Got to be that raccoon you had last year that was caught and released somewhere else. They always find their way back. I heard the best deterrent is to catch a raccoon, dismember it and put the parts on spikes around the area. Raccoons are pretty smart and they get the message.

Anytime I have ever had a nuisance raccoon problem it was rarely just a single raccoon problem, normally it is a gaze of them. I also am surprised that raccoon in the trap was a calm and quiet as it was all the ones I have ever caught in a trap were aggressive, loud, and generally rather pissed off and mean of course I can’t fault them for being pissed off being in the trap but Mr Ruger always quilted right down after he has a talk with them

Those cows all looking in the same direction at the sound of the bang was funny, I imagine they aren't amused at all the strange activity. Looks like the barn addition will go pretty quickly, I'm looking forward to see how your plans work out over the next few months. It's really sad to hear about the chickens, I lost one to a racoon once, it's not pretty how they leave them. Racoons can be pretty cute critters but then they remind you that they're wild animals by doing stuff like that. Even though you didn't even mention this aspect of it, having watched you for as long as I have has caused me to consider this from the mindset of the farmer, the cost of the chicks, the feed they had eaten so far and the lost profit from not being able to sell them. Hopefully this isn't too big a hit in that regard.

When I was growing up, we had to put numerous raccoons, opossums, foxes, neighbor's dogs and a few bobcats out of our misery for the same reason. You're correct that farmers have to prepare for the most common issues because the less common issues don't happen often enough to be continually preparing for them. But, you do need to have your plan of action in place to stop the damage from getting worse when those less frequent scenarios occur. Losing the whole batch of broilers is bad enough but what most people don't think of is the loss of time and feed adds to what that raccoon has cost you.

Trapped a few of these fellows in a HaH trap, they really can bend a trap and tear up the area around the trap trying to escape. They can also carry parasites that are transmissible to humans in their crap left in the trap. Always exercise caution when releasing raccoons from the trap. Most of them scurry away when released, had one turn back but a quick shot of wasp spray change it's direction. Good luck, hope you don't have too many in residence.

We've lost hundreds over the years, it is a terrible feeling. Worst was 22 on mother's day morning... My wife was crushed... Best thing we have figured out is to lag bolt foot traps to each corner of the cage/run. Use the birds as bait and they can't ever get them cause they get caught. Works for foxes too.

A few years ago, we had about 5 or 6 young rabbits that were in a cage that had been up off the ground enough where the raccoons could reach through and get their legs pulled out. It ended up being a mom and litter that I had to deal with and I did take care of the issue then. Just a couple days ago I saw a large raccoon walking through the field near the chicken run, I'll be dealing with that too. Good to see the barn going up, love watching the build process. Thanks and I hope you get all the predators taken care of and I hope your week goes well!
