Seems that you missed most of what's important in the first five minutes. Unskippable intros, not having access to options and menus and having control taken away all have the potential to _totally destroy_ a new player's first impression. It doesn't matter if your intro is the most amazing thing ever, if it's shown in a wonky resolution and I can't fix it, you're going to piss me off straight away.

Final Fantasy 8 is the king of spectacle introduction of all games. it had the most advanced graphics at the time, the music was orchestra-level good, the characters were very unique, the fight scene was unbelievable, and the narrative was just poetic and mysterious. i know that many people hate on this game but at the time, everyone's jaw was dropping at the gorgeous intro of FF8

South Park: The Stick of Truth did this perfectly. First, because the humorous setting of a 90's movie intro made us laugh and say "Oh, man, this is gonna be amazing" Second, with the OMG-this-is-what-I-wanted customization. And third, because you could fart. Seriously, those three alone sold the game.

One example of a good "intro" is actually minecraft's demo - I know, sounds strange - but here me out. It starts you out in a mystical world of blocks... you've heard of this game, but don't know exactly what to do. You find out you can kill stuff, and there's torches... as the sun goes down, you realize this is a world you want to play. There are certainly problems with not introducing the crafting mechanics due to forcing you to wiki them, but I think this demo serves as a really good "intro", at least it did to me years ago :3

Not sure this goes for all types of games. Some people have already mentioned Heavy Rain, but most grand strategies and sim games don't, and arguably can't sell themselves in 5 minutes. The first 5 minutes of SimCity are spent figuring out the UI and watching the paint dry on your first residential zone. Europa Universalis gives you a map, some provinces in your colour, and a speedup button if you don't want the first 5 minutes to consist of watching your first army march from one side of your kingdom to the other. Dwarf Fortress... ehh... Generating the world is more than 5 minutes, but if we call that loading the game, then the first 5 minutes have you poring over a list of items and skills for your dwarves until you are thrown onto the most confusing, information dense screen in gaming history. Sure there is the wow factor of the complexity of these games, which is the main attraction for its target audience, but the first 5 minutes won't give you much of an impression about the game's mechanics or narrative and the wow factor exists only in the vague promise of grandure that might lie ahead...

+sarah hawthorne I agree, it immediately tells you "This is a game where you fight absurdly large foes who are undoubtedly stronger than you." And that sense of power after you drive back the dahren mohran stays with you the entire game. Not only that, but it makes you want to go back and fight him, for REALS this time, and no letting him get away! Then you learn there are elder dragons much more threatening than the dahren mohran, and you really get hyped to take those guys on too!

It's funny because a game that had me hooked in the intro, before I could really control my character even, was one that you made a specific video to say was an intro done wrong: Skyrim. Being a long time Elder Scrolls fan, and remembering a general lack of dragon in the setting outside of Akatosh, the attack on Helgen had me hooked immediately. I needed to find out why there were suddenly dragons and how they got there.

I freakin hate in medias res. Whenever a story starts out at the end and cuts back to "3 hours earlier" and just proceeds linearly from there, I can tell that the writers were just being lazy and couldn't write a better intro.

I find that in medias res + flashbacks feels just as cliche as the amnesia beginning. However, when done correctly (and less lazily) it can be a great hook. I find Xenoblade to be a great example: you start in the middle of a war, with a fully developed and high-level character. After you fight off the enemy and feel like a badass, you're brought to the house of the real main character, who you then follow for the rest of the game.

A few months ago, I got Monster Hunter Generations, then I bought Monster Hunter 4 because it was on a steep sale. I played about 30 minutes of both, and this video explains pretty well why I stuck with 4 despite Generations being the more recent game. The first task in Generations has you harvest some stuff out in the play field. The first task in 4 throws you into a shipboard fight where you have to fend off a giant monster (Dah'ren Mohran) by firing cannonballs at it from either side of your ship. It's pretty obvious which intro was more engaging and exciting.

