As someone who has been collecting things for a long time, I have these rules for myself. 1) Never treat your collection as an investment. Explanation: Doing both will never work equally well. Either be a collector or an investor. 2) Never try to swindle anyone regardless if you are buying or selling. Explanation: I don't think this needs explaining. 3) Don't spend more than you should, never buy anything "collectable" on credit card and don't get too attached to your collection. Explanation: Always have your priorites set and spend accordingly. Your family and friends should come first. Things will never fill that void.

I have bought some collectable games on credit card before, but only when they're things that are extremely rare that I've really wanted at a low price they likely won't ever reach again. For instance, if I found a $80 mint cib copy of Valkyrie Profile or Suikoden II for the PS1, I'd grab it immediately, no questions asked. Wouldn't even care if I had to be a little more frugal on groceries that month to make it happen. I am attached to my collection, but it wouldn't ever interfere with family and friends.

The question doesn’t make sense. You don’t “start” collecting. You acquire games throughout the years that you enjoy, then bam - you have a collection. Keep doing that, and your collection gets bigger. Asking “what should I collect” sounds like a temporary urge to have a collection. If you wanted to collect games, you would already have games.. you know.. from the hobby of gaming.. I can go spend $1000 on eBay buying dozens of PS3 games but would that hold any sentimental value to you?
@beezle1976
5 жыл бұрын
Doesnt work that way for everyone. Some people have had only a few dozen games that theyve swapped, sold, exchanged, etc. for years.... always gaming but never collecting. Perhaps these people are now in a position to start collecting a bigger library. Others simply decided it looks like a fun hobby so got onboard, but arent sure where to start. There's a million and one scenarios for a million and one people. Not one of them collects in a more correct / better way than any of the others.

@GeddyRC
5 жыл бұрын
beezle1976 true, and a follow up to that for a perfect answer to the original question of “how to start collecting” - if you find yourself in that position, buy back the games you enjoyed but sold due to needing the money. That’s exactly what I did. Once I did that, I started buying titles I’d been curious about - if I liked them, I kept them - if I played them for an hour or so and it wasn’t my thing, I ebay’d it right back. 5 or so years later and I have an awesome collection that’s leagues from the biggest, but it’s a perfectly curated collection that reflects me, from my childhood to present time. Just to clarify, I don’t consider there a “good or bad” way to be a collector, but I think a collection of things that hold no personal value is not a great collection. Collecting for the love of _what you’re collecting_ so that it reflects the person is what makes it truly great.

For Retro computers for early generations, il will certainly recommand the Amiga 500. 1) It's so easy to use, switch on, put the disk and that's all (easy as a console). 2) It's a 16 bits system, the graphics are still good, and less dated compare to 8 bit computers. Not to mention music capabilities which are still great. 3) Try Speedblall 2, Battle Squadron, Turrican 2, Lionheart, Another World, Flashback, Dune the adventure game... Plenty of games are still fun to play. And specially if you are North American, you will discover an exotic and mostly european universe with a lot of gems you don't know (try Moonstone !!!!).

YES! My game collection has never been that huge but that's okay. It's CURATIVE, full of games that I KNOW I'll play. I've scored quite a few Genesis and 32X games as of late but it still comes back to that Holy Grail of the Genesis library: Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I bought both cartridges loose on eBay, and I NEVER separate them.

Some people just don't get it. :-) That's fine though, each to their own, but no matter how hard you try some people just won't ever understand. I buy a lot of t.v. shows on dvd/bluray as well, even when I've already had them on a harddrive months before theyre released here on DVD/Bluray. And it's the same with music. Some people just like to show a little appreciation for what they consume, so are happy to pay. Weirdly, if it wasnt for people like us, those who dont understand why you'd pay for what you can get freely wouldnt have half the content, nor of the same quality as what they have. @@silvervalleystudios2486 Hey, I'm using a Wii instead of a gamecube and I tell you it's worth it. I bought a Wii2HDMI adapter on amazon for 15CAD (dirt cheap!), and you can enable progressive mode with it and it looks damn good. Also, it reads gamecube disks and has the ports for gamecube controllers and memory cards, so it still feels like playing a gamecube. The sad part is missing out on the awesome gamecube bootup animation and sound. The crazy thing, you can probably find a wii cheaper than a Gamecube in the market, because nobody cares about the Wii lol.

My recommendation to anyone getting started with collecting, start with what you know. I had an Atari 2600 when I was growing up, so a LOT of nostalgia was there. My old system was sold on a yardsale when I was in the Marines in the mid-90s. So, naturally that is where I started with the retro collecting. I would always recommend starting with "commons", and go with a varied set of titles. Something that captures the full scope of the console. Then branch out from there. After you get to a point of satisfaction with that system, move onto something you never owned. I did that, and have produced a reasonable collection of consoles and titles that I enjoy playing. Last bit of advice for the new collectors. Do NOT fall into the trap of "competing" with other collectors. It's one thing to show off your collection, but do NOT ever think you have to go out and collect everything. That is a rabbit hole you do not want to fall into.

I prefer a good RGB consumer set over PVM or BVM for arcade games, you get much closer to the real deal. But a BVM is good for game cube / wii / ps2, Then again a large VGA monitor is just as good as a BVM for that and much cheaper.

Smart collectors collect things they love, not based on the AMOUNT they can collect. The last thing I want to do is look like a fucking hoarder. Original NES is going down in price, so now might be a great time to grab the classics. Also Game Boy has remained affordable, and some very expensive NES games are cheap on Game Boy and are basically the same experience. Both of these systems are a great way to build a classic collection, fast. I would pick up the nicer complete-in-box DS games while you still can. It's only a matter of time before all you can find is cart-only, IMO, and a lot of the library is still affordable. But Vita is definitely the way to go right now. Lots of great games for under $10, top-end games range from $20-40, really interesting late-release and limited release games. They look great on an HDTV, too. When the Vita enters the public consciousness again, people are going to be floored by all the games they didn't realize were on it. Games on this system in general got a low print run, so the writing's on the wall that this could explode.

Good video MJ. The passion / interest argument is the most important. I collect for Sega, never had the systems as a kid & my first system was the Dreamcast, but that led to getting a Saturn and a Genesis / Sega CD console and a Master System, which I have all wired up & connected. That led to collecting Sega games on other systems after they became software only. Except for the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. Those average between $5 - $10. However, I do agree with what you said about getting a backwards compatible Xbox. That's a good idea. I did something similar. I bought a PS3, the version that's compatible with PS1 & PS2 games. And there are so many cheap PS3 games right now. Those games aren't fun to play as an adult, but it looks damn nice next to my other Sega consoles. Then there's the whole fan translation market, like my copy of Tales of Phantasia for the SNES.
