piece of solid house wiring that's has most of the insulation on it that can be safely held on to while bypassing the internals of the relay to Ingage the starter for starting and once started remove screw driver to stop the Ingaging and spining of the starter only need to do this if turning the key does not turn starter spinning. If starter turns over but no start it could be a bad ignition switch or fuel pump including no fuel or very low fuel in tank ect. When bypassing the starter solenoid and it starts it`s most likely a bad starter solenoid; replace with OEM or a good after market thats like the original. Ps don't run starter for more than say 10 seconds at a time you could damage the starter or at least run the battery down.