The first few minutes of Dark Souls were some of the most aggravatingly uncomfortable and unenjoyable experiences of my gaming life. I can't blame Dark Souls for that, it's a spectacular game with a spectacular intro. The only problem was all the amazing things about Dark Souls world had been explained to me in great detail by my friends beforehand, and I had spent (not exaggerating) 3 hours prior to this, wrestling with my computer to get Games for Windows Live to work. The mystery of the world was spoiled for me, ridding me of the curiosity, and I was already in such a god awful mood that having anything demand intellectual analysis or immersion on my part just made me even more upset. Funny to think about how bad the "hook" of a game can be if they don't have the elements of the player's mindset that they depend on. Fuck is Dark Souls ever a great game though. So much fun.

That's actually a rather interesting idea. I've also heard ideas of MMOs or RPGs that allow you to be as powerful as possible right at the beginning and as you progress you gradually get weaker. Over the course of the game you would have to choose which abilities you need the least and get rid of them. It would all build up to a point where you are the weakest thing at the end fighting a seemingly all-powerful enemy. The difficulty curve would be fairly consistent in this game as well.

Then again I live my life by this rule. Anything can be good as long as it's done well. When we watch King Kong or Bridge to Terabithia we already know that one of our beloved characters is going to die and yet we do it anyway. Because the journey there and the sudden loss emotionally engages us. This must be delicately handled though. Do you remember Mass Effect 3? How everybody loved it and now all they can remember is an ending they hate. Think hard about how you want to end your story.

You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that thief over there. *Lokir:* Damn you Stormcloaks. Skyrim was fine until you came along. Empire was nice and lazy. If they hadn't been looking for you, I could've stolen that horse and been half way to Hammerfell. You there. You and me -- we shouldn’t be here. It's these Stormcloaks the Empire wants. *Ralof:* We're all brothers and sisters in binds now, thief. *Imperial Soldier:* Shut up back there! _[Lokir looks at the gagged man.]_ *Lokir:* And what's wrong with him? *Ralof:* Watch your tongue! You're speaking to Ulfric Stormcloak, the true High King. *Lokir:* Ulfric? The Jarl of Windhelm? You're the leader of the rebellion. But if they captured you... Oh gods, where are they taking us? *Ralof:* I don't know where we're going, but Sovngarde awaits. *Lokir:* No, this can't be happening. This isn't happening. *Ralof:* Hey, what village are you from, horse thief? *Lokir:* Why do you care? *Ralof:* A Nord's last thoughts should be of home. *Lokir:* Rorikstead. I'm...I'm from Rorikstead. _[They approach the village of Helgen. A soldier calls out to the lead wagon.]_ *Imperial Soldier:* General Tullius, sir! The headsman is waiting! *General Tullius:* Good. Let's get this over with. *Lokir:* Shor, Mara, Dibella, Kynareth, Akatosh. Divines, please help me. *Ralof:* Look at him, General Tullius the Military Governor. And it looks like the Thalmor are with him. Damn elves. I bet they had something to do with this. This is Helgen. I used to be sweet on a girl from here. Wonder if Vilod is still making that mead with juniper berries mixed in. Funny...when I was a boy, Imperial walls and towers used to make me feel so safe. _[A man and son watch the prisoners pull into town.]_ *Haming:* Who are they, daddy? Where are they going? *Torolf:* You need to go inside, little cub. *Haming:* Why? I want to watch the soldiers. *Torolf:* Inside the house. Now. _[The wagon stops near the chopping block.]_ *Imperial Soldier:* Whoa. *Lokir:* Why are they stopping? *Ralof:* Why do you think? End of the line. Let's go. Shouldn't keep the gods waiting for us. *Lokir:* No! Wait! We're not rebels! *Ralof:* Face your death with some courage, thief. _[Under the Imperials' watchful eye, the prisoners start jumping out.]_ *Lokir:* You've got to tell them! We weren't with you! This is a mistake! *Imperial Captain:* Step toward the block when we call your name. One at a time! *Ralof:* Empire loves their damn lists. *Hadvar:* Ulfric Stormcloak. Jarl of Windhelm. *Ralof:* It has been an honor, Jarl Ulfric! *Hadvar:* Ralof of Riverwood. Lokir of Rorikstead. *Lokir:* No, I'm not a rebel! You can't do this! _[He makes a break for it.]_ *Imperial Captain:* Halt! *Lokir:* You're not going to kill me! *Imperial Captain:* Archers! _[Lokir is downed with one bowshot.]_ *Imperial Captain:* Anyone else feel like running? *Hadvar:* Wait, you there. I think one of the best examples of spectacle intros in games is Bayonetta 2's intro. Yeah, the actual intro is a monologue playing over gameplay you can't lose but then... That amazing introduction in New York City... (Don't read if you haven't played it). After a pretty funny and cute cutscene we're treated to fighter jets flying between buildings in New York. Then Bayonetta jumps onto one of the planes and starts fighting angels on top of the freakin' plane! After a few plane hops you fight a miniboss that chases you on a train while that same boss destroys the rails behind you. You then stop yo finish the monster off with. One of your monsters from hell. But that monster turns on you and starts attacking a tall building (I think it may have been the empire state) and you have to fight a giant dragon while flying theough the sky! It was incredible and I loved every second of it.

