This car can even start during an EMP or apocalypse. They made these old cars and trucks solid, man! Childhood and nostalgia, as I remember seeing a few of these as a kid in the late 90s. Lol! Takes me back!

Hahaha you're only nostalgic about your own life. If you say E28 528i or 535i, yes!!! ❤️ But 524td, why? Crappiest engine ever, only known as "the bavarian smoke machine". BMW made a few mistakes too and 524 is one of them. R.I.P. 524td!

@Zombie Head Diesel engines in general are more robust, primarily due to the need to reinforce them due to very high cylinder pressures caused by the compression ignition/extremely high compression ratios. I would bet that most diesel engines would outlast their gasoline counterparts due to this simple fact.

I'm not so sure. Cars as recently as the late '90s would rust. Most cars of the '70s & '80s would rust like mad. Most cars would be dead after 8-10 years or so having rotted to bits. I own an '87 Granada Scorpio 2.9 V9. Yes, the engine is rather bullet proof as it's all iron but I swear I can hear it rusting on quiet evenings. I also own a 2003 E60 530i. It's done 189k miles (304k kms) and has no rust on it as all. the engine, box & diff all run extremely quietly and it's very reliable.

These engines were not very reliable for a diesel. My dad wanted one in 1983, but was advised to have a look at Mercedes-Benz, because the dealership was honest enough to tell about the (initial) issues. Head gaskets were a bit weak at the time. But the car went very well. Fast and with a lovely sound.

@@vangestelwijnen Partly true: The Head gasket has Problems if you push them very hard on the motorway in germany. Driving 190km/h longer time and then stop them fast on the parking place without letting them run in 1000 u/min for at least 2 minutes. The water was boiling then in the cylinder head.... The head gasket dies then very fast. The mercedes natural spirated diesel: like the W124 300D never dies. You can push hours with 180 km/h on the motorway. These engine are by far the reliable ones. More reliable than any japanese car. The only disatvantage mercedes diesel had, whas their fuel economy. Because of the pre-chamber injection system they neede more fiuel. But damm realiable injection pumpe that can run even on peanut oil or sunflower oil. Damm the time i drove with old sun flower oil from burger king. Only the mercedes ate the oil. The rabbit , the japanese toyota the injection pump always broke.... The good inline injection pump that was quality
