+Gerard Williams for me money was a definitive motivator. After I started working in the field I truly loved the industry - but it became very bitter sweet. Working for commission while trying to keep my moral compass pointed north became a challenge. I might be charismatic but I'm not a good salesman, due to morality. I'm honest with customers and I will make suggestions but I won't press too hard on them. I love the science and do what I can to educate those I can but it's hard for me to exaggerate a simple suggested upgrade into a much needed system improvement when it clearly isn't the case for their usage and needs. Long story short, that's why I won't work residential any more.
@gmd1417

I'd say stick to that moral compass. It might sound corny, but honesty, hard work and good old fashioned human kindness always wins in the end. I had the same experience, (worse actually, working for a completely unethical employer). I sucked it up and worked the job for a year , as I was flat broke at the time and really needed the money. I did what I had to, hating it all the while and eventually found my way to a better job. With your experience, attitude and skills you will do fine!

Wouldn't jump to conclusions on this guys skills, but I will make a few comments. One is I've been doing this service/install for over 6 years. I've done residential/commercial/multi-residential and worked with multiple BMS systems and controls. I just want to state even to this day I don't grasp everything there's different brands, systems, and software. How this kid who's been working for what 90 days is speaking like he's conquered the HVAC industry and is giving advice in the facet he is, is kind of mind-blowing to me.

If you've never turned a wrench before and you're afraid of failure. If you can't take constructive criticism don't even try it. I worked for one of the biggest company's in my area. I used to keep printed out company coupons to help sell work to increase my revenue to in turn increase my bonus. But theirs rules to this. You don't hit the old people on social security. If you pull up to a 900k house with a bmw in the driveway , game on . Read up on psychology and get on top of your social game . Trust me on this. Once you feel like you're good. Don't be afraid to go elsewhere to make more money . Their never going to pay you what you want , but just enough to keep you around.

+Brad Aaron I totally get where you are coming from yet at the same time I have to point out that even if I were to pull up to a big house with an expensive car it would still be morally wrong for me to try and up-sell them. I've pulled up to plenty of homes like that, with the residents bragging about their bank accounts. I've made recommendations but never tried to make it seem as if it were dire for them to have those recommendations. Many times I've been to homes where the residents have their HVAC systems in great condition, working perfectly, all the bells and whistles already installed. In those situations I would take a glance at their plumbing and state any observations and recommend their plumbing to be looked at by a professional (if I believed it was needed). I would then flip that job over to our plumbers.

UnFiltered seems like you're that green . Their probably sending you're probably a maintenance tech working exclusively on warranty equipment. Meaning equipment your company installed. Correct me if I'm wrong. But further down the line when you're not working on new equipment. You offer say a blower wheel cleaning and a cap or whatever. I'm not sure if you have coupons at your disposal. If you do and the client is on the fence about having the work done , the coupon is your best friend and theirs. It's a win win. Think about learning this trade like sports , if you practice with guys better than you. The level of your game goes up , it seems like common sense. Find the best tech in the company and ask your service manager if you can ride with him. Learn from the best and that's what you'll become. Take my word for it , the road to success is paved in failure. You'll fail , you'll have other guys saying, hey you fucked up on this job and we had a call back and I had to fix what you messed up. It's hard to hear that , but you have to hear it. You have to learn from mistakes. It's hard , it was hard for me in the beginning. No one will admit that , they'll tell you how great they are and whatever other nonsense that feeds their ego. Every residential company wears the annoying boodies . I know I'm jumping around here , but starting in install would fast track you to doing service work. But get experience dealing with clients is important as well. Seeing how everything goes together is important. And watching someone else fix something only takes you so far. You could sit in the passanger seat your entire life watching someone drive , but that doesn't mean you can drive. It has to be you driving. Your hands fixing it .
@MaceValor
7 жыл бұрын
+Brad Aaron during the time I put these videos up yes I was green but I wasn't just working on warranty equipment. I've worked on older equipment the majority of the time, I actually preferred it that way. I have cleaned blower, changed out motors, fixed leaks in line set, the list goes on. The examples I gave were about when I felt that the customers needs did not warrant a sales pitch on my end. I would make recommendations but would be upfront about how those recommendations would truly effect their equipment and comfort levels. Also I rode with another person for so long because he had a DUI and couldn't be on the company insurance (long story short). When I first started I mainly did service work, the warrant and service plan stuff didn't come until towards winter. For a solid month half of my calls were following after the installers and ensuring that their work was solid and up to code so it would pass the HERS testing.