Bayonetta... It starts off with a cryptic text about the setting, shows two characters standing on the face of a clock tower falling off of a cliff, and immediately throws you into the game as one of those characters. Not knowing anything about the controls, you try to get a grip on how to play as enemies attack you. You can't actually die during this part, so there's no real risk... but the game doesn't tell you that. You're just there, fighting on a falling clock tower against shiny, strange-looking enemies as things explode and a narrator tells you about an ancient war and its sole survivor - the last witch. Narrative... check. Mechanics... there's a proper tutorial later that explains the game's conventions and shows how far things can go, but since you jump right into the game... check. Spectacle... oh yes. Spectacle is no less than a defining trait for not only Bayonetta, but most Platinum games. Bayonetta's intro was frickin' amazing. I could see it being argued that it's the best part of the entire game.

I think that would be very interesting if you were given the illusion that through your actions as your past self, you can prevent your death, but eventually find that no matter what you do the circumstances and time of your death is inevitable.

Thanks for saying this. I was once criticized ignorantly about how I could know nothing about a game in 5 mins, but if it sucks, it obviously wasn't tested. Also can be too insultingly easy to make me want to quit.

in my platformer the first moments of the game involve the main character waking up in a dumpster, finding a bag of $1000, and being chased by a cat mafia

@Extra Credits 1. Could a cool looking/interesting animated opening cutscenes before the game starts intrigue most players? They do for me at least. 2. Also could a cut scene when game starts detailing certain things intrigue most players? Because like the other question, these also do for me.

+Rashaad Couloote To me, it sounds like 1 fits into "spectacle" and 2 fits into "narrative".

I'm aware of that its just that I plan on making a game and I would like to use something like an anime cutscene opening, but want to know if it would interest people.

As long as it's captivating and skippable, I think it's a totally viable option.

A prime example of a terrible first five minutes to an otherwise amazing game is Half-Life 1. Not even including the several minutes of exposition (about Black Mesa's JOB OPPORTUNITIES), the first five to ten minutes of the game mainly consist of walking around and talking to people. It is so boring, I have a save file on my PS2 starting on the third chapter so that I can just skip all the boring walking around. In total, it's about ten to fifteen minutes before you face the first enemy.

That second thing was a part of why I wanted the Fierce Deity spin off of Majora's Mask to be a legitimate thing! Supposedly, it was a game where you took control of Fierce Deity, or Oni-Link, and took part in the battle between Fierce Deity and Majora. By the claims, the player first takes control of Fierce Deity in the middle, or at the end of a battle. The opening sequence doubled very thoroughly as a tutorial level. Who else would support it? Perhaps as a WiiU release, or something? (I'm saying this, and I don't even _have_ a WiiU...)

One good way to do a spectacle intro that will last is to offer up something that's just inherently special. That first time you climb a sizable hill in Minecraft (well, when the world gen isn't going psycho or just being lazy, which happens from time to time). Planescape Torment is, in some ways, largely based around spectacle, at least for those of us who didn't play the Planescape campaign setting in the tabletop DnD. (Seriously, Sigil is spectacularly fucked up). Flight Sims seem to rely on this at first. My personal favorite, TIE Fighter, gives you an introductory mission that's almost entirely a non-combat mission. Sure some enemies show up if you stick around for the bonus missions, but the main objective is to fly near 5 large blocky freighters that are flying very slowly in a straight line, then back home. Why is it interesting? Because I'm flying! In space! In a *TIE Fighter*! Admittedly that one's aged a bit, but that's a pretty spectacular thing to be doing in a 1992 game.