+Skyhawk7040 honestly is all depends on where you get hired. Honestly, the whole 41K is an exaggeration. That's pretty much how they get people in the door, promising a crap ton of cash. +Skyhawk7040 damn dude sounds like a pretty sweet gig if you ask me. So allow me to give you a break down on what you can expect: If you go residential HVAC then once you land a job you will most likely be doing ride alongs for a while until they feel you are ready to be on your own. I started at $15 an hour and that all depends on your state and the company you work for. Given said that by the time you finish the program and get a job it will be around the slow season so the hourly pay won't be too bad. By the time you get out there on your own things should start getting busy and the closer it gets to summer the more and more it will pick up and the more money you will make. For me it has been very hard because once I got out on my own things slowed down. So timing wise you should be fine, just make sure to save for the off season. If you go commercial and get set up with a company with a good amount of contracts you will have steady work year round but chances are will not get commission but will get bonuses and the oh so beloved over time.
@Skyhawk7040
7 жыл бұрын
So... it all boils down to the company I land and if its commercial vs residential. From how you explained it... I think I would definitely take the Commercial path. I have no HVAC experience (as probably most who take the RRCC course) but I do have field service experience working the oil field and at my current job working on water systems at chemical plants and oil refineries. I have roughly 3 years experience doing electrical, mechanical work/troubleshooting. Using tools and a tape measure isnt new to me. My issue is the money. 15 an hour is a struggle if youre providing for a family. I need overtime and bonuses! im sure at 15 bucks an hour @ 40 hrs a week with little commission or bonus is a struggle for you in Cali? I'm in Houston and making 20 an hour right now and struggling to feed my family if im not making 50 hrs a week. From what you have seen and experienced... does the HVAC field pay off with time and experience? I appreciate the videos and advice... Cant thank you enough man.

+Straightoutofchiraq he had a DUI and couldn't be on the companies insurance so I had to drive him around. I bitched about it but by the time I was able to drive on my own the season turned to winter and work was almost non existent. Not to mention he is a long time friend of the GM. ALSO - while driving him I got paid hourly which wasn't too bad but the shitty part was that on every sale I made he got the commission for it. So eventually it made it so I had zero inventive to make a sale.

UnFiltered So I just signed up to an apprenticeship hvac program with a huge company. I start in October (3 month program) so I'll be finishing right in time for the winter season. Lol. Obviously we start at $12 when we're in the classroom. Can you give me a ballpark of what you make once you're on your own? obviously it's not plumber money. I had to choose between plumbing and hvac, hopefully I made the right choice.

well it really all depends on you honestly - you can be the best technician in the world and barely make a dime - if you have decent sales skills to go along with your technical abilities then you will make quite a bit - typically it all runs commission unless you are working with commercial applications.

Passenger is embarrassing supposed to be a role model jeez I wouldn't let that guy work on a mailbox. I started this trade at 20 and always took it serious. Pookie is his pride not tape. How embarrassing ive been successfully running my own business since I was 38 I just turned 40 (been licensed for 10 years) and when never dream of hiring people with such lack of skill. Only my opinion but I love this industry.

I am sorry to be gruff but being professional is also public appearance . He may be good for his age.I just didn't think the cocky behavior suits a good tech.

I've been in the profession for 45 plus years and I am truly concerned about the new generation. If you have time to screw around with a camera and making a video when you should be taking care of the customer, paying attention to what the hell you are doing. And yea, tell the super tech to tuck his shirt in, fix his collar, shave, loose the ear ring and pay attention to what is going on in front of him. If either of you worked for my company I assure you it would end the second I reviewed this BS!!! A damn embarrassment to what use to be a Noble and respected trade.

+Tom Landis I understand your prospective and trust me if everything you said were the case then we wouldn't be working very long. Do you honestly think that we approach customers like that? Hell fucking no. The video was filmed in a candid manner to express honesty. Too often tech just try and kiss as to customers, hiding their true colors. Not us.

I work in IT and telecommunications with a side HVAC career, look I know it's difficult because I had a HUGE problem with odd colored hair and ear gauged earrings at the workplace literally 3 years ago, but I had to accept that, these day's, that is a normal thing. I myself have long hair I keep tied back neatly, i wear jeans and either polo shirts with my logo on it or t-shirts. Customers these days are paying for your time and knowledge to service whatever it is that's broken, right the first time, not a personal fashion show.. I don't usually video record day to day jobs because I either am not allowed to by NDA agreements, I simply forget or I am too busy to worry about it, but others do where allowed to, and we do it to show the customer what we did and also to have a reference or vlog of the jobs especially installs of equipment.. Especially if we come across something broken or leaking in an area we are working in before we touched anything so we do not get blamed for whatever.. People recording their work and making vlogs is becoming a popular and rather staple thing now.. But you are right these two need to learn how to pay attention, especially while driving.. I also have a feeling these two are more of the "You need to buy a new one" types rather than "I'll do my best to get you up and running today" type..