One thing about Spectacle that I think is worth mentioning isn't necessarily a reliance on the graphics, but in the sound as well. Final Fantasy 6 and 10 are two very good examples of this. In 6, you have your traditional world building text crawl, lead into a conversation between Biggs And Wedge as they discuss Terra and their mission and then... that opening credit sequence. I still go back to my SNES occasionally, fire up FF6 and start a new game just for that. The dual layers of the lonely march up to Narshe and the almost mournful tone of Terra's theme sends shivers down my spine every time. Take a look at FFX too. Yes, the intro does a great job of setting up a feeling of the uncanny with Tidus' version of Zanarkand and all that. But for me, the game hooked me even before that. Yeah, the graphical complexity of that short little opening wasn't... mind blowing - especially in comparison to the rest of the game - but rather the combination of the battle-weary group resting, and the most haunting piano melody I've ever heard really drove home the point that... they were doing this for the greater good, not because they wanted to. Before you know literally anything about Spira, that one sequence, that one song, sets the mood for the tragic tone of the Summoner's Pilgrimage long before the details were shown. For me, that created a unique juxtaposition, especially after acquiring Valefor. I remember Yuna showing off the Aeon, everyone going nuts like they were watching a sporting event and thinking "Wait, if this is really how summoners are treated - like celebrities - and this is a happy thing... why were they so mournful in the opening?" And really, they wouldn't have really looked so mournful if it weren't for the song playing. The graphics for facial expressions were ambiguous enough to allow for any mood. Maybe they were just taking a breather after slaying a dragon, or eating dinner. But no... "To Zanarkand" made sure you knew they were putting off a big sacrifice for as long as they could.

One game I'd say introduced the characters, setting and story quite well in the intro was Bravely Default. The intro basically introduces you to Agnes, telling you something's going wrong, the world needs help, and something unknown seemingly kills her. The next few clips are a small introduction of each character, telling you what they're about, notably showing Agnes... Not in any huge danger and setting up that the Agnes earlier is, perhaps, in medias res, all this culminating in the big event that kicks off the plot, Tiz's village being destroyed.

Here is a plot for a new rpg. And i want some feedback. A young historian, upset with Rome having fallen, manages to travel back in time via a hidden portal, which opened up when Mt Vesuvius erupted. He goes back in time, with text-books and guide on how to "steam punk" the Roman Empire and prevent its collapse. Working his way to become Co-consul and manages to become dictator. For the first 4 or 5 sequences, you play as said historian. And you then transfer over to the hero, who, having been this mans greatest fan becomes his enemy and travels through the same portal to prevent him. He discovers a different Rome when he arrived. Suddenly Romans have Morse code, gunpowder and muskets. Even hot air balloons. Imagine a Rome with many 18th century techs worked into their then architectural design. Then, you play in an AC style through quests to eventually assassinate him. But, in the process you loose a love interest. But after going back the way you came, you find the world entirely different. All of Europe is under an emperor of Rome. And are stuck in and around the 20th century tech. Your character then manages to "reset" the portal's needed opening. Making use of an artifact found in an archaeological dig at Pompey. Then, you go back through and kill the historian right as he is about to apply and pay for his roman citizenship that he did with money he forged in today's time. And promptly die in the event.

I'm just wondering here now... what do you guys think of the game Unreal when it comes to narrative and presentation? I've always found the game dreadfully overlooked by the community while I think it is, even today, extremely immersive - with lighting, music, sounds, level design, pieces of text popping up here and there... I'd say that for me it's one of the best paced shooters I've ever played, with locations like the Sunspire and Bluff Eversmoking remaining firmly lodged in my memory some 17 years later.

I CANNOT STAND IT when a game starts me off strong and then strips it away. I love the "growing stronger" part as long it's not just grinding. I like to feel like I'm getting more and more powerful, not have it given to me, and to take it away in the beginning is even worse. Maybe something could happen to the character that forces them to change behavior for awhile, but the story IMHO should always be chronological.
